Final Countdown Special Edition Edited?

Hi,
I was just reading a review of the FC DVD that came out yesterday. It said that some dialogue was trimmed. Anyone know about this? After all the problems getting this movie on DVD, I cant believe it would be edited!?

First I've heard about it. Got a link to the review?

My disc isn't here yet, but should be today or tomorrow, I hope.

I picked mine up yesterday, and watched it last night. It was just as I remembered. A link to the review would be helpful.

Sean, how did the movie hold up for you? I remember loving this film dearly years ago, but it has been years since I've seen it again. I'm anxiously awaiting my deluxe set to come in from Deep Discount, but I was curious to see what you had thought.

Like you, I haven't seen it for probably a decade or so, but I loved it when I was younger. I'm waiting for my deluxe too from DDD (shipped on the 27th), and I really hope it holds up.

I've run across my share of older movies that did not hold up after all the years, but I found myself enjoying FC last night as much as I did the first time I saw it. Widescreen and DTS didn't hurt it either.

Dude, I literally got chills when I read that quote at the bottom!

That is great to hear... I've been anxiously awaiting this disc for years and I am psyched to finally watch it.

Haven't watched it yet but I just wanted to add that I LOVE the packaging. Great job with the clear blue case and the double sided cover. The special cover insert not only looks cool, it actually works (carrier disappears unlike the eyes in the Battlestar covers that don't move).

That's it. I'm leaving work early to check my mail. Don't try to stop me.

Picked up my copy at Best Buy yesterday. The 3-D cover has the Nimitz disappear, and it is very cool. Haven't had a chance to watch it yet, I'll try to check it out tonight.

I had seen the movie in the theaters way back when I was a kid, but my more recent memories of the movie are whenever it was broadcast on cable (I think TBS was the station that had the cable rights) or local TV. I think I last saw it 4 or 5 years ago on TV when CBS broadcast it.

It'll be hard for me to say if it's edited from the original theatrical release, as I remember very little except for the major aerial combat scenes, but I'll be able to very easily recognize what was edited from the last TV airing. But from what I can recall, the TV versions seemed to be pretty complete, with just maybe slight editing of less blood during the few gun shootout scenes.

Ah, maybe my mind's playing tricks on me. I'll at least have the pleasure of watching it tonight.

Did you by any chance read the novelization? There were a few scenes of dialog in there that weren't in the movie.

I can't wait to see Final Countdown again (done right). Last time I saw it was when Pacific Family Entertainment released it a while ago (followed by ebaying it the next day). I won't be voting in Marq's dvd of the month until I get my copy from DDD which was shipped about the same time as everyone else's & should be here by Saturday or Monday. This is a release that sounds like a potential 1st or 2nd place pick.

I love it, I love it, I LOVE IT. There are so few movies these days I can watch from my childhood that can still grab me and this one did once I got a chance to see it again - and in widescreen for the first time. And I do remember it as it was, nothing edited as far as I can tell.

Also, does anybody else love the keepcase the movie comes in? It's like Region 2 and 4 releases that are see-through. I wish all Region 1 releases had cases like these.

Mine didn't come today. There was a package by the front door, but it was something else Mrs. Sukr ( ) ordered.

**Sigh** Maybe tomorrow.

I have been patiently waiting to see the film. Have heard about it for years..had many chances to watch it on tv. But I did my best to resist & wait for a OAR release.

I would love to pick up the BU dvd. But one question. What price were you able to get the LE for?

I noticed it is on sale for $16.99,or so the sign says. But it was stickered at $14.99 on the box. Meanwhile the standard release was priced at $19.99. Something tells me,someone put the wrong price on the wrong edition

Anyway if I could get it for $14.99. I would..but want ot ask,if anyone was able to get it for that price,if it was mismarked?

Well I watched it and found I still like it as much as the first viewing as a young teen. But now the whole paradox in the ending bugs me like so many other time travel movies. How could they both ... oh nevermind, it's just fun.

If you're looking at Best Buy, it usually doesn't matter what the sticker says. The price is already programmed into their computers, and when they scan the bar code, the $16.99 price will come up, regardless of the sticker. I picked mine up for free at Best Buy (using a $5 Rewards Zone coupon, and my $20 Indiana Jones gift card).

As for the movie itself, it is exactly as I remember it, although if anything, there might be a few extra scenes that were always cut out of the TV versions. As far as I can tell, nothing was missing.

If anything, there are a couple of deleted scenes in the 1st theatrical trailer that didn't make the final cut of the movie, and they were the first time I've ever heard these scenes, a few extra lines of dialogue between Lasky and Captain Yelland near the climax of the movie.

Only gripe I had with the discs was that they very likely had someone with a non-military background do the subtitles and captions for the movie, and as a result, there is one incorrectly heard boo-boo and one annoying misspelling.

The misspelling is of the abbreviation nickname for Commander Owens. He's the commander of the air group, hence the nickname CAG. It's even etched on his helmet in one scene, the letters "CAG". But when watching with subtitles or captions, it's spelled "Kag". Annoying, but what are you gonna do?

The incorrectly heard boo-boo on the captions and subtitles is a reference to when they launch the A-6 refueling plane. The A-6 Intruder is an attack plane, and special versions are used for mid-air refuelling. Subtitles and captions refer to the plane as an "86" instead of an "A-6".

These are minor gripes, and any person without a slight military knowledge wouldn't know this stuff or recognize it as incorrect, but for film buffs like myself who are also military aficianados, Final Countdown is one of the few films that depicts the military in a very realistic fashion. The movie still rocks, and if anything, it now has more sentimental value to me since I've visited Hawaii twice in recent years and went to the Arizona Memorial both times.

And slightly OT, for those who may be planning to visit Hawaii at some point in the future, the USS Missouri battleship sits across from the USS Arizona memorial now, as a permanent tourist attraction since 1999 or 2000. It's the first time I've ever been on a battleship, and it's very cool. It's quite interesting, as the USS Arizona memorial serves as a symbol for the United States' entry into World War II, and the USS Missouri serves as a symbol for the end of World War II, where the Japanese signed the terms to surrender on the very deck of that ship.

The Missouri wasn't there at the time of the filming of the movie, but it is there now.

They were mismarked as $14.99 in my BB as well (Lynwood WA). Another guy and I grabbed two off the table at the same time and were shocked about the price. We asked and were told they would mark them down at the register to reflect the sticker and then they started relabeling them. I'm going to guess we were the only lucky ones at that store.

Finally grabbed it today, the first place I went earlier in the week was out of the 2-Disc version, and DAMN! great transfer, good sound, if this is what I can expect from Blue Underground I'll be picking up allot more of their titles.
