BEST/WORST- CASTING

Are there particular actors/actresse that were well chosen or born to play their roles?

Or can you think of some choices that were just way off base.

Best
Jack Nicholson-Joker
John Goodman-fred flintstone
Robin Williams-popeye
Lee ermey-full metal jacket

worst
william hurt-lost in space
Leonardo Dicaprio-Titanic(Im sure many will disagree.Great choice financially, but could have gotten a better actor)
George clooney-batman

Ok take OVER!
more from me later...

I don't think anyone was made to play Batman, but that's beside the point.

Can't agree on Leo. I'm one of those upset that he wasn't nominated for Best Actor (but hey, I only work for a studio).

Best:
Robin Williams in Good Morning, Vietnam
Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List
Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca
Clark Gable in Gone With the Wind
Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs
Jennifer Tilly in Bound
Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones
Robert DeNiro as young Vito Corleone
Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched

Worst:
Sofia Coppola in Godfather III

Can't think of any more. That last one obliterates all others for me.

No-one can play Batman? I have two words:

Bruce Campbell

Enough said I think.

You know, a few weeks ago I was telling a friend Bruce Campbell could make a great Batman. Not only that, but Sam Raimi would make a great choice to direct a Batman flick (take a look at Darkman, and I defy you to tell me Batman had a more "comic book vibe"). Certainly nobody could do a worse job than Joel S***macher!

As far as worst casting goes, how about Keanu Reeves in Bram Stoker's Dracula. I laughed out loud when he said "I know where the bastard lives," in his So-Cal-British hybrid accent.

"Bram Stoker's Dracula" nothing.

How about Keanu Reeves is "Much Ado About Nothing" ... now THAT'S a bad casting decision. I kept expecting him to end a line of Shakespeare with "Dude!" *shudder*

Best:
Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia
Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove

Worst:
Rosie O'Donnell as Betty Rubble
Every 'ugly duckling becomes swan' movie where they cast a supermodel as the ugly duckling with frumpy clothes and glasses.

Re: Campbell as Batman. Funny you should mention that, my workmates and I have come to the conclusion that the new Superman movie should have been filmed from the Kevin Smith script, and starring Brucie as the big S. You couldn't do better than that!

Best: Bill Murray in Rushmore
Worst: Rosie Perez in everything she has ever done.

Best:
Joe Pesci-Goodfellas/Casino He was born to play an angry Italian.
Morgan Freeman-Se7en He seems to exude stoicism.

Worst:
Mark Hamill-SWT Everybody took joy in slamming Jake Lloyd for his acting, but I will give him slack for being a young kid. What was Mark Hamill's excuse?
Any comdey featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Tom Hanks-SPR This is not so much bad casting as it is a case where he should not have been in the movie. This was a throw away role in a cliched, plotless war movie that did not require a good actor. I think this was an obvious attempt by Spielberg to throw in an actor who has caught the Academy's eye recently in hopes of getting another Oscar for a movie that only had SFX going for it.

As a whole, has there ever been a movie that had a more stars-per-role ratio than "Glengarry Glen Ross"?

Kevin Costner in Robin Hood

Best:
Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs
Harold Russell in Best Years of our Lives
Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird

And the winner is...

Edward G. Robinson in 10 Commandments!!!

...no fair citing Keanu Reeves in anything. He's never been able to act. Ditto for Chris ODonnell.

Another choice for worst casting -- John Wayne as the Roman Centurion in The Greatest Story Ever Told.

For worst casting, Howzabout the Duke as Genghis Khan in (I Think) The Conqueror?

Or Rex Reed-Rex Reed!!!-as a pre-sex change Raquel Welch in Myra Beckinridge? "Where's my dick? WHERE'S MY DICK?!?!?!"

Tea Leoni in Deep Impact...OK, you're a reporter, and you're breaking the biggest story of your career...wouldn't it have been...oh, I don't know, BETTER to see her acting like a professional on-camera, without "uh-ing" all over the place, and then seeing her start to crack when the news camera is off of her? Go to any newswroom in the country, grab Slappy, the janitor who don't talk much because of a hairlip, put him on camera, he'll act more like a newsperson than Leoni...

But for good casting, howzabout Freeman as the Prez? Or Robert Duvall as the shuttle pilot?

Back to worst casting, check out Cliff De Young & Jessica Walter as Brad & Janet in the sequel to "Rocky Horror," "Shock Treatment." Not their fault, and it's not that Bostwick & Srandon were brilliant, but even at that point they were cultural icons, why would you have anyone else playing those roles?

Susan Sarandon demanded $1,000,000 to play Janet which was about 25% of the films budget and Barry Bostwick couldnt (But wanted to) because he was attached to another project. Cliff DeYoung was first choice to play Brad in Rocky Horror.

Worst casting: George Lazenby as James Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
This guy doesn't act like James Bond, he doesn't feel like James Bond, and he doesn't even look like James Bond.

Best Casting: Jack Nicholson in any movie he did so far.

Kevin Spacey in any movie he's done so far. And if you'd rather cast a different actor, chances are Kevin Spacey can do an impression of that guy as well!

James David Walley

BEST
Mark Wahlberg as Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights
(Remember that this role was written for Leonardo DiCaprio, who had to back out when the shooting schedule for Big Sinking Boat Movie ran longer than expected. I can't imagine Leo doing half as well with this character as the ex-Marky Mark did.)

NEAR-MISS WORST
Ronald Reagan as Rick in Casablanca
Shirley Temple as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz
(Believe it or not, each was the first choice for that part. How fitting, then, is the following award...)

WORST
Ronald Reagan AND Shirley Temple in That Hagen Girl
(Imagine Ronnie and Shirley as a romantic couple, even though he's old enough to be her father; indeed, much of the plot of the film concerns town gossip that he IS her father. This film was such an embarrassment that Reagan bought up every copy before entering politics, fearful that its appearance on the Late Late Show during a campaign might ruin his chances.)

Walley? JD Walley? DDS Member (or former DDS member?) JD Walley?

Dude, where you been? Whatever the case may be, glad to see you back!

Anyway, good post. The Rock new about all the stuff except the Ronald/Temple pairing in That Hagen Girl. That is funny that he bought all of the copies.

Not at the time and depends on what "star" means to you, but have to give a little bow to American Graffiti. Ron Howard the only "name" in the cast. Then Unknowns: Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, Cindy Williams, Suzanne Sommers, Charles Martin Smith, MacKenzie Philips, Paul LeMat . . . who am I forgetting?

Wasn't Tatum O'Neal in that?

But as to how many at the time stars... I haven't counted, and this may disqualify based on your definition of cameo, but what about It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World?

No, but I think I see how your mental filing system works. Tatum was the then youngest best supporting actress winner for Paper Moon which was released the same year as American Graffiti, 1973.

Back to the thread:

Best:: Frances McDormand & William H. Macy in Fargo.

Worst: Still thinking about Olive Oyl married to Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

Uh, have you seen the real Erin Brockovich? Didn't like the movie much, but Julia had Erin down, or perhaps Erin was a Pretty Woman fan even before taking on PG&E.

Can't believe no one mentioned this casting nightmare which almost happened:

Burt Reynolds as Han Solo & Sissy Spacek as Princess Leia.

I think one of the best casted movies has to be L.A. Confidential. Most of those guys & gals weren't the stars they are now and it's amazing that the WB, of all the studios, had the balls to do it.

For me, the best casting for a single role occured in 1969 when George C. Scott did Patton. Absolutely riveting.

Best ensemble cast: The Godfather
