The whole second half of Event Horizen. That movie had so much promise and they screwed it up so bad I am still pissed.

Contact has a bad ending!!!!! I don't think so. It has the best ending. It perfectly ends up the movie, really making you think.

I'm glad they never told the contents of the case in Ronin. It was really unecessary. They had already established that it was something worth killing over. The perfect Macguffin

Also the ending in True Romance was fought for by Tony Scott. Quentin wanted to kill Clarence and did so in the first draft of the script. I like the Happy ending. it makes it more of the violent fairy tale they were shooting (no pun intended) for.

Worst Endings:

The Haunting
* if you saw it you know what I am. Liv's talent was absolutely wasted in the ending

Contact
* just annoying

Lost Highway
* Okie, maybe the whole movie was bad.

Titanic
* Boo and HSSS me all you want gang , but I thought that the old lady-boo/hooey-"whoops! there goes my necklace" scene was just so hammy. After hearing it evewrynight for about 6.5 months it was anoying.;p

Best Endings:

Jacob's Ladder
Chinatown
The Thing
Raiders of the Lost Ark

Worst Ending:
Monster a-Go-Go (there was...no monster...)

As for the debate about Contact, I can see why some people might not like the ending, but it's very true to the rest of the movie. Personally, I don't see how it could have ended differently myself.

Coppola used to be one for great endings - Gp2, the conversation, Apocalypse Now.
And then there's Leone, especially Once Upon a Time in the West. The ending of Barry Lyndon is great, as is the whole movie. And Dead Man. And the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Just a few off the top of my head.

Poor endings? Hmm. Strange Days - that one left a distinct taste of betrayal, not that the film was that great in the first place. Oh, and the stop-motion at the end of the Evil Dead, urgh! And Kenny shouldn't have spoken at the end of the South Park movie...

ps. Lost Highway is one of the best few movies of the last decade. And the ending - in which the deeply troubled Fred Madison finally starts to comprehend his flaws and obsessions and is thus able to move on down the highway in the nick of time - is sublime

Best
Arlington Rd (slightly implausible, but surprising)
Halloween 5 (Not the best movie ever, but an intriguing ending)
Scream (Completely caught off guard)

Worst
Nothing is worse than an ending that seems promising, but then is destroyed by running too long and going in the wrong direction. Thus, my 2 picks are (WARNING: Tidbits of endings mentioned):

Contact (Should have ended right after Foster rode away in limo)
The Game (Party scene just did not seem authentic)

The reason I thought CONTACT had the worst ending was moreso dissapointment because of the lack of an ALIEN.
I mean there was alot of setup and the whole movie was based on MAKING contact, only to finally be told we weren't ready yet.

Best:
The Usual Suspects
The Mask
Negotiator
Titanic (sorry, i hafta disagree here)
Dark City

Worst:
can't think of any right now, but i know there are some that really irk me.

Not worst (in other words i MUST disagree):
Titanic (best feeling i've EVER had leaving a theater, twice)
Contact (basically perfect, they cant all be feel-good)
Pleasantville (though a little confusing)

hmm thats about all i can think of..

The Rock has to agree with Def on The Sixth Sense's ending. Wholly crap indeed. The Rock doesn't know about Def, but The Great One's jaw literally dropped.

Anyway, as for movies on DVD...

...like Falco said, The Usual Suspects was awesome. Totally didn't see that one coming (so, surprise endings are oftentimes good) and Wild Things was pretty cool.

The worst? Well, The Rock hated the He Got Game ending...too hokey.

Can't think of anymore right now. The Chosen One will be back later, though, if he thinks of more.

Best:

Usual Suspects. Have to agree on that one. The only film that's ever made me immediately go back and get in line.
Titanic. Mock me if you want, but I still get chills at the end.
Casablanca. How can you possibly leave this one out? Probably the best ending to any film ever.
Rocky. Love the ending. The best of the series (not that that's saying much). The winner of the fight is secondary to the real story. Too bad the rest of the films in the series lost sight of that.
Empire Strikes Back. Best cliffhanger ever.
Roman Holiday. If you haven't seen this movie, you really should. Of all the romantic comedies, this one breaks my heart the most. Gregory Peck's performance at the end, his final moments in the hall, choke me up every time. More people should see this movie.
The Conversation. Doesn't really end. That's what I love about it. No resolution. Just acceptance.
Braveheart. Hard to put into words, but the ending gets me every time. I hope we see this on DVD soon.

Worst:
Die Hard With a Vengeance. Goes on for about five minutes too long. Should have ended with Sam and Bruce escaping from the boat with their lives. They should have learned from the French Connection school of buddy movies that it's more interesting when the bad guy gets away.
Saving Private Ryan. It's one of my favorite films, but the old guy at the end never should have spoken. He opens his mouth and you feel like you're being preached to. It would have been much more effective if he'd just laid down a flower, let loose a tear or two, and walked away with his family. I don't need his guilt trip.

Worst Ending:

Message in a Bottle - I can't comment why because it would ruin it for those who haven't seen it, but the movie wasn't that great before & then after the ending well.....

Hmmm... I'll jump over worst endings - so many here already... best endings...

Brazil, certainly (erm, no, not the Love Conquers All cut)
The Usual Suspects (just that ending made me watch the movie twice more from beginning to end (just watching the end again wouldn't work, now, would it? )
Twelve Monkeys (just wraps it all up, very cleverly paced, and emotional content just right)
etc. - lots of them, but these three jump right into my head.

Oh, and the ending of Antz was quite cute, points in the "minor great endings" category.

