I heard about this a week or so ago and it really pissed me off because I just picked up the regular release a few days before I read that . You would think they'd try to milk the first release for more than four and a half months before pulling this out of nowhere. Oh well, at least I got it previewed for $9.99. Depending on how this new set turns out, I might have to see about selling it off.

No word on that here. Being a Columbia Tri Star release i think they will hold off on any SE release until they are about to release the sequel into theaters. (that has already been given the go ahead) Extended Resident Evil cut was rumoured in the roiginal commentary release. Nothing came out and now the sequel is about to be released. I betcha some sort of announcement will be made for the new cut release DVD soon. That is why i also worry about a long wait for the 45 minuted extended cut of Hellboy. Said it will be out in December, but more likely when a sequel is about to be released (if the original does well in theaters/dvd sales)

I don't think the extended, unrated cut would be any good... It's just an excuse to do another release with a new commentary track. I've listened to the whole first commentary track.* They've produced the (action) movie that they wanted. Unfortunately the action and built-up to the climax wasn't as thrilling as The Matrix, so it's not a good action movie relative to The Matrix. Even "The Forsaken: Desert Vampires" was a better thriller/suspense than "Underworld". Perhaps if Arnold Schwarzeneggar and Peta Wilson starred in Underworld as big bad wolf guy and big bad vamp girl, the movie would give more punch. The problem with Underworld is that it is really an uninteresting melodrama disguised as an action movie... but it scores very low on the action and thrills scale...

[*Edit: The director mentioned something about wanting to do an epic battle between vampires and werewolves a la Lord of The Rings, but he did not have the resources... Will he one day shoot the war sequences that he wanted for the first movie?]

This could give them a chance to release this with a dts-es discrete audio track with "cooked" LFE bass to blow subs to bits....

Peace...

I dunno why, but I had a feeling that 1 disc release wasn't going to be the last we saw of this movie, so having not bought the first, I'm not angry at all. I'm just wondering if I even want to buy this edition (it was a good mvoie, but I'm not sure its worth owning).

I have to beg to differ with phpotato. The movie is indeed an action piece, as intended by the director (watch the extras on the disc, and he makes that quite clear). But I still feel that they attempted to create a mythology between the Werewolves and the Vampires that is rarely dealt upon in the movies. And to say that the "Forsaken" movie was better... you have to be joking. That movie was shot horribly and had no style whatsoever. Underworld is by no means a fantastic film, and there are plenty of mistakes or things they could have done better, but it wasn't that bad.
I will be happy to pick up an extended cut even if it means double dipping.

I liked Underworld, but not that much.

Shame on you Columbia.

I didn't buy the initial release, but if I had I certainly wouldn't double-dip.

Some of you have too much $$$ to spend on DVDs.

I'll buy it. How anyone could say 'No' to more Kate Beckinsale is beyond me.
