Hellboy EE

The movie hasn't been out a week, I know, but here is a little DVD news straight from del Toro:

Quote:
Hi guys:

I am so happy. I feel really delighted with our weekend. Just last friday there were a lot of naysayers that kept predicting we would do between 15-18 mill at the box office. Others kept saying that the critics were never going to get the movie etc, etc... Well, the movie connected with the audience and -in spite of direct competition from other movies- made a whooping $23.5 million dollars opening weekend. #1 position and with an increedible critical reception. VARIETY, NY TIMES, WASHINGTON POST, WALL STREET JOURNAL, JOEL SIEGEL, LA WEEKLY, etc, etc, etc As a matter of fact we rated around 7-3 positive reviews or over in all media. The only high-profile negatives I could spot were Roeper and USA Today. This from a movie that costed almost the same as WALKING TALL with no "marquee name" star and adapted from an "unproven" comic book. I feel very happy and hope you feel the same way. Most of you bguys have been along for the ride. It's not over -not yet- but we have reached port safely and happily. We are starting editing the "EXTENDED EDITION" which features around 20 minutes more of material (mainly focused on relationships) and new VFX. As I write this I feel the overwhelming need to say "Thank you" to each and all of you guys. Spread the word. Be "out there" and by all means drop me a line or two about the reactions in your thetre, etc, etc and those that saw it with you... you all know my email, but -just in case- Abe_Sapien@hotmail.com

Miss you much. Stay in touch...

GDT

I loved the movie, and can't wait to own it.

I thought the movie was great fun. Glad to see the extended edition is already in development (kind of hard to scrap it now) and well on it's way. I'm just hoping that the EE is going to be unrated and that they can maybe digitally add some blood. It doesn't need to be buckets of blood, but when the Nazi knife guy slices up a bunch of people and not a drop is spilled, it looks a little......off.

Yeah, he was talking about the extended cut way back in February. He said that a theatrical cut would be released late summer/early fall and that the extended cut would street around the holidays. But with the unexpected decent success of the film so far, that might be pushed back a bit.

Here's a link to the information and interview I talked about (I knew I remembered reading about it, but it was over on dvdtalk)(the news blurb and the interview are from back in February, and as often happens, things could change, so take it as you will)...

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hlight=hellboy

...and if you're too lazy to click the link (like I often am) here's what it says:

from http://www.thedigitalbits.com/

Interesting news from director Guillermo del Toro about the forthcoming DVD release(s) of the forthcoming Hellboy. In an interview over at Countingdown.com, del Toro reveals that the film will be released as a movie-only edition in August, and then as a fully-loaded 2 or 3-disc special edition in December. The SE will also include a longer version of the film, as well as "a special box with a bust of Hellboy with the gun."

from the interview:

CD: How long is the current cut of the movie?

GDT: 1 hour, 50 minutes.

CD: Is it gonna stay that length, you think?

GDT: It will stay that length until the DVD, yeah.

CD: Did a lot of footage get cut?

GDT: We cut 45 minutes of the movie. I think that the final cut on the DVD will probably be 2 hours and 10 minutes. We're including a lot of scenes that are more permissible to put back after the movie's release, because if someone is buying the special edition, they want to see more. As opposed to trying to be prudent...I think that an action-adventure movie shouldn't be longer than two hours, but that's my opinion.

CD: Is any of that stuff that was cut in anticipation of the MPAA viewing it?

GDT: No, no, nothing, no I didn't do any of that. I really cut it because I felt it was interesting or beautiful or this or that, but it got in the way of the movie flowing. And right now I think that this movie, to me, is a movie that should play for adults and young people. And I don't want to lose one or the other, I think that it is such a nice, beautiful little story between Broom and Hellboy, and between Hellboy and Liz, that I don't want to give it too heavy a rhythm.

...

CD: You've always been someone who has been supportive of the DVD format, and getting as much material on there as possible - how is the Hellboy DVD shaping up?