I'm feeling good today so I'll only do the best:
Sixth Sense
Arlington Rd. (Very implausible, but the movie would have completely sucked if ended any other way)
Limbo (See this movie, the best of the year so far IMHO, coming to DVD in November, I can't rave enough about it, a perfect ending)

And for a little old school:
Dr. Strangelove
Ikiru (heartbreaking, and unfortunately true-to-life)
Psycho
Rosemary's Baby
Aguirre, The Wrath of God (What an image as the raft floats down the Amazon)
The Omen
Evil Dead
Night of the Living Dead (The original, of course)
Taxi Driver

Worst Contact -- the whole premise is wrong. Scientists would just drop ten more through and see what happens, and I could never believe the "conspiracy" could fool the entire world.
Message in a Bottle -- the movie wasn't going there, and the ending is a cheat.

Not Titanic: Rose must drop that necklace back into the ocean; otherwise, it cheapens the epiphany of Bill Paxton's character. She must drop it for his sake just like she couldn't cash it in for her own sake when she discovered it as she came into New York harbor.
Everybody back on board the Titanic may have been too much.

What a great topic !!! congratulations to its creator !!
Best Ending :
The usual suspects, by far the best ending i've ever seen.
Se7en had a GREAT ending too.
"A simple plan" has another good ending.
There are really lots of movies with great endings.
And i think Contact is not that ba at all, i liked it.
Worst :
Titanic without a doubt...well the whole movie was the worst for me.

I'll echo The Usual Suspects, no question. Sentimental favorite: Four Weddings and a Funeral - not the VERY ending, but the Charles & Duckface wedding scene immediately before. It's a hoot, but tense because it comes off as being very real.

Call me crazy.

Thanks Mariano I' m glad you enjoyed this topic.I hope to think up more.
Now about the TITANIC ending.I think the dropping of the necklace is an incredible waste and the epiphany of Bill Paxton's character could have still been intact had ROSE died and been shown WEARING the neckalce.
ANd another thing,I think it was very possible for Leonardo to get on that huge door with Rose.He only tried one time.He could have even climbed on top of her and balanced somehow.

Not to turn this into a Titanic thread (if it's not too late already), why would Rose want to wear that necklace that she hated so much to begin with? She only wore it for the drawing to taunt and humiliate Cal. It's not like she held a fondness for it. It was a symbol of her repression, as well as the opulence of the times, which sank which the ship.

And does anyone realize that if she'd just gotten in the boat with her mother that Jack could have had the piece of wood all to himself and they would have lived happily ever after?

Just thought I'd point that out. Still love the movie, though.

True the necklace represented all those things. It also had great economic value, hence Paxton's search for it, not the Titanic. Had she died with the necklace, Paxton would have had to throw it overboard, and the movie would have gone on longer.

The Heart of the Ocean had to return to the Ocean, and its opulence belonged on the sea bottom with the ship it represents.

Contact's ending fits with the book, The movie did an excellent job of fitting with the book. They did a fine adaptation of the book into a movie and Carl Sagan worked on the screenplay as well. The ending fit in perfectly.

Contact was just plain boring all the way through, so I was just glad when it finally DID end! From South Park: "I waited the whole movie to see the alien and it turned out to be her GD father!"

I also didn't like the ending of Contact.
And I loathed the end of Species... the stop-motion sequences just looked so bad.
And while I don't hate the ending of Titanic, it wasn't also too great. But it offers room for a sequel: Titanic II: The Phantom Necklace"
Ok, that was lame...

Best Ending/'s

BraveHeart- That has to be #1. Enough said.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade-
Shakespeare In Love
Beauty and the Beast(Disney)-even with all the talk about pricing, etc. you have to admit that this movie is the best one. Too bad on it being pulled for release this summer.
Armageddon
The Sixth Sense
Mr. Hollands Opus

Worst Endings...

Schindlers List (I got dragged to see this one)
Amistad
Quest for Camelot (animated)

About Titanic......her soul going back to the ship was the ending, not her throwing the necklace into the ocean. I feel Bill Paxton got robbed by her doing that and should've at least seen it.

Whooah... hold on a second. Amistad? Worst Ending? I admit it got a little preachy at times, but I thought it ended quite well. Sir Hopkins' last speech was wonderful, and the final shot with the text I found powerful as well. What was so bad about it?

Amistad wasn't very great IMO. It was just too "This is drama!" for me. And the scene where he just manages to spill out "Give us free." Oh man, was that corny as all hell. I was very surprised Spielberg let that one get through...

Agreeing with more of the ones mentioned here...Braveheart and Seven were both damned good. Now, a few not mentioned here yet...Fargo, Transformers: The Movie, A Clockwork Orange, and Rear Window.

Also, um, DrMc...Schindler's List? It was, like, based on a true story. Unless Spielberg totally wanted to betray history, he couldn't do it any other way. His hands were kinda tied on that one, dude, give 'im a break. (As a side note, The Rock thought it was a pretty good ending.)

My guess is that the part of the ending to Schindler that some find objectionable is the color portion with the survivors placing rocks on the grave.

It did bring the story up to date, but it also breaks the drama.

If the ending in reference is Schindler's crying, I think it fit fine.

Two new candidates for best ending -- Chariots of Fire and The English Patient -- two more movies where anything that brings them to a close is good.

While I think the plane bit was unnecessary, I didn't think it undermined the power of the real ending of the movie. What a great movie, though - Bruce Willis' best performance by a long shot. I need to get this one on DVD...
