Survivor DVDs?
I am really surprised that Paramount stopped making the single DVDs of SURVIVOR after The Australian Outback.
Watching SURVIVOR All Stars has really made me hungry to see antics from previous seasons (Boston Rob in Marqausas, for example). Anyone know the reason why there are no SURVIVOR DVDs, either singles or season box sets? |

There are two types of shows that have very little replay value for most people and therefore do not sell much. Reality shows and Game shows. Survivor falls under both categories. Last edited by C Roberts : 02-06-2004 at 04:52 PM. |

I have to agree with C on this one- I have no desire to see them again. It just doesn't appeal to me, I doubt I would ever go back and watch them. I like watching the show each week, but just have no need to ever watch them again after the fact.
Could just be me, but I suspect that C is correct and unlike episodic TV, it doesn't have much replay to it. |

For me, Survivor is like watching a sporting event. I enjoy watching the competition of what is going to win (or in Survivor's case, who is going to get kicked off the tribe). Once I know the outcome, there is no interest in watching it again, because I know how it will turn out.
Just as I will not watch a taped sporting event if I already know the outcome, I wouldn't watch Survivor again knowing who has already won.

I also rewatch taped sporting events. I tape most every game when the Canucks are on TV. Living in Southern California, I don't get to see them on TV that often. So if I'm in the mood to watch a hockey game, I'll throw on an old tape. Another example is the 1994 AFC Championship game I have taped. As a big fan of theirs, its fun to watch the Chargers in arguably their biggest win in team history (except maybe the OT playoff game against Miami in 1980, but thats off-topic ).If I had seen all the other seasons of "Survivor", I'd be right there with you in your opinion limacharliewhis. ![]() |

When I've taped sporting events that I couldn't watch live, if I hear about the outcome, I won't watch the sporting event with the same enthusiasm. I'll know what to expect, and that takes alot of joy out of watching competitive events for me. A movie is a story, not a competition. If I enjoy the story, I'll watch it again because I like it. Most mediocre or bad movies, I'll never watch again. I'm the type of viewer that would prefer to watch something new than watch reruns over again. Well-crafted, well-written, well-executed movies and TV shows, I can watch over and over again, because I'll see something new I didn't see before.

Even if I know the outcome of a particular competition, if it's interesting enough, I can watch it numerous times. Take the spring Darlington NASCAR race from 2003. I can watch that thing over and over, because it was so damn good.
Same thing with Survivor. It's not only about knowing who wins, but how they win, and what exactly transpired in that time. I geuss that you'd really have to be a big Survivor fan to want to buy any DVDs on it. I think this is definitely one of those shows that people either love, or totally hate.

But unlike sports you can't always see how they win. We only see what the producers want to show us. There are deals being made between players that we never see (like the Colby/Tina alliance) and some stuff we do see is staged by producers. |

For me, the draw to Survivor, is not about who will win it all or the challenges. Its all about watching the relationships develop and hopefully some funny dialogue. Usually, the contestants who figure out how to manipulate the inter-relationships the best, do best.
For me its not much different than watchin a movie plot develop.

UnRated Version?
The only thing that could make these discs sell is if they did an unrated version. Namely no blurring for when Heidi or Jenna take off their clothes, but that isn't for a few seasons. I doubt a naked Richard Hatch is going to sell many discs.
