I always roll my eyes when some jackass movie critic proclaims a movie to be "The Best Movie So Far This Year" when it's, like, mid-February.

What bothers me more is when the studio then uses the quote as if it means something: "It's MId-FEBRUARY, Dickheads! 'My Nieces Sledding Down Mount Avenue' has just as much claim to be The Best Movie So Far This Year if I can get a theater to show it in mid-February!"

i'm paraphrasing, but the recent quote comparing Van Helsing to Raiders Of The Lost Ark just...irks me. I'm sure it's a fun movie, but why compare it to a 24 year old film that no kid under 15 is going to really know about.

"The number one family comedy at the box-office"

These types of quotes are often used for mediocre movies that happen to be the only movie of their genre that week.

-The number one fantasy movie at the box-office
-The number one mainstream gay porno at the box-office

etc.,etc. ....

Hilarious quotes, manic.

As for me, it nauseates me whenever I see a movie hype itself with the critical buzz of "Erotic!" (or worse yet, "An Erotic Thriller!"). The question in the video store that always follows? "Daddy, what's e-ro-tic?"

There was an ad for the film The Commitments which used the single most ridiculous superlative I've heard a critic write: "With a Sound That Will Probably Liberate the World!"

Gooooood....GOD!

Oh yeah, almost forgot...

Any critical ejaculation with the words "Star Wars" in it. (A common example: "The best action/adventure/science-fiction/fantasy/etc. film since 'Star Wars'!")

I will specifically NOT see any film in theaters that uses such a crutch to hype itself. For more than 20 years, EVERY film wanted to be "the best since 'Star Wars'".

I think when DIE HARD 2 came out, one of the TV ads had a blurb that claimed "IT WILL BLOW YOU THROUGH THE BACK WALL OF THE THEATRE!"

I've always loved, "It's 'Star Wars' for a new generation!" for anything that was in space except for "Star Trek"... and even a few that really weren't ("Independence Day").

And my friend made up one the other day, "It's a kick in the balls with excitement!"

The recent ads for "Van Helsing" crack me up to. They might as well say, "It's like 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' only COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!!"

I dont like it when critics us "Scary as Hell!" It was fine maybe the first time it was used, but now it seems like every horror film is tagged with it.

just married

I still remember the ads for Ashton Kutcher's
"Just Married" claimed

"The funniest movie this year!"

The movie was released January 10th.
go figure....

oh, and another 'great' one would be
"It Will Knock Your Socks Off!"

Do I really want to have my socks 'knocked' off during a film?

that reminds me of a time one of my clients recommended me to someone, using the phrase "his work will blow your underwear off!"

It was probably the most bizarre thing I ever heard, so naturally, it's on my business card now...

The TRAILER for Jerry Seinfeld's COMEDIAN does a great take on the whole mindless hyperbole in ad copy.

Yeah, the radio spot that is on the DVD is quite funny too. I bought the disc based on seeing the trailer online.

The single dopiest critical blurb I ever read was for the awful Martin Lawrence "comedy" Big Momma's House, which declared it to be "Spleen-burstingly funny!" Gee, there's a pleasant mental image...

And also to be avoided are movies where the blurbs just describe what kind of movie it is, instead of saying if it's any good or not (i.e. "A screwball comedy!").

Also, very horror movie since about The Blair Witch Project has been tagged as "The scariest movie since The Exoricist!" Odd, considering how idiotic teenagers laughed throughout The Exorcist when it was reissued to theaters in 2000...

"Enchanting"

What does that mean? This came to me while I was showering the other night and I was going to post a whole new thread on this yesterday when I got out, but then I saw that someone already had something similiar.

So, does anyone have a clue what qualifies something to be "enchanting"?
