Top 100 DVD Census 2004 - Vote Now For Your Top 10

LBPound23, the bloke who runs UltimateDisney.com, has run this DVD census for the past few years on DVD File, HTF, and DVDTalk (perhaps among other sites).

I've taken up the reigns this year and will be tallying the results, building the result site (much in the spirit of previous lists), etc. Deadline for entries is 7 February 2004. The results will be posted on 15 February.

Here's the thread link to last year's Census:

NEW Top 100 DVD Census - Vote Now for your Top 10!

=======================================================

Now that all the big releases of Fourth Quarter are out and you've gotten a chance to check out the latest DVDs, it's time again to put together a list of the Top 100 DVD Releases of All-Time. This 'census' was last done in December of 2002, and the list of results was varying and certainly (in my opinion) interesting. Since this is done entirely by public vote, I have no more say in what wins than any of you! (So don't complain to me about Fight Club being #1 - I didn't pick it!

Some basic guidelines:

You select the 10 DVD releases that you consider to be best overall, ranked in descending order of quality. "Best" is determined by two criteria: movie quality and DVD quality. It is meant to incorporate the DVD presentation of the film, but it's not entirely about the extras and DVD layout. Take both factors into consideration when making your selections. DVD quality includes audio/video quality plus the quality of extra features.

You are voting on DVD releases, which means that The Godfather Collection is ONE vote, Toy Story & Toy Story 2: The Ultimate Toy Box is ONE vote, The Back to the Future Trilogy is ONE vote, etc.

Please only vote once. I'll be posting this on several Internet DVD forums as I did last year, since the idea is to make this a definitive list that the people decide. If you visit those other boards, please DO NOT vote on more than one forum.

And please be specific as to what release you are selecting. "Widescreen" version isn't necessary, but if you're voting for something like Lord of the Rings, please specify 2-Disc Theatrical or Extended Edition. I'm not really sure how to treat similar releases, such as separate DD and DTS versions (which just about never happens anymore) or something like the 4-Disc vs. 5-Disc LOTR releases and Spider-man 2-Disc vs. Collector's Set (in which the difference is mostly just physical extras). Most likely I'll just count them together, and list the more basic one with more votes with a note. In some instances, though, there might be need for separate counts (I'm thinking of something like E.T. 2-Disc vs. 3-Disc). Nonetheless, vote for what you want, I'll count them as they're voted, and I'll decide what makes the most sense once everything is tallied.

There's been discussion about whether TV Season releases should be counted as a group or separately - so I'm doing both. The overall Top 100 list will list the Top 100 *releases* (i.e. single items you could buy at a store) but I'll be also including a list where series sets are counted together.

Scoring is simple enough. Your 1st choice gets 10 points, 2nd choice gets 9, 3rd gets 8, and so on...onto your 10th pick, which gets 1 point. I will count your list from top (#1 - the best) to bottom (#10 - the 10th best) and ties or listing more than 10 releases will simply bump those releases off of your list - only the first ten items will be counted.

The resulting list will be the Top 100 DVDs based on points earned, and I may include a list of some DVDs that just missed the cut.

Oh and finally, if you'd like, you can include comments about why you picked what you did, which I would use on the results website.

The more representative this list is of DVD enthusiasts, the better is. The more votes, the better. Thanks!

Once again, for those of you who don't like to read a lot, post a list of your Top 10 DVD releases of all-time!

1) Taxi Driver
2) Rushmore (Criterion)
3) 12 Monkeys
4) Two-Lane Blacktop
5) The Shining (Restored and Remastered)
6) The Royal Tenenbaums
7) Tokyo Story
8) Fishing with John
9) Grey Gardens
10) American Movie

1) Still the greatest film ever made.
2) It's Max Fischer's world - we're just living in it.
3) Features the best on-set making of and a great as always commentary by goofball Gilliam.
4) Anchor Bay's most stunning effort for one the most unknown cult films out there.
5) Warner even restored the making of! And rightly so, it's the best there is.
6) Another labor of love from and for the man, who undoubtedly will go down as one of the most original filmmakers in history.
7) Tokyo Story is the textbook transcendental masterpiece and David Desser commentary is one of the finest ever.
8) The most unexpected release and the biggest discovery of the DVD age.
9) The most unusual discovery and another bonafide Criterion disc.
10) "Somebody didn't shit in the toilet, somebody shat on the toilet. They shat on the walls, they shat on the floor... It was a really, really profound moment. I was thinking. I'm 30 years old, and in about 10 seconds I got to start cleaning up somebody's shit, man."

