good bad and the ugly

alright, theres a great new dvd coming out of this title, but i had a question about this and the old disc. Is it worth it to keep the old one? I hear the new disc will be a longer version, so it will not be the theath. cut of the film, the old disc is tho right? I hear the deleted scenes from the first disc are cut back into the film, so if i hang on too my old disc, that is like having two version of the film, can anyone confirm this? Please let me know

There is a review on the website. The reviewer more or less says hang on to the old disc for sentimental reasons - if you want to see the version you saw in the US theatres - otherwise there's no real reason technically or bonus material-wise.

Perhaps they could have used seamless branching to show both versions. I don't know, could be the changes to the soundtrack made this difficult.

I saw the restored version on cable and think it's a much better version. I'll probably hang on to my old disc, out of sheer laziness to sell it.

I sold mine last night...

because the new version seems to bring the film up-to-date with the technologies we have. I don't feel any sentimental need to hang onto the original, mainly because:

1. The print is TOTALLY remastered and apparently is far superior to the original release.

2. The sound is remixed in Dolby Digital 5.1 (compared to the one-channel original theatrical mix on the DVD) and apparently brings Ennio Morricone's great score out in full, lush and enveloping. But then again I've usually found most 5.1 remixes over the original mono to be upgrades.

morricone

Once Upon A Time In The West had an amazing 5.1 track,
did true justice to Morricone's soundtrack,
and kept purists happy with the original mono.

The new Good Bad Ugly disc has no english mono option,
but i can't imagine Morricone's work being 'worse' on 5.1 if done right.

If you are a purist, you will keep your old version.
I didn't buy the old version in the first place, so I'll go for the new one.

I can ONLY hope that Criterion's upcoming "Battle Of Algiers"
will give Morricone's track a 5.1 upgrade.......

I used to keep the theatrical and directors cuts of various movies, until I realised they were just taking up shelf space as I never watch them. If you have a good memory, you know which scenes are new anyway, so you know how it was.