GDT: Yeah, yeah - in fact, right now as we were recording the score, there was a guy from the DVD, the producer Javier, he was recording the whole session. I think this is gonna be a much more extra-oriented DVD than Blade II, which was already packed, this is gonna be the motherload. And I think that when you spend 19 bucks on a DVD, you better get what you paid for. So, Hellboy's gonna come out in August, with a regular version of the movie with some extras, in December it's gonna come out in a double or triple disk, with a longer cut of the movie, and also a special box with a bust of Hellboy with the gun.

CD: Any planned features that you wanna tease?

GDT: There's a lot of stuff, there's so many...I mean, we have interactive digital comics that Mike [Mignola] did, we have the whole program about the BPRD, we have three commentary tracks - we're gonna have the actors, who we're gonna have on an isolated screen, we're gonna have my commentary with [director of photography] Guillermo Navarro, we're gonna have a commentary with Mike Mignola, we have an interview with Mike Mignola and with me about comics and pulp detectives, we have a great feature with Scott McCloud about comics and film, which is very neat. And on top of all of that, we have all the regular extras that you might expect. We have cartoons that are playing in Hellboy's room isolated in their own little chapter. We have the UPA cartoons of Gerald McBoing Boing, and the Telltale Heart, which are masterpieces. We also have an isolated score track...it's really gonna be loaded.

CD: I know that recently you've said that things on the movie have been too busy to produce a video game to coincide with the film - are there still any plans for a video-game using the film's vocal talent after the film's release?

GDT: Quite frankly, it's not that that they were too busy not to do it, they were busy not to do it correctly, The problem is most people would put out the shittiest DVD and the shittiest fucking game just to gather some bucks. But I think if you put up a bad video game of the movie, and this is an aspect I have never been involved with, if you put out a bad game, its kind of a downer. Like, the Lord of the Rings game is awesome. I spend hours playing it. And, for example, I have never seen Buffy, but the game was very playable!

CD: We're gonna talk about that later, you must go back and watch Buffy...

GDT: No no, I hear the show is great, and I want to see it but my time is very limited and I don't watch much TV aside from the Simpsons and the Sopranos, the two families that I care for [laughs]...But I think that we want the game to be both scary and action in one single pack. And we have to wait to design it. I want Mike Mignola to be involved. We are, and this may fill the fans with joy, we are in talks with a Japanese company to do a Hellboy anime series, and what it will be is it will be short thirty minute chapters, so that you can do 'The Corpse'.

Saw the movie recently & though I'd like it on dvd asap I'll wait for the EE. Glad to see another director letting us know about the plans for 2 editions like LOTR & others.

I haven't seen the film, and hadn't planned to in the theater ... but reading about those extras on the extended DVD pretty much ensures that I will be among the buyers this fall.

Man, I loved that flick. It was a blast. Can't wait 4 the DVD!.
I actually met Del Toro last week. He then told me that the EE DVD will also contain the theatrical version of the movie. So we'll get both versions of the movie. He also said that HELLBOY 2 is a go since Revolution is more than happy with the domestic box office success of the movie.

As far as the sequel goes, for fans of the comic, Del Toro recently said on that same messageboard that it will definitely feature Roger, but probably not Lobster Johnson.

We finally have official confirmation that Guillermo Del Torro's HellBoy will be released with additional footage, this year, and quite a bit before November 30th.

We know for certain that the HellBoy Director's Cut DVD set will contain an all-new cut of the movie, a new audio commentary and an exclusive Excerpt From The Diary Of Grigori Rasputin.

A HellBoy DVD Gift Set will be released on the same day and will include the Director's Cut DVD and an exclusive limited edition HellBoy figurine.

Judging by the artwork, and from snippets that we've heard (which probably isn't ideal grounds for theory), this set looks as if it will be a single DVD, with just the Director's Cut and miniscule extra features. The 2-disc HellBoy Special Edition, that we recently managed to get our mits on, is chock-a-block full of extra features; so this new DC looks as if it will just be an accompanyment to the SE and not the rumoured 3-disc set.

We will bring you more information as and when we get it. For now, read on to see a detailed look at the cover art supplied by Columbia Tristar.
Leave it to Columbia......

That makes what, three versions now?

All I want are Del Toro commentaries, the man isn't afraid to be critical of his own work, and I fell in love with the guy during the Blade 2 commentary where he described some of the CGI stuntmen as 'Fucking shit.' The man's all right in my book.