1. The Exorcist: 25th Anniversary Edition
2. The Conversation
3. The Indiana Jones Collection
4. Punch Drunk Love
5. Citizen Kane
6. The Godfather Collection
7. Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring EE
8. Singin' In The Rain: Deluxe Edition
9. Brazil: Criterion Collection
10. The Bridge On The River Kwai: Limited Edition

1. A simply remarkable restoration of a film that had such shoddy treatment on video over the years. Plus this disc is loaded with just the best extras and no fluff at all.
2. Again, the restoration gave the movie a fresh new look that I never imagined possible after suffering through such bad transfers.
3. A fan's dream come true and a great (and more importantly, unmolested by Lucas or Spielberg) return to glory for the beloved series.
4. A left-field surprise and a first class DVD presentation.
5. Warner has begun to stand out as a big studio that puts much time and effort into their library of treasures. This was one of the first that got their 2 disc restoration, and one of the finest films ever made.
6. Another great package of at least two of the finest films every made in America.
7. Really shows what DVD is capable of, and just loaded with everything a fan of the film could want. Stuffed to the gills, without feeling overloaded and tedious.
8. Another classic from Warner's vaults that gets a spit-shine worthy of the art that it is.
9. A great movie, and an even better behind-the-scenes controversy. Criterion gives us all the dirt, and enough evidence to allow us to see for ourselves.
10. Another all-time great film given a beautiful treatment by a studio that hasn't distinguished itself very well with film buffs. Thankfully, this restoration was done by others a few years back and was done quite well..

#1 Adventures of Indiana Jones collection- Indiana Jones finally on DVD, 'nuff said!
#2 LotR: Fellowship of the Ring- Benchmark in A/V quality and supplemental materials (I could've easily placed The Two Towers in this spot, but it all started with FotR)
#3 The Adventures of Robin Hood- A wonderful restoration
#4 The Day the Earth Stood Still- Sci Fi classic...Klaatu and Gort have never looked so good.
#5 Band of Brothers- Even though it is a TV mini series, it should get an honorary mention in the list of greatest war movies ever made.
#6 Lawrence of Arabia (2 disc set or Superbit)- The greatest movie ever made...in my opinion.
#7 Lion King- Disney's crowning achievement. A wonderful dvd presentation with an impressive Home theater audio mix.
#8 20,000 Leagues under the Sea- A great retelling of the classic Jules Verne story, and a dvd loaded with great behind the scenes materials.
#9 Finding Nemo- Pixar has delivered another hit, with some of the most incredible computer animation ever.
#10 Black Hawk Down (3 disc set)- A favorite of mine, that hits close to home. One of the best multi disc SE's out there.

Phreak's List Of The Greatest DVDs To Date: 2004 Edition

The Top Ten
  1. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Extended Edition)*
  2. Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Edition)*
  3. Fight Club: 2-Disc Digipack
  4. Indiana Jones: The Complete Trilogy
  5. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: Criterion Collection
  6. The Godfather Trilogy
  7. Akira Kurosawa Four Samurai Classics: Criterion Collection
  8. Black Hawk Down 3-Disc Deluxe Edition
  9. Se7en: Platinum Edition
  10. Boogie Nights: Platinum Edition

01. A perfect transfer & audio mix, 4 commentaries, and two whole discs of supplements for my second-favorite part of one of the greatest trilogies ever is more than enough to make it numero uno.

02. The plethora of features and extras make it one of the best DVDs out there. Not to mention the movie was fantastic. Only slightly less than TTT though, but that's my personal opinion.

03. One of my favorite movies ever, if not the favorite. The commentaries with Fincher, Pitt, & Norton and Jim Uhls and Chuck Palahniuk are probably the most entertaining I've ever listened to. All the supplements on disc 2 only add to the awesomeness that is this DVD. It was the DVD to beat until the EEs came out.

