DVD of the Month - March 2004: VOTE Now!

It's time for yet another DVD of the Month contest (albeit a bit late)! Where the DVD and/or film most admired by members of the DVDFile Forum will be crowned to join the ranks of greats this year's already great winners: Ikiru and Lost in Translation.
Also, thanks for sticking me with a Month that had 5 Tuesdays.

Please list your Top 2 DVDs for the month of March. Your first selection will get 2 points, second choice - 1 point. After a a couple weeks I'll tally up the total votes (along with adding them up as often as possible during the voting process).
Below I'll keep a running tab/ leaderboard of the DVDs that have gotten votes.
Also, I've provided a list of MANY of March's DVD releases as a refresher, primarily ones that might get votes, but by all means you can vote for ones not listed here as well.

My votes:

1. Panic Room (Special Edition) – an overwhelmingly comprehensive edition of a perfect modern B-movie. It’s almost embarrassing how in-depth this is.

2. School of Rock – a major studio DVD that simply “gets it right”. Every extra is so interesting and enjoyable. It perfectly complements and keeps in theme the fun movie.

Runners-Up:
- Homicide Life on the Street: The Complete Season 4 (even though I don’t own it yet, I know I won’t be disappointed by the presentation of the best pure drama in television history)
- Dirty Pretty Things
- 21 Grams (I look forward to the rumoured better edition on the way)

Still Need to Buy/ See:

- American Nightmare, The: A Celebration of Films from Hollywood's Golden Age of Fright
- Beast Wars: Transformers (The Complete Second Season)
- Chaplin Collection, The (Vol. 2)(Includes: The Circus/City Lights/The Kid/A King In New York & A Woman of Paris/Monsieur Verdoux/The Chaplin Revue/ Charlie: The Life and Art of Charles Chaplin)
- Croupier
- Dawn of the Dead (I’m holding out for the bigger edition)
- Demonlover
- Futurama (Volume 3)
- Magdalene Sisters, The
- Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection #5
- Onibaba
- Penn & Teller: Bullshit!
- Ripley's Game
- Scenes from a Marriage
- Shattered Glass

Easy for me:

1. (In the "It's about f***ing time" category): Schindler's List

2. (In the "If at first you don't succeed" category): The Final Countdown

I haven't had time to watch all of the extras, but I'm voting for OSTERMAN WEEKEND just because I'm a Peckinpah fanatic.

But the TCM remake DVD is seriously loaded.

So does that make TCM '03 your second place vote, Mr. Bay?
I'm going to assume yes, but let me know if it's not.

Hmmm, Peckinpah and Bay... I'm starting to put the pieces together here.

Even Bay has to come second to Peckinpah for me. A 2-disc version of Peckinpah's last, which stars RUTGER HAUER? Can't beat that.

Though if Bay/Nispel had cast Brittany Murphy in TCM instead of Jessica Biel, it'd be the movie and DVD of the millennium for me.

My vote:

1) School of Rock
2) Futurama Volume 3.

I'd rather see SOR win over Schindler's List since they screwed up the release of Schindler's List. I mean really do we want a FLIPPER with no Behind the Scenes or deleted scenes to win DVD of the Month????

I don't know... do we? It doesn't matter to me.
Everyone can base their choices on different things - simply the movie; A/V quality; extras galore; critic quotes on the cover; etc.

Ried, nice choices! Obviously.
Fact: I've played that very Led Zep song in my car for the sole purpose of rocking out Jack Black style to it. All I needed was it to be a shitty van instead...

I suppose I'll allow it for now and give 1 point to each choice (rather than 1.5, which it should be, but I don't like .5s).

Tough month...so many great releases.

Here are my choices:

1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: 2 Disc SE No, the film is not a match for the original in any way. But it is still an impressive studio horror film with a nasty enough edge for me to enjoy it. New Line's DVD Platinum Edition blows me away with a terrific transfer...probably the best ever DTS track for a horror film, and loads of interesting features. The making-of documentary is anything but fluff, and the Ed Gein piece is just creepy. I'll happily own it along with Pioneer's still superior release of the original film.

2. The Osterman Weekend Underappreciated Peckinpah masterpiece. Strikingly beautiful transfer by Anchor Bay, and a cool documentary also. So glad they kept (basically) the original artwork. Just awesome to finally own this film on DVD.

Honourable mentions

The Commitments: SE
The Magdalene Sisters
The School of Rock
Homicide: Life of the Street: Season 4

It's like what's happening on Broadway. When you call in an old star...people who haven't been to a show in awhile, turn up.

Well, take it for what it's worth. I can't really recommend the film itself that strongly. I like that it's not a literal remake (new characters, similar situations) and that the cinematographer is the same as the original. But I'm a very die-hard horror buff and I think most will be disappointed by the film in many ways. Still, I liked it even more the second time...so I'm a fan.

The DVD however, is extraordinary...
