Phase IV...FINALLY!!!

Most of you probably don't know what this movie is, which is okay. It's mentioned in Stephen King's "Danse Macabre."

The most interesting things about it are A) it's directed by Saul Bass, and if you don't know who that is, you're a disgrace of a film fan and B) it's a killer bug movie where the bugs don't get big...they get smart.

I've seen it only once on cable and it was a really good movie. I'm pissed it's not widescreen, but at least it's coming out.

I saw this flick years ago. That is cool that it is getting a DVD release... I'll pick it up. Who is releasing it and do you know any specs?

From the dvdfile main page:

Last but not least, Fox will release another wave of $9.95 super-cheapy B-titles on April 20th. The classics include Circuit 2, Detonator, A Good Night to Die, Wasted, Windfall, Killer Buzz, Phase IV and Stranded. Each is in full screen only and include no extras. Try to quell your excitement..

Since it's got a very low MSRP, I'll probably pick this up blind. I've seen the trailer and it looks very interesting. Don't care for any of the other titles mentioned.

But what's up with the full screen? Is that the correct OAR for all of these movies?

Phase IV was shot in 35mm.

If the MSRP is under $10, then places will most certainly be selling it for around $6. Chances are that this is the only release it will get, so for $6 it is better than nothing.

Are you certain it's not this film: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0289758/ being released on DVD instead of the rampaging ant movie from '74?

Probably not, as Danse Macabre was written in 78 or 79 and the link you posted is from a film made in 2001.

I think you misread my post. I'm not arguing the 2001 film is the rampaging ant film, nor am I saying it's the one mentioned in King's book. In both cases, it's clearly not.

What I AM saying is, which film entitled Phase IV is coming out on DVD? It seems to me more likely it's the 2001 film, not the 1974 one.

The 2001 version is already available on DVD... at least according to Amazon.

Well, full-frame or not, I've worn out my VHS copy - and I can't get enough of gloom-and-doom 70's scifi.

This will only appeal to fans of the scifi movies of the 70's (Logan's Run, Soylent Green, Silent Running, and especially Andromeda Strain.)

not to derail this topic, but there was another movie I've been hunting for that's in the same vein as Phase IV, except that it is a mock-umentary. The premise is that the narrator of the film is convinced insects are taking over the world, and then proceeds to prove his theory. It won some awards, and it was definitely late 70's, early 80's. Anyone have any ideas?

That sounds like The Hellstrom Chronicle (1971). I remember it...well, bits and pieces.

Doesn't look like it's out on DVD, but you can buy the soundtrack at Amazon.
