Grim Fandango

Anyone else playing this funny adventure?
I'm currently stuck somewhere in the 2nd year of my journey to the afterlife

Anyway, I just wanted to ask if there are others who like this kind of adventure games. The first one I played was Loom on my old Amiga500, but it was in fact Monkey Island (on the Amiga as well - you always had to swap the discs, I sometimes felt like a disc changer aaah, nostalgia) that got me hooked on this game genre.

Basicly I like them since one can't die... you can try again and again till you solved all of the (sometimes mind-breaking) puzzles without having to start it all over and over again (call me old-fashioned, but I just can't get used to the Lara Croft kind of games for that reason...)

I think I've played most of them... let me see which ones I can remember:

- Loom
- Maniac Mansion
- Indy and the Last Crusade (not my favorite since you actually could "die" in this one)
- Sam & Max (one of my favorites)
- Day of the Tentacle
- Monkey Island 1-3

And guess what, I once tried to play Indy and the Fate of Atlantis, but couldn't figure out how to use the damned copy protection sheet. Kinda embarrassing, huh.

So if you ever played one (ore more, or even all ) of these LucasArts Adventures, speak up here! Tell us why you like or dislike them, maybe you even have a funny story to share?

I've found a very cool GF site on the net called Calavera's Last Dance where you can download all the music of the game as mp3 files.
Check it out!

[Serge immediately spots a topic to plug SCUMM Revisited - on a DVD board no less...] SCUMM Revisited can rip (or just play) all the music directly from the game - why bother downloading tons of mp3s? (and, if you're in the US, buy the soundtrack dammit!)

Hey... that sure looks like a nifty tool. And it's even freeware...
Thanx for the info!

I love Grim Fandango!! I bought it the day it came out, and played it non-stop until I finished. I hope they make a sequel someday.
The Monkey Island games are really cool too.

a thread from last year, coming back to haunt you....
I love all LucasArts s.c.u.m. games. The Dig is one of my favorite computer games of all time, i also have day of the tenticle and am in the middle of grim fandango.

Wow. This is indeed an old thread

Grim Fandango... never got to the end since I had to reformat the HD with the game on it. Will have to start it over someday.

But there's also "Myst" to be played.
And, of course, my new HT room to be build. And DVD's to be watched. And books to be read. And then there's the GF, and the day job, and........

So

Dom, Rule #1 is: Never let the real world interfere with your gameplaying.

By following this rule, your life will be complete. (Or at least a lot of fun.)

btw, does anyone know what SCUM stands for, if anything, i have heard this type of game refered to as SCUM many times, but never knew what it meant.

is anyone else a Myst junkie? i strongly reccomend playing it Dominik. i blocked off a few hours each day for a month so i could play that hoplessly addictive game, then i got so depressed when i finished it because there was no more to explore. Riven sucked, i never finished it, but it looks like i will have to now that Myst III is coming.

All LucasArts adventure games are great (cept the Dig, really bring). SCUMM stands for Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion (LucasArts first game).
What has thsi got to do with DVD's. I'm not complaining, just curious. We need an excuse before the topics closed down.

One of my all time favorite games is Day of the Tentacle. I still have the special edition cd-rom with voice through-out (wooo) instead of text. It saddens me that one day I will no longer be able to play this DOS based game...perhaps they could translate it to DVD? (There's the link that saves the thread).

I don't think this thread is in any danger of being closed down.

Unless you start going off on each other in it...

Although, I don't see how Grim Fandango could be the cause of such ire that it would cause folks to go ballistic on each other.

(BTW, for a little tidbit of DVDFile history, this topic is from the wee early days of the forum, where we were encouraging talking about any kind software in the software forum, not just DVD software. Oh, wait a minute. We still do. )

Yeah, I have those cool CD versions of Day of the Tenticle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and Sam and Max Hit the Road, all with voices throughout. Great games. SCUMM rules.

I think scumm could work perfectly with most DVD remotes.

I also have the voiced CD versions of DOTT and Sam&Max. Way cool.
I'm a sucker for adventure games, and I'm sure I'll dig Myst. I have the 5th Anniversary (sp) Special edition that came in the cool box with Myst and Riven.

If there only were more hours per day

BTW, did you know that Monkey Island 4 is slated to be released soon? Wooo-hooo!

Yah, but it's going to be using the Grim Fandango Engine. I liked Grim Fandango, but I was a huge fan of the 2-D art in Monkey Island 3.

Yes, and I found Grim Fandango a bit difficult to navigate compared to the MI series.
Oh well.

They just released Dragons Lair for DVD players (not PC's, players). Would it be possible to play a simple SCUMM game on a Player. Anyone know?
Thanks

I played Grim Fandango and really liked it a lot. Just finished it a few months ago, in fact...I guess you can tell I'm behind in playing the games I've bought. Most of the games I've played since then haven't been half as clever, sharp, and witty.

Dom, if you have yet to play Myst (the game that started it all), be sure to grab the Masterpiece Edition--the graphics, audio, and video clips are all vastly improved over the original release.

I'm afraid Myst is NOT the game that started it all. The Monkey Island games (and Maniac Mansion before that) were around a LOT longer than Myst. I'm not a Myst-lover, as I feel it's just an animated slide-show, but hey, it seems to be popular enough.

i dont think MYST can be even put in the same catagory as scumm games. most lucasarts games are like king's quests, go over here, pick this up, combine it with this item, give it to this person, they give you another item which you use to etc. etc...
myst is on a whole other level

Myst is sorta like the Pan&Scan of computer games. Shunned by most computer game enthusiasts and light weight in game play, yet still amazingly popular.

My point, which I should have made more clearly , was that Myst somehow struck a chord with the public and became extremely popular (some would say beyond reason), bringing computer gaming to the attention of a lot of people who had never paid it much attention before. I too had played a number of games before Myst, and many since, and there have been many I liked better.

Yes, Myst surely is NOT the game that started it all. Sure, it's the best selling game of all time, by far, and I spent many an hour trapesing through it's well-rendered lands. But in NO WAY was it pioneering, in any way whatsoever, except to prove that good looking graphics and decent gameplay can sell big time.

If you really want to talk about adventure games that started it all, you'd have to go back to Zork, or Wumpus, or Hack/NetHack. Something from the early 70s at least.

Plus the pioneering claim in the cheap puzzles but great graphics gameplay genre would have to go to The 7th Guest.

I have never seen or played a better game on PC than Half-Life. It's been out for almost 2 years and I've yet to see a game come close! If you want an involving game with a good story and innovative gameplay, then I can't recommend this one enough. Just be sure to take a few vacation days, lock the door, and turn the phone off!

God yes! Half-Life flat out whips ass! I've played it dozens of times all the way through and each time I find different turns and tricks.

I still get a massive charge out of shooting those pansy scientists and I frenquently slaughter of the friendly guards. Heh.

Oh my, we have stepped into the way-back machine, haven't we? I played The 7th Guest before Myst, and enjoyed it well enough at the time. Even then, though, I knew that some of the puzzles were unfair or not even really puzzles (I don't think a game you play against the computer qualifies as a puzzle, but that's a personal opinion). It may even win the Most Disappointing Sequel award, as I thought The 11th Hour was terrible.
