Problems with Evil Dead II?
Hey guys:
Just got my Evil Dead II disc in the mail, and it starts going nuts about 10 minutes before the end, right before Ash gets sucked into the vortex. The disc pauses, whirrs, and then jumps backwards several minutes, and if I fast-forward a bit, the image starts pixillating and going crazy. Does anyone else have this problem, or am I being singled out for punishment. (BTW, I've only got 2 speakers, but the new THX mix sounds pretty ill-advised at times, with the so effects generally overwhelming the dialogue and a hell of a lot of hiss.) Sam |

The new Evil Dead II disc played fine on my Toshiba SD-3108. I didn't see any of the video problems you described. Is it a recurring problem? I've seen a couple of oddball playback problems (one on The Matrix, one on The Abyss) that I couldn't duplicate.
My audio setup is only Dolby Pro Logic (no 5.1 for me yet ), but I thought some of the directional effects were a bit overwhelming at times. It's probably very tempting to give sound effects a little more punch when doing a remix, but it can overpower dialogue if it's not done carefully. I'm wondering if I'll see some of this same problem on Jaws, which I just picked up yesterday. I've heard mixed reviews of the new 5.1 audio remix. Hey, is it me or did the original mono soundtrack not win an Oscar? And it's not even included on the DVD?!? Guess I'll be hanging on to my old laserdisc for the foreseeable future. Okay, I'll get down off my soapbox now.------------------ Wesly Moore ------------------ weslymoore@aol.com They mostly come at night. Mostly. |

Hi
I also had problems but my player being a Panasonic A310 which is similar to the first players released here in Australia, I have had to get the laser pickup replaced. This is a common problem with this model cost approx $240 ![]() I got it modified for manual and auto region change at the same time, total $450 ![]() Regards Andrew |

Michael,
I don't know particulary on Evil Dead, but on some DVD's you can't select the CC's from the DVD's menu. You will need a caption decoder, either a built-in one in the TV or an external one to go between the player and the TV in those instances. The CC's are most probably there, just not as a subtitle option but underlayed in the video signal. ------------------ Unca Dom dvdfile.com Administrator pfleghaar@dvdfile.com My HT My dvd collection |

It's important to make a distinction between closed captions and subtitles. Closed captions are encoded, if I remember correctly, in the NTSC signal's vertical blanking interval (which you can kind of see on the screen if you can make your picture roll--I don't know if newer televisions will allow that kind of mis-calibration). They are used in broadcast televsion as well as pre-recorded video and are intended to provide dialogue and action cues for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. Closed captions do indeed require the use of a decoder to display them, although not necessarily a separate component as many (if not most or all) newer televisions can do this job.
Subtitles, on the other hand, are part of the DVD spec and are encoded digitally so they can be turned on or off from the disc's menu. I don't think it's too common these days to see transfers made from theatrical prints with subtitles actually burned into the print itself--they tend not to survive the transfer process too well and can be very difficult to read. ------------------ Wesly Moore ------------------ weslymoore@aol.com They mostly come at night. Implementation of Section 305 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 has required all TV's sold in the US to be able to display closed captions. Check out the link below for full, mind-numbing details.
