Texas Chainsaw Massacre:2003 dvd SE...

So whos buying this?

I know I am,it will be too hard to resist. No it is not better than the original(what is?),but it was a surprisingly decent film with some nasty moments scattered throughout. Also I loved watching the audience react in horror to the film, everyone was freaking out & shaken when it was over. I have never seen a modern horror film do that to any audiences today(since they are too lame & clean). So that is reason enough alone for me to purchase it.

Now I was reading the review & it mentioned a gross out death scene with Tucker in the deleted scens section. Was he the guy with the glasses? The reason I am wondering,is that dudes death scene was horribly edited in the R rated version. You don't see anything of what happens & it was so choppily cut together that it appeared censored in my opinion, unless it was just a bad editing job of leaving things to the imagination?

I own the original, but I don't think I need this one. But I am curious to see how good it is (didn't catch it in the theater), so I'll rent it.

I haven't seen it and most people's opinions on it are split so I'll rent it first. But I do think there should be some form of punishment/fine for people who purchase it and don't have the original.

Well I own the original, have had it since it was first released back in the late 90's. One of the first dvds I ever owned!

Also bought part 3 recently since I like that film,am avoiding part 2 until a 16.9 version is released. Am not going to bother with the 4th film at all,as it is beyond terrible(expect for Mathey Mcaunahey, however you spell it). meanwhile the remake was decent & can be looked at as more as a sequel, than a remake, that I can pretend part 4 never happened

+ if it isn't a sign that all is not lost. My little brother, now 17 was pissed when he heard the news of a remake & vowed not to see it,said the original is one of the greatest horror films ever made(he has'nt seen it in years, but still recalls it highly!). So all is not lost with the current generation. Though he was shocked to find out that I slightly recommend it with some reservations. It is no match for the original, but on its own..was a decent film. I am sure he will check it out for himself once I get the dvd. I just hope he does not think it is better than the original.

He is also angry at the Dawn of the Dead remake with good reason. We both loved that film as kids(he saw it when he was 5!).

Only thing I'd like to know is why is the retail price for this so high!?!?!? $39.99 for 2 discs? That's outrageous. Maybe if it was a Criterion Collection but it's not. Anyone know why it's so much?

I assumed you had the original.

It was nice to see part 3 recieve such good treatment special features wise. Not to mention the uncut version, since the R rated version plays out like a made for tv movie (gore wise)

Yep, it's pretty sad that the Anchor Bay VHS has better quality and extras than the current MGM disc.
I'm hoping we get a SE this summer.

Unlike most people I kind of like the 4th. It's just so fucked up I can't not like it. However I've yet to pick up the cheapie disc. Probably because even though I kind of like it, I don't know if I can justify buying it a third time. Since I have the Japanese version titled "Return Of The TCM" and the first vhs release titled "TCM: Next Generation"

Hopefully. Plus it may cause some of those who have not seen the original to seek it out.

At first news of the remake I just laughed it off, but after hearing alot of people say the same thing as you I decided I'll give it a rent. And who knows.....since I like part 4 and the PSYCHO remake I might actually really enjoy this.

I thought there was also a cheaper single disc option.

Only if they have some sort of 'buy TCM remake and get TCM original DVD for free' offer.

The reason for the high price,is a most likely stupid metal outercasing that is removeable. Not sure what it looks like,or what the design will be,but that is why it is so high. Just the studio trying to take as much money off this release as possible from consumers.

Meanwhile the one disc release has no extras save for the trailers & music video. That is priced at $27,so since you can get the SE for $27 online. That is the better deal in my opinion, even if the pricing still sucks.

I'm about 75% toward picking it up. If it didn't have all the great extras and no dts ES sound, then I'd say 35%, but I love the original and I'm a sucker for horror flicks. So if this movie is even remotely watchable (I'm told it's not bad, and that it's super gory, which is cool in my book), I'll get it along with Panic Room SE on the same day!

I'm totally buying the 2 disk edition of it. I loved it in the theater and this dvd is too jammed packed with goodness not to pass up. All the extra's I'm excited about seeing but was really jazzed that it's gonna be in DTS:ES. Can't wait to hear this movie encompass around me...creepy. I'm takeing off of work that day and will be first in line to snatch it up.

