Downloading shareware DVD
hello, I often hear of shareware where you can download DVD similar to Napster. I'll be honest, I would like to check it out. Does anyone know anything about the WebSite or what the WebSite url is? Do you have to have a DVD burner or will a CD rewrite work?
Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you hetro |

Egads. Even at fast DSL/Cable speeds it gonna take a motherload of time to download a flick over the net.

I think I've seen word of DVDs being burned to VCD, in which case I believe a regular CDR would work. Piss-poor quality, tho', and I'm not sure where any sites are. I'm sure they only appear for a few days at a time (if that) and aren't advertised widely.
But regarding downloading a DVD... Let's imagine it's 9GB of data. At T1 speed (1.5 megabit), I believe that works out to roughly 583 DAYS worth of download time. And really, how many of us see those sorts of speeds consistently? So it looks like you can say with a certain amount of confidence that DVD-Video pirate sites do not exist. But if they did, you'd need a DVD writer, which I think cost upwards of $5000-$10,000. Oh, and it's not "shareware". It's "piracy". There's a difference, tho' one frequently inspires the other. Actually, I don't think it's that many days. 1.5 megabits per second(Mb/s) / 8 = 0.1875 megabytes per second(MB/s).
9 * 1024 = 9216 MB 9216MB / .1875MB/s = 49152 seconds. 49152s / 60s = 819.2 minutes 819.2 minutes / 60 minutes = 13.65 hours So roughly 13 1/2 hours for a whole movie at T1 speeds. Let's be more reasonable and say that said pirates are only moving at half T1 speeds (conceivable with some DSL/cable connections these days). That's 27 hours then. A whole days worth of downloading for one DVD perfect copy. Not that unforseeable. Though I seriously doubt it's happening much if at all. ------------------ Floyd is pink. Lando is a sex machine. |

I am sure they are refering to "clips" rather than entire movies. But on the same token if they are speaking of downloading an entire movie, it would surely be chopped up into many files that are joined on the user's end. But also think that using your computer (resources) during download will risk you loosing connection and have to start over again. And you would need a HUGE hard drive to store all this stuff! Like they are saying, a single movie is several GIGs in size.

Czar: ...no, no, no! We're actually talking complete movies here, not 'clips'!...
Taxi: ...truth to tell, I'm chomping at the bit to give away the secret of where to copy, e.g., "Chicken Run"... but, hey! Let me just refer to this 7/24 message on the DVD Resource site: http://www.dvdresource.com/ ! ![This message has been edited by Hendrik (edited 07-27-2000).] |