04. My personal favorite trilogy ever, the nostalgia factor alone for me is enough to put it in the top ten. The flawless audio and video and verry interesting behind-the-scenes footage pretty much seals the deal for a top 5 placing.

05. One of those movies I just hated at first, after giving it another shot, it became one of my favorites I owned. This movie provided me with more laughs than I thought humanly possible, and the CC version is the definitive version, what with a great commentary track, DD 5.1 & DTS, and a shitload of extras.

06. Come on, you knew it would end up on the list somewhere. Contains two of the greatest movies ever made and with a sexcellent restoration/transfer to boot. The third movie is enough to drag it out of the top 5, but the supplements keep it close by at number six.

07. If only they included Throne of Blood and Rashomon, this set would be an unsurpassable number 1 for me. Not that I'm complaining. Any set of Kurosawa films is an automatic top 10 entry, and considering the age, the transfers are really quite remarkable, even for Criterion.

08. I think Black Hawk Down is hands down the greatest movie about modern warfare, and one of the best war movies ever, period. The huge amount of supplemental material in this gigantic 3-disc set is truely impressive.

09. Maybe it's just the Fincher fan in me, but I still feel the need to recognize Se7en as the best modern day psychological thriller (or whatever the hell you want to call 'em) and the DVD set is just fantastic. While not quite as great as Fight Club, the supplements, audio/video quality, and commentaries still make it one of my most watched.

10. My personal favorite PTA (not the school one) movie to date, the set is really impressive. I only wish more movies were under New Line's banner, seeing as they have 4 movies in my top 10. Dirk and his 14 inches of supplements easily have more stamina than 99% of DVDs out there today.

Runners Up (Just For Fun & In No Order)
  • Memento: 2-Disc Limited Edition
  • JFK: 2-Disc Special Edition
  • Once Upon A Time In The West: Special Collector's Edition
  • Snatch: 2-Disc Special Edition
  • Finding Nemo: Collectors Edition
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail: 2-Disc Special Edition
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Collectors Edition
  • Reservoir Dogs: 10th Anniversary 2-Disc Special Edition
  • Unforgiven: 10th Anniversary 2-Disc Special Edition
  • Nine Inch Nails: And All That Could Have Been
  • The Royal Tenenbaums: Criterion Collection
  • Terminator 2: Extreme Edition
  • Beastie Boys Anthology: Criterion Collection
  • Jackie Brown

*As soon as Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (Extended Edition) is out and they make the inevitable set of them, all three will be folded into one as The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Edition Boxset

EDIT: Taking a que from Marq's post, I figured I'd explain my picks.

There's been some slight changes (2 additions and some re-ordering)/ to my list since last year's census. I also decided to limit myself to one film per director (except the box-set), even though it was hard leaving off films like Punch-Drunk Love, Magnolia, Blue Velvet, Se7en, etc.

THE LIST

01. The Remastered Kubrick Collection
02. Boogie Nights (2 disc)
03. Do the Right Thing (Criterion Collection)
04. Pulp Fiction (CE)
05. Taxi Driver (CE)
06. Hiroshima, Mon Amour
07. Fight Club
08. The Evil Dead (Book of the Dead)
09. Mulholland Dr.
10. Rushmore (Criterion)

01. Such a perfect compilation for my favourite director. Each film can look no better, nor can they be watched enough.
02. Possibly the most-watched DVD in my collection. That the DVD is as fun and fascinating (via the deleted scenes and commentaries) as the film itself makes it a perfect package.
03. An ideal example of how wonderful a company Criterion is. It presents the film beautifully and documents and analyzes it thoroughly through the commentary, essays, and documentaries.
04. The best film of the modern era on a DVD that delivers on every account.
05. I love Travis. I really do. A film that is as great as they come, on a DVD that perfectly satisfies.
06. The best DVD of 2003. A incredibly powerful, stylish, influencial and overall awe-inspiring film, presented with such care by Criterion.
07. Still the gold standard of supplemental content for DVDs. That the movie itself is immensely rewatchable makes revisiting the DVD a regular experience.
08. A constant favourite. Even without the fantastic packaging, the DVD and the film itself show what the medium is capable of for a film that was impossible to own just 5 years ago.
09. David Lynch's masterpiece looks and sounds as gorgeous as any DVD I own. Simply owning and being able to rewatch the film anytime merits the inclusion of such a masterpice.
10. I love it. The movie. The DVD. Everything about it.