And drudo-182, drew, your site rocks. As a huge Night fan, I check your site here and there for all the updates on his newest film. All I know is... I want a special editon, DTS version, of SIGNS. That movie rocked!!!

Both Peter Bracke and the reviewer at HTF have said that this movie eschews real scares for gore. I however, did not like the movie because of what I thought was a complete lack of gore. I had always heard that the original was so disgusting that it made people puke.

However, I thought that just about every death scene (except for the very cool first death) was blocked poorly, or not even shown at all. I just thought there was no gore and that was my biggest disspointment in the movie.

I hope I am not sounding like a disturbed person who loves violence, but I think that horror movies should show some good gore, especially a movie about a chainsaw murderer.

Watch the original and see how it can work. There's very little "gore".

And one person is massacred with a chainsaw! :flush:

I know I am in the minority here but the remake is a zillion times what the original is. The original can fuck off.

As I understand on the pricing some are complaining/confused about, isnt it 2 versions-
1 is a 27.99 New Line PLatinum Series 2 Disc Version ala Lord of Rings which on release probably will be around 20-25.

1 is the standard 1 disc version listed now at 19.99 probably going for 15-17 on release.

As for my opinion, I love both the original and this one. I think the new version is done with enough respect to the original that it doesnt embarass itself or do a diservice to the classic.

As for the gore, neither was ever to bloody although the title would suggest it, and i would say it was more in the mind of the viewers. While in the 70's it didnt take much to be on the edge as far as gore was concerned, I will say this new version is not gory as it is 'grisly'. Body parts on trays, masks of skin, dark wet dungeons, more innuendo then actual blood and it worked.

My wife left the theater visibly shaken for some reason, so to me that means the movie did a great job.

Only 2 complaints-
1.I did not like the extended chase in the locker room at end. I dont remeber the original, but it didnt seem accurate.

2. I thought in the original they had a more extended sequence with Biels character tied down at a dinner with the family and the gross innuendo that they were eating not only body parts, but those of her friends. Am I remembering right? If so that would have worked great.

Anyway, I wil be buying the PS Version.

Jessica Biels pointy nipple titties through a wet, sweaty t-shirt didnt hurt its visual style either. :p

yes, Platinum Series, NewLine Rules lately with their DVD's

Pan/Scan-

My wife probably noticed my tongue hanging out, which annoyed her even more. Let me embellish you all with a little story about that day and a little anger/humor between her and I:

1. We went on her birthday, 10/17 which was opening day.
2. We had just gotten out of traffic court for an accident she had as the rear-ender- she was of course guilty and not happy.

3. Considerate fool I am, we went to see this movie, she was as I said, visibly shaken and left theater at a quickened pace to her car and sped away w/o a word.

4. That evening I enjoyed the couch.

5. Light at end of tunnel- thinking I was a selfish, stereotypical man who had forgotten or overlooked her b-day, boy was she surprised the next when she got home at 4pm and found I had been planning a suprise party all week.

6. needless to say all was forgiven that night, however she vows not to have any part of watching the DVD when it comes out in a month.

THE END.

I liked this film a lot technically. I think if you have seen the first, you will have seen this, but the movie looks awesome. And let's not forget, the producers were cool enough to hire back the film's original DP to shoot it. Since I make films, I will be mostly curious about what went into getting it done, the type of film stocks used, proccessing, etc. I am not a big horror fan, but thought the music, look, etc. were good enough to sell me on the 2-disc if I can grab it for around 25.

As for the NIPPLES..... My girlfriend wants to see the movie again just for those....It was her favorite part

(PS. No one mentions their feelings on the "Blair Witch" bookends.... I thought it was a bit to obvious....)

That's true for the most part, but most dvds don't retail for $39.99. I think a reasonable comparison is the Red Dragon Director's Edition which had a list price of $34.99. The cheapest price it could be had for in its first week of release was $24.99, so I think you can't just about count on the 2-disc Platinum Series being somewhere around $25 at best.
