The Passion of Christ - DVD

OK folkes, we all know this one is comming, so I thought I'd start a thread on it.

The question is: What special features would you like to see on The Passion of the Christ DVD when it is released?

Personally I can't wait for the Mel Gibson commentary. I want to hear his explanations behins some of the imagery in the film (Satan and his demon baby? WTF?!?).

I assume Gibson will do a commentary as he did one for Braveheart, and it should be damn interesting. Is anyone aware of what company has bought the rights, if it has been done? I would love to see a Criterion or 2-Disc Lion's Gate release of this...

Easily the most controversial movie of the past several years, who will be the lucky studio to pick up DVD distribution chores for Mel Gibson's surprise blockbuster The Passion of the Christ? None other that Fox Home Entertainment, who originally passed on distributing the film theatrically. While no details have yet been announced on a street date or features, expect a late summer or early fall release. Bet this one is gonna make a great stocking stuffer?
Fox usually does a pretty good job with major releases. I still haven't seen the movie, but I plan to get to it this week.

Fox can be on and off but I think they'll make a good set out of this... I hope it gets the respect it deserves (and with it's B.O. take I'm sure it will).

As for the baby and satan here's my take if you like...

Spoiler (Highlight or Triple Click to Read):
at first the "mother and baby" seem a beautiful thing, it isn't until closer inspection that you realize that what you thought you saw was not as it seemed. I think this is used to represent sin in general. from a distance or at first glance or initally it appears tempting, etc.... but later you realize that it is evil.

would the spoilers tag apply here?

And I certainly hope that Mel's commentary for Passion will be better than the boring-ass uninformative one on Braveheart....

I think a commentary from big J.C. himself would be very insightful, he could talk about the accuracy of the film and what he thought of Gibson's version of his story, maybe they could even get Satan to do the commentary with him and he could tell us what he thinks of how he was portrayed in the film. I think there's some real potential here.

I took the Devil with the baby to mean that everyone is born into sin and only through the blood Christ spilt can you be saved.

Just my opinion on the visual.

My interpretation was that Satan would never treat his "children" like that, how God was treating Jesus then. He'd never let that happen to his "son".

Either that, or it was a mockery of the Jesus/Mary relationship in the film.

That scene with Satan and the "baby" was one of the very, very few things I liked about the movie, actually.

I thought the baby scene was Satan taunting/tempting Jesus again - just like in the garden at the beginning and as he did when Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days (not in the movie). Basically, Jesus was being tortured for the sins of man. He was fulfilling His father's purpose...at the beginning when he was praying, remember he asked God (the Father) if there were any other way - "Let this chalice pass from me"...and then "But let your will be done" or something along those lines. God loved the world so much that He sent his Son to die for our sins, and Satan was taunting Jesus with that fact. He was shown lobingly cradling his "child" in essence saying, "I would never put my son through what your father is allowing you to go through..." Just my take anyways.

Onto the DVD - I am not sure what special features I would like to see. I tend to think that the release will be similar to Schindler's List or something like that. It will be tastefully done, respecting the material of the film itself.

i just don't think it's the *I wouldn't put my child, son/daughter through this*. I'm not saying my opinion is right, but I feel that it has a much deeper meaning than what some of us are eluding to.

This film will remain forever open for interpretation, but for those of you who haven't and wish to know more, read the Bible, it holds the truth.

Personally, I would love for the menu screen to be graphics intensive and fairly interactive. Here's my idea... The screen starts out with a cg cross upon which is a bound cJesus. Each hand and each foot would be assigned its own section, left hand: special features, right hand: scene selection, left foot: setup, right foot: trailers, that sort of thing. Once that particular appendage is then selected, a cg hand comes into frame and bangs in a cg nail with a cg hammer creating a gc wound that pours cg streams of cg blood before you are branched to the next cg screen. At that point we zoom closer to the head of the cg nail to see that each cg stream is assigned highlighted text that can be selected to lead you to what you want to view. Say, perhaps, storyboards, blooper reels or a Sunny D commerical...

If you want to play the feature, you would click on J.C.'s head, which, naturally, would bring down a cg crown of cg thorns, before the feature begins.

I'd buy it for the menu alone...

I can't wait to get this one on DVD. This is a must-buy!

When the DVD comes out, I can finally see this movie the way Mel Gibson intended it to be seen--without subtitles!

