Hellboy - July 27th

DavisDVD posted this today:

“Columbia Tristar will release a two-disc Hellboy on July 27th (look for a three-disc extended edition later in the year);”

So - it looks like the "Soccer Mom" release will have some extra goodness on it as well where we were led to believe it would be bare bones. I'm betting soft LotR type extras (HBO First Look type stuff, short behind the scenes featurettes) with the good stuff (also in LotR fashion) reserved for the 3 disker this Christmas.

How long before someone in this thread cries "greedy bastard double dipping" with lots of "mad face" icons? For the record Del Toro announced his intentions to do this long before the movie was even released theatrically.

Me - I really liked the film but didn't "love it", so unless the July release has some very cool extras (e.g. Selma Blair lingerie costume tests for some abandoned scenes), I will probably rent, then buy the EE a few months later.

Not that I was going to get, or even watch, Hellboy anyway, but this double-dipping in the same year crap is getting old. If you're going to do it, follow Master & Commander's lead and release at the same time...

Well -- I guess I don't see the 'double dipping' part if they're telling you a different edition is coming out when they announce the first edition.

It's when they *don't* tell you about it and release 2 different editions close to each other anyway...that makes me all tweaked.

Anyway -- I liked Hellboy in theatres, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought the main bad guy could have been badder...but oh well. Maybe it's fixed in the 3 disker.

Now awaiting specs on all editions.

I'm glad they are releasing two versions. I enjoyed Hellboy but felt that a lot was left out. I'll pick up the three disc set when it comes out whenever it does.

I agree, no plan to see it. Enough with these comic book super hero movies.

Also agree about double-dipping. It's just so frustrating to the consumer. Give the collectors vs. the average DVD purchaser the choice at the same time and I'm happy. Just don't tickle my ass with a feather and give me the works 6 months after I shelled out a fortune on your first "Collector's Edition" .

Hot damn a July release. Before it was rumoured for an August release. I don't care on the double dip as i really enjoyed the movie (which is sadly leaving my theater this week already. Stupid 4 teaters for Van Helsing ) Anyways i hope they dedicate the first disc to the movie itself and hopefully an audio commentary by Del Toro and Pearlman. The 3-disc is suppose to flesh out the love triangle a bit more and show more on who/what Rasputin really is. So come on DTS and audio commentary and some good extras. Baby HellBoy was suppose to of been a puppet and not CGI and hopefully they will include maybe soem test shots of the puppet

If I don't see it in theatres, I'll rent the 2-disc Hellboy when it comes out in July. I have already made plans to buy the 3-disc version coming out later this year.

We have to wait until September for Hellboy in our UK cinemas, but either way I'm going to get the EE DVD and might even skip it at the cinema altogether, if the EE does come out in the last quarter of 2004, and put the price of the cinema ticket towards the DVD instead.

If the Extended Edition fixes the problems I had with the lack of character development, I'll definitely consider the 3-Disc version. I can wait for that to come out later this year, since I didn't really like the overall effect of the theatrical version and wouldn't buy it in that form. I agree that del Toro and Pearlman should provide audio commentary on the 3-Disc version at least. I would also like to see some featurettes on the costuming and makeup which I felt were done really well.

I agree totally.

But what we haven’t been told is that somewhere down the road there will be Superbit theatrical version and then Superbit deluxe extended version.
(as Damitol requested )

From Creature-Corner..

"Got a peek at the artwork and menu screens for the forthcoming Hellboy 2-disc SE, courtesy of Columbia Tri-Star. The disc streets on July 27th. This, according to director Guillermo del Toro and numerous rumors, is the first of two Hellboy releases - another "supreme" fanboy edition is supposedly arriving later this year.

No word on specs for the 2-disc, just look at the pretty pictures below and enjoy."

That cover looks great, hopefully they can somehow use this poster for the extended edition.

I like the cover

Well here are the reported specs for the release

Quote:
anamorphic widescreen presentation and Dolby Digital 5.1 track, the folks at The Digital Bits report that the disc will include two audio commentaries with director Guillermo del Toro and cast members, a DVD comics feature which contains eight branching DVD comics by Mike Mignola, an onscreen look at the Hellboy comic books with the creator and a Hellboy: The Seeds of Creation twenty-seven part documentary which focuses on bringing Hellboy from the script to the screen. Also included will be a Right Hand of Doom: Set Visits viewing option, which gives viewers the option to branch out from the film to a short featurette showing what life was like on the set during that day of shooting. Completing the package will be a feature-length storyboard track, weblinks and trailers. We've attached artwork below along with some menu shots:

Plus we have the extended edition coming out later near the holiday season. Reports are it will be 3-disc set (but my sister who is on the official boards said it could possibly be a 4 disc set) Can't wait for both

This two disc SE is released on DVD in the US before we get Hellboy in our UK cinemas, Fri 3rd September.

I'm going to refrain from buying this release as I'd like to get the extended edition, so I might even skip this at the cinema and buy the EE blind later in the year. I know I'm going to like this film from what I've seen and read anyway, so I may as well put the cinema ticket money toward the DVD.

There's also reviews at DVD Talk and DVD Debate.

It's a shame that the storyboard track isn't constant. I was looking forward to that option.

Sony Pictures DVD & Video

I have had a change of mind and have found the R3 NTSC version at a very reasonable price, so providing it is the same as the R1 SE I'll buy it to tie me over until the EE, then I can decide whether that's worth it.

Some 'official' EE news from del Toro on www.superherohype.com/Hellboy message boards:

Concatenated version:
Director's cut: I was hoping to have it released in Europe and Japan. As it turns out it will released theatrically only in France...

DVD (Director's cut): Comes out in November (3 discs) all the same extras (minus commntary track original) but with an extra disc full of features. The special box edition will have a SIDESHOW HELLBOY mini-bust. This disc has my preferred cut (15 extra mnutes but they go a loong way in terms of story and character) and a new commentary track that I feel very happy with.

SEQUEL: More on this later, but lemme say this: The storyline for it has been approved by Revolution and we are now clear to start the script.

This is badass, I'm all over the box set and the extra 15 minutes sound great, the only problem I had with the movie was the lack of development so hopefully the extended cut will fix that.

I would definitely be happy to see a series of Hellboy films, the characters are extremely interesting, the story is pretty great, and overall I think it's been one of the stronger comic book movies to come out recently. The only problem I have with this is that I hate to see Guillermo Del Toro get tied down in a franchise like this, I think he has great potential as a director and while I really enjoyed Hellboy I would like to see him do some other stuff; that said, bring on Hellboy 2!

Damn this is a tough decision. I loved the movie and really want to get it when it's released, but knowing there's a 3-disc set coming out really makes it hard. I don't spend a lot on DVD's anymore because there's not a lot to go around. Damn damn damn!

Its not an official extra but its a hidden easter egg on the disc (one or two i don't know) But its suppose to be easy to find. Once you find it you are greated by Hellboy and supposibly congrats you on finding the easter egg and says to enjoy some of his personal favourite cartoons. So yes it will be on one of the discs

Damian you know you want the movie