But I was hoping to just get the Director's cut and now I have to grab both.

Not *really* a double dip when you think about it...

Actually - I kind of like this model. You don't punish the casual fan by letting him/her purchase a fully loaded theatrical version, and you don't punish the real fan by making him/her wait then spend a ton of cash on additional extras that they may watch once - if that.

Looking at the fully loaded Hellboy July release I was wondering what in the world they had planned for the EE extras-wise. I mean, take away the three boring TV shows from the LoTR theatricals, and you are left with little more than the movie, trailers and commercials for the next LoTR films and DVDs (hey I'm not complaining - I proudly bought the theatricals, then just as proudly sold them once the EEs came out).

With Hellboy, it looks like I will be able to pick up theatrical with all the extras this month for $15.88 at Wal-Mart, then spend another $15 or so when the EE arrives. $30-$35 for two cuts of a film I really liked along with a boatload of extras and commentaries is more than fair. That's what they would charge for a normal 3 disk EE by itself anyway *after* you had paid for the theatrical a few months before.

I'll probably put the EE cover on the theatrical case so I can keep the EE and the extras disks together on my "A" shelf, and file the theatrical all by itself on the "B" storage shelf (or be really mean and try and sell it).

man, the uber-set was just a rumor.

how disappointing, but these are the days where double dipping 4 months after a normal release just is a regular occurence.

Yeah, that was a great commentary. I'm wondering what he'll have to say about the only scene in Hellboy that bothered me, where it is so painfully obvious that the film is played in reverse (in the subway, where Hellboy gets thrown into the large pain of glass on the second floor).

I just watched the movie with the cast commentary though. Ron Pearlman does a GREAT impression of Guillermo's voice. It sounds exactly like him.

Yes, now that the Director's Cut is CONFIRMED as being a 3 disc edition with pretty much all the extras being carried over from the massive 2-disc edition,
I will certainly get the 3 disc w/new commentary

Now how long will it take for the SuperBit version to come out....?

Is the 3-Disc set going to contain the original cut of the film as well as the director's cut? If not then I'm going to pick up the 2Disc today and then get the Gift Set in October as well.

Being the sucker of all suckers, I was planning to hold out for the three disc set, but once at Wal Mart, I spotted the display box and was taken by the outright shininess of the slipcase.

That bastard jumped into my hands.

Well full specs from DVDanswers.com

Quote:
Columbia has announced Hellboy: The Director's Cut which is the latest film from director Guillermo del Toro. This new three-disc release will be available to own from the 19th October this year, and should be priced at around $34.95. The director has decided to introduce around twenty-minutes of additional and extended scenes for this new cut, bringing the total runtime to around 132 minutes. The set will include all of the features of the original two-disc set, with the exception of a new director's commentary replacing the old one, and a composer commentary with isolated score replacing the cast commentary. Also new to the 3-disc set will be a Cast Video Commentary with Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Jeffrey Tambor and Rupert Evansover, multiple production workshop featurettes, a Comic Con 2002 Panel Discussion with Guillermo del Toro, Ron Perlman and Mike Mignola and a A Quick Guide to Understanding Comics with Scott McCloud. Also included will be a Video Introduction to Disc 3 by Ron Perlman, a Production Design Photo Gallery, a Mike Mignola Artwork Gallery with Commentary and a number of conceptual art galleries. Completing the package will be an exclusive, limited edition “Excerpt from the Diary of Grigori Rasputin” created by Mike Mignola. Available from the same day will be a limited edition giftset that includes the three-disc director's cut along with a cool Sideshow Collectibles Hellboy statue. This will retail at $59.95

Wow and i already loved the 2-disc version. Now we get a video commentary by the cast (which should be awesome as i realy liked their commentary and sounded like they were having a lot of fun) Plus the isolated score with commentary is just As it was one of the best scores so far this year. Don't know if i will shell out the extra money for the Collector's Set but i am sold on the 3-disc set for sure

That's why I picked up the 3 disc new at the recent DDD sale for $19.31 (no tax, of course - more like $17.92 new).