Whatever extras are on the disc (IMHO, it will be close to bare-bones) will be in Aramaic with most of the dialogue subtitled in English

I have to agree with you there. There isn't a whole lot of features that would seem appropriate on a DVD like this. A trailer, the making of that was broadcast on PAX, maybe a commentary...but I'm not too sure about that.

I would definately like to see a commentary with at least Gibson. A cast commentary would be cool too as would a commentary by some sort of historian and/or a theologian.

The making-of documentary on PAX was pretty good, so I'd like to see that on there as well. Also a sort of documentary on the politics of the time might be nice.

i would guess that the chances of a commentary aren't very good but i hope i'm wrong. i very much want to see this film but (like most movies these days) i'll probably wait until the dvd is released.

Its not the movie itself, but it looks the supplements are starting already. They're sure not waiting long to start cashing in on its success...

Title: Mel Gibson's Passion
Starring: Mel Gibson
Released: 8th March 2004
SRP: $19.98

Further Details
MPI Home Video have announced the release of Mel Gibson's Passion in which Diane Sawyer interviews filmmaker Mel Gibson about The Passion of the Christ. Gibson discusses his own religious beliefs with Sawyer, and explains how his faith helped him overcome struggles with addiction and other personal problems at a spiritual low point in his life. These dark experiences ultimately led him to make The Passion of the Christ. Sawyer also interviews Abraham Foxman, the national director of the Anti- Defamation League, who shares his views on the The Passion of the Christ. Religious scholars, members of the clergy and others assess the film's potential impact. The disc will be available to own from the 8th March and should retail at around $19.98. Fox have also let us know that they've picked up the rights to the home video release of the actual theatrical film. Stay tuned for more information.

I saw that show. It was quite an eye opener. He was quite open about everything except his father's comments. He wouldn't comment on that.

I hate to rain on your parade here but I seriously doubt they'll be using that for the coverart, no matter how important you may feel the film is you must still remember that certain parties are hoping to make some big money here and will be marketing it accordingly. I think from a marketing standpoint that image is much too harsh and could scare away potential buyers, I mean people are going to know what they're buying but it's still kind of a brutal image for a DVD cover, I think it would possibly scare away the customers who are less devoted to the subject matter and just looking for a "good" movie. I mean just look at it from the average joe walking through wal-mart point of view "gee honey, do you think we should buy 50 First Dates or The Passion?", "well sweety, I'm feeling pretty masochistic tonight and want to be depressed for the rest of the evening so lets get the one with the bloody Jesus on the cover", "Good choice honey buns!"
Though it's not like the coverart will change the subject matter of the film I still think the studio will go with a much more "friendly" cover, something that doesn't just scream REPENT! Personally I think that's a very well done poster and seeing as how I'm always for the studios using the original poster art I would be thrilled if they were to prove me wrong.

If they're gonna charge $20 for the legit disc, there sure as shit better be something more than the movie on it.

I just read the Schindler's List DVD review this morning. For some reason, I have the feeling that the extras package for Passion will be very similar. Not a whole lot and what's there will focus more on the historical (or religious in this case) ideas behind the film and almost nothing about the film itself.

You said it yourself. This was not meant to be a touchy-feely feel good about yourself the world's alright movie. Hopefully the DVD producers stick to the meaning of the movie (Passion = suffering, that Jesus went through to save us from sin) and keep the original poster art.

The movie hasn't sold over $125M in tickets because J6P was walking around the theater saying to himself "What should we watch tonight, honey?" People have gone specifically to see the movie and I think the same thing will happen with the DVD.

I'll but the DVD if its bare-bones, but a commentary track with Gibson and a Christian theologian would be great, and not "innapropriate" at all IMO. Let's hope for a widescreen-only release, too. Fox can do great stuff when they want to.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see the "Buddy Christ" as the coverart. I hate when images are toned down or altered. Makes it hard to even recognize the movies. Typically, the actors are all in headshots...as was the case with "Cold Creek Manor" this week.

I'm seeing POTC tonight, so I'm excited.

A commentary would be fine for me.

But I am getting less and less interested with special features anymore.

A commentary by Mel Gibson's father would certainly be an interesting extra.

Since an equal number of people are viewing this as a religious experience as those viewing it as a movie (just look at the stories about showings sold out to church groups), I expect any extras to be very, very dry. A commentary that discussed faith would put off half the audience and the other half would take any humor or jokes in the commentary as pure blasphemy.

Yep – any docs or comments will be serious and technical and not much else. Can you image an extended cut for those who just couldn’t get enough of watching Jesus get beaten in the regular movie?
