DVD Profiler ?

I was just wondering if anyone uses dvdprofiler to catalog their DVD's and if so, are you having problems with the program lately? Do you know if the site has shut down?

Also, can anyone suggest another cataloging program or site?

DVD Profiler had a major hardware problem involving their servers and their ISP. Ken Cole of Intervocative Software posted on Home Theater Forum Friday night that the problem was being worked on. They will be back as soon as the problems are resolved, so, keep checking.

I dumped DVDProfiler awhile ago and went to guzzlefish.com.

I got tired of the dvdprofiler client side program and the uploading, updating, errors, blah, blah. I only used about 10% of it's capability, the rest was overhead.

Yeah, I just input about 7 DVDs in today, and all for naught. It wouldn't even recognize that I entered them. The program has become worthless now. I just hope they are able to fix this soon. Oddly enough, it downloaded the images for some of the DVDs I added but did not display the DVD as part of my collection. It would be nice if InterVocative would post an explanation to people that are using the program.

I love the program, and I was wondering what had happened. I hope they get it back working soon. I've never had a problem with it before, so this had my worried.

I was wondering what was going on with DVD Profiler, I haven't been able to add any of my new DVDs for a couple of days now. I like Guzzlefish and I would probably switch entirely to that if it wasn't for the report option on DVD Profiler, I like being able to make reports and graphs regarding my collection, it can be very helpful.

They posted on the HTF that they had serious hardware problems and problems with their ISP, and then posted this message on their home page (which showed up on Sunday):

Quote:
Temporarily Unavailable

DVDProfiler.com is temporarily unavailable as we perform routine maintenance. Please check back in a few minutes.
Obviously, it's been well more than "a few minutes" so either their rep on the forum or their home page is lying.

Who knows when they'll be back up.

Does anyone use a program that has a desktop component? I really like DVD Aficianado, but it's only on the web (and now my Palm Pilot ). I could really use something to replace DVD Profiler.

Dang it... I hope they aren't gone or going to be gone for a while. I like this program, and have 700+ DVDs entered into my database so far. I was also looking forward to the PocketPC version they were working on. Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

One option might be to export your DVD Profiler collection (the application supports XML and CSV file formats), then import it into your new application of choice. Success would depend on how good a job the new application does on the import. It's possible you might need to modify the export file to conform to the required import file layout, but it might still be less trouble than re-entering hundreds of titles.

Is there a decent list of links for all programs and/or services for tracking your collection? I actually have my collection in DVD Aficionado, but download DVD Profiler over the weekend because I've always wanted to try it due to it's ability to export your collection and keep a copy locally. With their servers being down I haven't been able to do much of anything, though. I've taken a look at Guzzlefish, as well as DVD Tracker, but haven't been overly impressed by either.

I used to use DVD Profiler but stopped in favor of DVD Aficionado. DVD Profiler had some "technical problems" I did't like and it ran poorly on my Windows box.

If they would have written it in Java, maybe I would still be using it.

Peace...

I looked at some early versions and wasn't impressed. Then they came out with a version that required you to have Internet Explorer just to install it so I said forget it.

I don't see why I should be forced to install a redundant piece of software when I had a browser that worked perfectly well.

I still don't have IE on my system. Mozilla works fine for me.

I was hoping the DVDProfiler guys would go the route as CDDB and FreeCDDB went, with redundant / mirrored / distributed database servers scattered throughout the world and with an open query / update protocol also. No such luck.

Edited: Huh? What happened here? I edited the message to add the above paragraph and it entered as a new post!

That's why I have both now...DVD Aficionado seems more solid. But I do like the report option on Profiler.

This up on their site now:

DVDProfiler.com is temporarily unavailable. We experienced a serious hardware failure and are working to resolve the issue.

Our new servers are in place and in the process of configuration and restore. As portions are reinstated and tested, they will become available.

Restore of full functionality is expected by end of day Monday.

Thank you for your patience and concern. Please be assured we are taking the necessary steps to prevent future service interruptions.

DVD Aficionado is not good for 500+ or 1000+ collections, takes too long to load up.

Not if you organize them into subfolders. I agree though that if you keep all 500+ on one page it takes forever to load.

Monster, where did you get the information for each dvd (movie date, dvd release date, etc.) and how did you get that information onto your dvd aficionado page that way?

I really like what you've done and have been wanting to do something like that for awhile. Thanks for your help.

1. Check off the movie you want to edit in this manner
2. Go up to "My DVDs" and select "Edit My Titles"
3. Enter in the information into the "Your Comments About This Film or DVD" box and save changes.

Thanks for the info TopHat

But I was also wondering where Monster got the info for each dvd and if he had to type all that info for each or use a cut/paste feature I haven't found yet.

I recently updated to DVD Profiler 3. I have been resisting an update for a couple years now, but I was forced to by a complete wipe/reinstall of my system. I am disappointed to see that I am now limited to putting 500 titles up online. I can have as many as I want in the database on my computer, but if I try to upload that to the net it will only allow the first 500 to be posted on the web site.

I really liked the free version of 2.4 (I got spoiled for years by not having to pay for this software). Is there any way around having to actually buy 3.0 ? I am a cheap bastard and don't want to spend the $30 on the prog.

I am guessing that there were some internal shake ups within the company as there is this new version and the web site for accessing your online list has changed from dvdprofiler.com/whatever to intervoactive.com/blah blah blah.

and yes, i realize that this is an ancient thread :p

I might have a copy of the free version. I recently bought the new version myself, but I had the older version on cd somewhere, If I can find it, I'll let you know.

As far as getting more use out of the free version, I think you're pretty much stuck. I decided to pay for it, seeing as it has a great interface, and really robust options, plus, it says it was one time fee for life, so any future versions will be yours for free.

I had the premium version from before. My friend had the fre version. When he updated it trimmed his library down to only show 50 titles for some reason. He went ahead an bought the premium version and it unlocked all his titles. It is really worth the price.

Right now it seems to be very slow pulling up modal windows and such and today I am having a lot of problems syncing profiles and putting in my Planet Terror Steel Book.
