Movie Poster Of The Year 2003
Okay, Freunde, though it was a pretty disappointing year in film, the poster artwork in 2003 was as exciting as every year. If I could have come up with 20 recommendations, I would've posted a poll, but alas, I came up with 30. And I just can't bear to take out any one of them, much less ten...
I only chose artwork for movies that premiered this year in their land of production (so no Irréversible etc). Please post what you think is the poster of the year 2003 and don't forget to mention the reason. Danke. In alphabetical order: "All the Real Girls" "American Splendor" "Anger Management" "Bad Santa" "Bruce Almighty" (European version) "Bubba Ho-tep" (Alternate version) "Charlie's Angels 2" (Teaser) "The Cooler" "Elephant" (Type B) "Finding Nemo" (Bruce version) "Gerry" (Type A and B) "He ni zai yi qi / Together" "Identity" "Kill Bill Vol. 1" (Japanese version) "Lilya 4-ever" "Lost in Translation" (Type A and B) "The Matrix Reloaded" (Neo teaser) "Movern Callar" "Party Monsters" "The Rage in Placid Lake" "School of Rock" (Type A and B) "Seabiscuit" (3 variations) "The Shape of Things" "Spun" "Wonderland" 1/6

Yeah most of those aren't realy my cup of tea, except the Seabiscuit, Identity & Bruce Allmighty posters. Get Wonderland off there, it's a rip off of the Rolling Stone's Stickey Fingers album cover!
Anyways, Best poster of the year: ![]() Runner up: ![]() Third Place ![]() |

The Lost In Translation poster with Scarlett Johansson is my favorite of the year. I tried to get a double sided one on eBay, but I'm too late - they go for waaaay too much
![]() I'm surprised to see Anger Management and Bad Santa on there... ![]() |

a lot of these are pretty bad or just not worthy of inclusion. of the ones shown, i will choose IDENTITY as my top pick, a very nice companion to the film, well executed. honorable mention to Party Monster and Lost In Translation (Scarlet).
Ken Park was my favorite poster but i assume it didnt fit into the guidelines of the poll.

Of those listed (which seems like a pretty good year-end roundup), I'd probably choose:
Elephant (Type B) Mainly because it's both fantastic looking/ artful and represents the film itself very well. In choosing a seemingly completley random still from the movie, it emphasizes the theme that there are no direct meanings or reasons. And the big-ol' elephant drives the point home too. Runners-Up would be: Lilya 4-ever - I must finally see this movie, but the Region 1 DVD is far off I'm sure. The poster is beautiful and haunting. Gerry (Type A and B) - both just look very nice Lost in Translation (Type A and B) - both really highligh the isolated feelings of the characters... until they meet each other. Great. Spun - pretty and gritty and well represents the most shamefully overstyled movie of the year Some I liked that weren't listed: City of God ![]() Dirty Pretty Things ![]() The Company http://www.thezreview.co.uk/posters/c/companythe.htm Swimming Pool http://www.foreign-movies.posters-on...ges/?75007.jpg The Good Thief http://www.movies-television.posters...ges/?67396.jpg Capturing the Friedmans http://www.impawards.com/2003/poster..._friedmans.jpg Last edited by Marq : 01-10-2004 at 05:06 PM. |

My pick:
Ripley's Game I love the warmth and detail in this painting of a poster, just the right amount of content with the dapper ripley holding the umbrella. It has that added level of cleverness with the corpse cleverly hidden off to the side of the poster Runners up: Whale Rider Like the Ripley's Game poster I like how the tattooed face is almost hidden in the background, creating different levels of interest in the picture. Tastefully placed golden awards up top and a cool whale! Better Luck Tomorrow I enjoy the colors used in this poster and the simplified pictures of the characters paint them like the stereotypes under their names and the aforementioned:

Grimace2k2, unfortunately Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind never made it out in 2003. It was pushed over into mid 2004. I'm dying to see it, but alas it's not a 2003 release.
On a related note, I like the "Dogville" and "The Brown Bunny" posters floating around for these yet-to-be released in North America films. |

I like Party Monster's poster very much as well. Unfortunately, Party Monster's DVD cover is not the same. I dislike it a lot, seeing that Marilyn Manson's name is shown in large writing, yet Chloë Sevigny's is missing. Dylan McDermott's part is somewhat nominal, too.

Out of those-
Identity-Mysterious, simple & creepy. Too bad they didn't use it for the cover of the DVD Lost in Translation (B)-It's one of the best posters I had ever seen. It's a simple poster that captures isolation in unknown places so perfectly. Seabiscuit (B)-Very nice. It's odd that I hadn't seen this poster before and I really mean it. Others I would vote for that aren't in Riedenschneider's list: http://www.movieposter.com/cgi-bin/s...G&pid=MPW-7178 http://www.movieposter.com/cgi-bin/s...G&pid=MPW-5007 http://www.movieposter.com/cgi-bin/s...G&pid=MPW-7486

"All the real girls" and "lost in translation" (both versions) are among my favourites.
I think these deserve to be mentioned as well: In America http://www.movieposter.com/cgi-bin/s...G&pid=MPW-7967 Big Fish http://www.movieposter.com/cgi-bin/s...G&pid=MPW-7681 Sorry Riedenschneider, but I have to disqualify 'Lilya 4ever' (Sweden 2002) and 'Morvern Callar' (UK 2002) *Hey, I do not make the rules ok?!* ![]() Last edited by run1 : 01-12-2004 at 08:34 PM. |

Shit, how could I forget, my favorite poster of 2003...
Cabin Fever! It's a damned pity that the movie left so much to be desired, because the one-sheet is a fucking work of art. If the movie had been just a little bit better, that sweet baby would be adorning my wall this very minute. |
