Although I have the first release in my collection I don't watch it much. It (for obvious reasons) is a difficult movie for me to rewatch.

I don't watch it all that often either, as you said for obvious reasons, but this movie had such an impact on me when I first saw it in the theater that's ranked at the top of my list of movies (I know there are better movies, but on a personal level, this movie ranks at the top). The first release was the first dvd that I ever got and when it comes to new editions, this one that I'll have to buy every different version of.

While I like this movie I haven't bought it because I don't think it would have much replayability but it looks like now it's the chance.

It looks as if they are trying to make the case look like it is metal. I'd love it if the case was. But I doubt they will make it metal (inless it was a numbered limited edition) as the production costs would be pretty high.

No Directors Cut? LOL.

I am curious to what other supplimental material there will be. Spielberg did some of the inteviews for Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the set of Saving Private Ryan, so I am sure there is much much more content recorded there than we have previously seen.

I also never knew the "Boot Camp" sessions were filmed.

Looks as if this will be well worth the double dip.

I'm guessing it will be made of the same metal used in the T2 Extreme Edition and the recent Scarface release, although it might have to be a tad thicker to accomodate the fact that its a box and not just a slip like the other 2.

I wonder if the clasps on the case will actually work or if they'll just be stuck on top and have it open like a regular box.

this is amazing news, i've wanted to get the DTS version for a while, but couldn't find it (infact there is a thread around here somewhere on the DTS version's limited numbers)

great news, just great news

You know what? I never got around to that original release...don't know why, but turns out it's a good thing!

I was just going to go out and get this, since it's come up for discussion recently on the File - glad I held off a few days to hear this announcement.

I'll finally add this to my shelf - and in a nice spiffy 2-disc too!

The DTS version is pretty easy to find out where I am (San Jose, CA), but I have refrained from buying it because I considered the DD version to be good enough (and it had a featurette at least). I will probably spring for this new version though. Great film becomes great DVD.

I'll be picking it up, but I hope to Christ the box is nothing like the T2 Extreme Edition slip. That thing tore the shit out of the amaray case the movie was in and pissed me off to no end. Whats the point of the frigging slip when I can't even get the movie back into it without bending the goddamn thing.

Sorry about that.....

Anyway, the new set sounds great and I'll definitely be picking it up. Now to get rid of the old one....

I'll double-dip on this and keep the DTS version, too. Do you think we might see SE's of Jaws or JP? Their dropping down in price(Jaws $9.99) and all of Spielbergs release over the last couple of years have been 2 disc SE's.

I already have the DTS version, so I'll probably rent the bonus disc once Netflix has it. Like others, I can't watch this movie too often, so I doubt I'll upgrade.

I'd buy a 2-disc SE of Jaws in a heartbeat if it contained the full, uncut 2-hour Laurent Bouzereau documentary from the lasrdisc and the original (Oscar-winning) mono soundtrack instead of that awful, remixed 5.1 track. Until then, the laser will have to do.

As for Private Ryan, I should have known after the current version went down to $12.99. Still, a movie worth the double-dip.

Another definite double dip for me. Looks like the original will be another birthday gift. Saves buying a present + they aren't bringing much on ebay.

From the look of the pictures I'd just about be willing to bet my left nut that that is no more than a well designed cardboard sleeve, to actually make that metal would just be way to complicated and would probably drive the price up past the $19.95 their advertising.

The R1 DTS version was one of my first DVDs I ever bought and at the time I wasn't as clued up about DVD and didn't realise the DD release had a documentary that the DTS version didn't have. I will wait for more specs and might just get this two disc set.

Unlike others, this is one of my most watched discs, and I don't even have the DTS version. I can't wait for this...I'll be picking it up for sure.

Only thing I don't like about this movie is that the sniper rifle has no kick. One small insignificant detail in an otherwise great movie.

I never bought the regular 1-disc. This SE I will own, though.

Very cool case design, too. even if it isn't metal

I wonder if the DTS track will be the same one used on the single disk version.

Isn't the single disc already loaded? If so this sure seems like a some what useless re-issue. Any how I'll probably pick this one up simply becuase it'll be on 2 DVDs (less compression)

The current release has a ton of extras. It is a great release.

I see this release as a convenient way to cash in on D-Day.

Yeah... if it's the one I'm thinking of, that documentary would have sucked big time if it wasn't for that facilities coordinator they had.

Those were certainly some coordinating facilities, all right..

From all I have read and heard, it will be the exact same transfer, audio and video. I plan on keeping my DTS version, and not upgrading for the extras. If you don't have the DTS version, I highly recommend upgrading. It is stellar!

Listen to the DTS track
