One movie to watch at the boss' house?

OK, so we won a charity raffle yesterday to see a movie at the company VP's house on his kick-ass home theater system. We get to pick ONE movie to watch with three other couples (including the veep and his wife).

We do have our own low-end DD 5.1 setup at home, but this, we're assured, will be movie theater quality. Plus, it's the veep's house!

Naturally, the movie should have a 5.1 soundtrack, which eliminates most older films that haven't been remastered. It should be a crowd pleaser. And it has to be a movie we haven't already seen a cajillion times.

I've been scanning and searching these threads, scouring our personal collection, and reading the IMDb top movie lists. Here's our short list:

The Perfect Storm - top contender

Alien - top contender

Three Kings - top contender; saw it at a discount theater, but not with optimal sound or picture

Cabaret - great musical, never saw it in theaters

The Matrix - already watched it a cajillion times, including twice in theaters

X-Men - saw it in theaters recently

Brazil - missed it in theaters; long

Goodfellas - DVD and laser are both "flippers"; long and violent

Lone Star - missed it in theaters; a bit slow-paced and won't make ideal use of the sound system

L.A. Confidential - already seen it a cajillion times, including twice in the theater

La Femme Nikita - never saw in theaters; will have to go to the laserdisc (assuming our veep has a player), since the DVD's subtitles reportedly suck.

Any suggestions? What movies would YOU see if you had such a chance? (And for those of you with theater quality sound and picture in your living rooms, pretend for a second that you don't.)

if you want something suitable for everyone that has great sound and most everyone will enjoy i have to reccomend Outbreak.. its an older Warner title so it should be cheap.

Caligula (nothing office-oriented, just something you'd enjoy watching with coworkers)

But seriously, ladies and germs, any recent Bond movie makes great use of all channels. The Toy Story movies are good choices as well, but maybe a little short, and I"m sure you want to take full advantage of your time there. To that end, Braveheart or Saving Private Ryan would be nice loooong movies that would sound great. The remastered version of "Pink Floyd-The Wall" also sounds great, and it might be fun to see the ladies squirm ad the symbolism in the Scarafe animation.

Have fun

Watch "Fight Club", then tell the VP where to shove his 5 billion dollar sound system.

Of the movies you have listed, I would go with Three Kings. Most likely several people in you gathering haven't seen this amazing film. It also has great surround effects. Be sure to ask your boss if you can stay the extra 10 minutes to watch the Spike Jones directed piece "An Intimate Look at Acting, with Ice Cube."

If you're going to watch an Alien movie, then I have to say that Aliens is the better choice FOR THIS OCCASION. No offense to the first film, the James Cameron sequel has much better surround sound. Also, it has the director's cut, which has footage many of these people probably haven't seen.

HOWEVER, if you're boss's system is the best, then you might want to watch a DTS EX 6.1 disc; with Terminator 2 you can't go wrong.

Not that you're going to choose Brazil, but if you decide to go with a Terry Gilliam film, 12 Monkeys has better surround sound.

Stay away from laserdiscs for this rare opportunity, as you won't get optimal picture quality.

An just to reiterate, in THREE KINGS they blow up a cow. That's a film experience.

Screw the boss. I'd bring along a VHS of Roger Corman's ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS and a big tub o' popcorn.

Thanks plimp... yours is the most helpful answer so far. Three Kings was already the front runner, so it's looking pretty likely. We haven't made a final commitment, though, so if anyone else has a reasonable suggestion, we're listening.

BTW, we watched Fight Club last weekend with my visiting parents (mom loved it, dad seemed indifferent). It would be a good choice - satirical anti-authoritarian message not withstanding - except that we've watched it to death recently.

And I absolutely love Swimming with Sharks, but it doesn't exactly reverberate with LFE, does it? ;-)

I don't want to start a gender thing going, but you might want to reconsider Three Kings. I loved it, a lot of other women loved it too. But, a lot of women didn't. While the Clooney hottie factor is high, Three Kings (or any shootem up movie) carries with it a reasonable possibility of annoying/boring one or more of the women, and that one might be the Veep's wife. I'd vote for Perfect Storm as a safer choice, and you still get the hottie! Good luck and have fun!

Swimming with Sharks is not a movie to watch with your boss. Even if the movie had the most kickass LFE, sadistic torture fantasies against the boss are not something you should be watching with your boss.

3 Kings is a shoot em up film, but sooo much more. Warn all guests of the violence ("close up shooting of a woman in the head" might be all you need mention). Find a film that all agree isn't too violent. Again 12 Monkeys comes to mind (some violence, but not too bad). I assume you're all adults at this party, so 3 Kings shouldn't be too much of a problem. I've watched it w/ women of low gore tolerance, yet they were so involved in the story that the violence was effective, but didn't take them out of the film.

Yeah, but Swimming with Sharks might make the veep think twice before ever asking me for some Sweet and Low (or Equal). ;-)

Good points all. Since my wife technically won the raffle, she gets the final say, and it looks like she's going to go with Three Kings. It should rock! Thanks.

Why don't you just watch the best movie ever made?

The Blues Brothers (1980) John Landis

The disc is perfect too. Perfect picture and perfect remixed digital music sounds soooo sweet on a good system.. Trust me, this is the one to watch. Good for the whole family too, cept some tame cursing, at a nun..