As with last year, I had to make a very tough decision to not include any TV shows. I just felt that I should ensure my 10 favourite film-DVDs get recognized. Unfortunately, this meant omitting many of the BEST DVD sets I own, and they could easily be put anywhere in the Top 10, but will in this instance remain the "Official Runners-Up":
- Twin Peaks: The Complete First Season
- Mr. Show with Bob and David (any season)
- Homicide: Life on the Streets (any season)
- The Simpsons (any season)
- The Office: Series 1

FYI:
- last years list: NEW Top 100 DVD Census - Vote Now for your Top 10!
- the list from 2 years ago: Top 100 DVDs Census - Vote Now for Your Top 10

jough, thanks for doing this in LBPound's absense! I was going to post the list at HTF but figured, I'd wait to see if you came this way too.

1) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: Criterion Collection - Not as massive as the second few choices, but the most comprehensive DVD experiance for a single film ever IMO. From the documentaries, the three fabulous commentaries, involvement of actors and even reclusive author Hunter S. Thompson... simply a stunning set. A-numero-uno in my collection.

2) The Alien Quadrilogy - Although I must confess I have not been able to fully experiance all 1 Billion hours of extra content on this release yet, it is simply an exhausting amount of informative material.

3) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: Platinum Series Extended Edition - A representation of all three releases, simply no better behind the scenes experiance. I am actually much less a fan of these movies than most others, but I still recognize the brilliance behind these discs.

4)The Stanley Kubrick Collection Remastered - No better collection of movies exists, and I even like Barry Lyndon. Also, I fully respect and enjoy Kubrick's choice of Open Matte presentation. The films look wonderful, and the 2 hour documentary is almost as fun to watch as the films themselves. A crown in my collection.

5) Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Three DVD Collectors Set - Simply the best season of any show I own on DVD, all in one insanely pretty package. A representation of the great work Fox is doing in this area.

6) Rear Window - My choice to represent the whole of Universal's Hitchcock stuff, which are all great informative discs no fan should be without.

7) Rushmore: Criterion Collection - My love for this movie will never die.

8) Star Wars: Episode One: The Phantom Menace - The movie may suck, and I believe it does, but the sheer amount of fan service on this DVD makes it a top ten contender. Only #3 does better.

9) Terminator 2: Judgment Day: Extreme Edition - Simply the best Audio Visual presentation in my collection. The Fifth Element Superbit is a close second.

10) Twelve Monkeys Collector's Edition - The best making of documentary ever made is on this disc. You need to own it.

I've been trying to add the list to as many DVD-centric boards as possible - I hope people aren't angry with me that my first post here at DVD File was the census - but I have over 2,000 posts at DVD Talk, and I read DVD File just about every day.

Glad to see that DVD Filers are taking an active interest. The list is long and distinguished so far.

This is a fine board, you'll be glad you came here.

Also, a first post being a census is cool. At least it's not spam.

Can someone please explain to me why people feel free to nominate the entire Kubrick set? All those films (excluding the documentary disc) are available individually. By that vein one could also nominate the Bond monsterbox, the Hitchcock and Chaplin sets and other such collections. No? If not and if there's a good explaination why all post-Spartacus films of Kubrick can be thrown in as one, just because they're available as a collection, I'll change my vote from The Shining to Kubrick Collection...

Fine, then I want to nominate the LARPHILLIPS COLLECTION.
Nevermind, I'm being my usually ass-like self.

1. Eraserhead - Talk about attention to detail. This restored print looks like it's been cleaned at the atomic level. If all movies were as beautifully restored as 'Eraserhead', we wouldn't be clamoring so much for HD. We also get probably the rarest extra of all: A 90 minute tell all feature by the ever elusive David Lynch himself.

2. Alien Quadrilogy - Probably the best bang for your buck you can get without stealing something. 5 foot long packaging aside, you know after viewing the Alien Quadrilogy that you'll NEVER have to double dip for another Alien DVD again.

