Master and Commander April 20th

Well no Official Specs have been released BUT DVD Answers got a hold of a early advertisement for the dvd. would post pic but they don't work from their site. click above to see

Out of the 3 companies that produced the movie (Miramax, Universal and Fox) FOX in the end got the dvd publishing rights. Now lets hope they will give us the DTS-ES track that we got in theaters I would think specs will be announced as soon as the awards are handed out or just before the show itself.

Makes sense. Fox distributed it theatrically in the states. Spielberg films aside, most studios that split distribution handle both theatrical and video within the same regions. Only Minority Report and A.I. seem to have booked that trend.

Fox is pretty good at keeping the extras the same for all the regions. (from what i have seen from other dvd's) So i wonder if the EX or ES tracks will be Non Official or not a Discrete ES track. I remember the end credits showing DD-EX logo but no DTS-ES logo. BUT the DTS disc that accompanied the movie did in fact have the DTS-ES logo on the disc. But overall the extras don't look too bad i guess.

Ugh. Another ugly cover. PLEASE just use the theatrical poster for your cover art. None-the-less, I'm looking forward to this one.

Looks like everything's "brightened up" since the theatrical poster:

Thanks for the poster art Marq.
They should have used the theatrical poster. I guess they figured they needed more light so consumers would see its a Russell Crowe movie.

dvdanswers.com also mentions twenty minutes of deleted scenes. I'm really hoping these are included as well.

I guess the cover art is rather close the the theatrical poster. I don't remember Russell Crowe's head on the poster. My bad.

That cover is pretty close to the poster art. The theatrical poster is a favorite of mine.

Looking forward to the dvd release. Something I found odd, I was in Wal Mart the other day and on their little "coming soon" posters, they listed M&C as coming out on 3/20. I have no idea where Wal Mart got that date.

I read that as a possible release date for the movie somewhere as well, but I don't remember where.

Hmm, it must be a screwup, as March 20th is a Saturday. Either that or the date was 3/20 but then got delayed to 4/20 when it got nominated for the "Best Picture" oscar.

I can't imagine that the 3/20 date is correct.

I like the cover art. It's close to the theatrical art, and that's always a good thing. I'm definitely picking it up.

Well, I knew the March date was wrong, what I was waxing poetic over was the fact that I had never heard a March date for M&C.

DVD Producer David Prior spoke on the HT Forum about the lack of a commentary track:

"Alas, there is no commentary, but it wasn't for lack of trying, believe me. Peter Weir did give it careful consideration and I floated a couple of options by him, but in the end he just didn't want it on the disc. However, I did shoot a lengthy on-camera piece with him in which he directly addresses the viewer and talks about all the things you'd want to hear in a commentary. It's not scene specific, of course, but it's full of witty and wise anecdotes about the process of making the film. I shaped it into a segment called "In the Wake of O'Brian," and it is, in my humble opinion, really damn good. I hope that fills the commentary gap for most of you."

dvdfile states that this 2 disc set has a msrp of $39.95 and a single disc, full screen version, with no extras for $29.95. this seems a little high compared to other comparable releases.

i'll buy it anyway though (2 disc), i've only heard great things about it.

one thing is for sure, the packaging looks awesome.

Actually, how I understood it is that ONLY the two discer for 39.99 will have DTS on it. The single disc releases have to settle for DD alone...that bites. BUT at least it is coming out in DTS

Looks awesome.

The price is a little steep, but that'll probably translate into a release price of $15 for the single disc and $20-25 for the 2 disc set.

The package indeed looks awesome.

Looks like Fox took a page out of New Line's dvd marketing designs. The price is extremely steep (especially here in Canada when the conversion happens) I missed it in theaters but i'm willing to buy it blind. I'm really hoping that Blockbuster rents out the widescreen version and doesn't go for the P&S version. They have been going back to renting some P&S dvd's in my area but only for movies geared at family and kids. So with its rating i hope they opt for the 2-disc and allow me to save a crap load of money later on when its pre-viewed

I'm surprised that fox didn't tack a number on the bottom of the spine so that it would go along with their 2-disc re-releases.

It's extremely annoying that the 2-disc set is $40. I could see the single-disc barebones P&S edition for $19.99 retail, but with that at the usual $30 and the 2-disc at $40, it seems kind of steep. Still, if I have the money I'll be picking up the widescreen 2-disc set. Wonderful movie.

On a side note, seeing as there's not a lot of action in this film and it takes more of a doccumentary approach, with multiple places where I think it *could* get boring to a mass market audience (though it never was to me), do you think Joe Six Pack would even get it? Why do they think they need the single-disc P&S barebones version on a film like this? Shrug.

And, yeah, that packaging is droolworthy.

Loving that packaging. I'll be buying the 2-disc set blind. Should be about $25-30 on release week, which isn't too bad.

don't worry, that's just the suggested retail price. dvds rarely street at the srp. like others have said, it will probably drop somwhere in the $20 - $30 range (actually, probably between $25 and $30). since the single disc is basically bare bones compared to the 2-disc, and also considering it looks like the single disc will only be fullscreen, look for a good amount of the 2-disc sets at best buy/circuit city at a decent price.

Single Disc Cover Art

Cover art from IGN DVD.com

Which they still seem to think will have some sort of extras maybe included. Plus they don't say if its just a P&S version only.

Damn Fox and there 2 month early reviews (sometimes even longer) IGN DVD.com has there 2 page review up for the movie. The Picture and especially the Sound have been given top marks. Plus a good set of interesting extras. Only really upset that there was no audio commentary on the dvd but looks like the 2 disc se is a keeper when it comes out.

It comes out on 4/20?

I heard if you start "Wish You Were Here" just after the 20th Century Fox fanfare, you see a lot of weird conincidences between album and movie.

I can't wait to hear it on a home theatre...I am pretty sure that I am going to wet myself Especially when the sound and video are getting top marks...the pricing is a mystery though. I don't even think that Gladiator's RSP was that high when it came out. Are we seeing the beginning of a trend I wonder?

Yeah, this and texas Chainsaw are both getting high priced special editions. Not a good trend if you ask me.

It is all a part of the "WalMart" ing of Amerca.

Thank God Wal Marts are not allowed in either of the places I have lived in my life. Wal Mart is too white trash I guess.