3. Rushmore Criterion Collection - What I personally consider to be the crowning achievement of the Criterion Collection. No only do we have one of Bill Murray's best performances of his entire illustrious career, but we have a DVD that you know when you fold out the 'Rushmore' map to when the final feature on the disc finishes was made by people who truly love their job.

4. Black Hawk Down 3-Disc Set - Black Hawk Down offers something most 'based on a true story' films don't: the actual 'true story' itself. If we could get as detailed an explanation of the true story as we got with the History Channel feature in this set, we'd all be better off.

5. Terminator 2: Ultimate Edition - The only thing missing from this metal sleeved set was a Terminator itself.

6. Lord of the Rings: Two Towers EE - There is nothing possible I can say about this that hasn't been said already.

7. Fight Club SE - This DVD set is so well put together I want to 'use soap' before I touch it to make sure it never gets damaged.

8. Memento SE - So well put together with the theme of the film it deserves an award in of itself.

9. Pulp Fiction SE

10. Monty Python and the Holy Grain SE

1. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers EE
Not a big big fan of the movies but i wont deny its great packaging, sound, picture and overall extras. Found the added scenes better then . . .
2. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring EE
3. The Royal Tenenbaums Awesome movie, great picture and a great soundtrack to along with it. The packaging again is top notch and very worthy of the Criterion name on its cover.
4. Moulin Rouge! - Special Edition AWESOME MOVIE. Love the musicals, the sound and picture were breathtaking. The extras were nice as well.
5.Pearl Harbor: Vista Series Director's Cut not the best movie but the overall packaging, extras, picture and sound are top notch.
6. Futurama Vol. II Great packaging of a great tv series that was killed off at its prime. The dvd's are full of audio commentaries. The picture quality is great and the sound isn't to bad for a 2.0 soundtrack (here's hoping for 5.1 on one of the next volumes)
7. 24 Season 2 Another series which always loves to twist and screw around with us every week. I will admit that it wasn't as great as season one but still enjoyable. The extras are nicely done on one disc or can be found on the other 6 discs to correspond to the episodes. One commentary on each of the 6 discs and a decent 5.1 Dolby track for a tv series.
8. Toy Story - The Ultimate Toy Box - Collector's Edition
i don't own it. But its form Pixar and had i known i would be so addicted to dvd's and known about the box set. It would be in my collection right now.
9. Leon: The Professional - Uncut International Version no real big extras except an extended more fleshed out cut of an already awesome movie. I just LOVE the movie
10. Lion King, The - Platinum Edition - Collector's DVD Gift Set great classic animate dmovie with some decent extras. The Gift Box is awesome looking with some great sketch art and booklet to accompany the movie and package.

Since I'm doing the tallying, I guess I can weigh-in here regarding multibox sets and seasons of television shows.

I'm trying to keep to the spirit of the past four years of this list, so I'm making an entry for each DVD *release* that people nominate in their Top 10.

However, when I tally the list I'll also include a separately scored list of series sets together counting as a single entry (adding up their votes). So the Lord of the Rings: EE sets will be an entry, all of the Simsons season sets, the individual Kubrick discs will add to the Kubrick collection, etc.

The Top 100 has been traditionally for individual releases (i.e. things that can be linked to in Amazon.com as an item for purchase). So boxed sets count. The Charlie Chaplin set has gotten a number of votes, although the films in the set are not available separately, are they?

The Criterion Collection "Adventures of Antoine Doinel" is an easy boxed set to list, since the films aren't available separately (except for the old OOP "Les Quatre Cent Coups").

In any case, WB's "Adventures of Robin Hood" has gotten a number of votes, but so has the "Warner Legends Collection" boxed set which includes the R.H. disc.

In the main list they'll be listed separately (if they're both in the top 100, that is - it remains to be seen, and a few discs are so close in votes that a single list can still affect the outcome - so keep voting!), but as I said, I'll also include an overall series list to see how things stack up.

What constitutes a series is at my discretion, but I try to keep to guidelines.

However, the main Top 100 list will still be purely by points for each single release, boxed set or otherwise.

P.S. Yes, by all means please include some comments. I will most definitely be including a number of them - more so than the lists from the past have. And I *may* be PMing people for their real names, although I may just keep the quotes anonymous. I'll leave that up to the individual.
