Get a load of this...

This is from a flyer from Columbia House DVD club, touting DD and dts.
"Digital Theater System and Dolby Digital surround 5.1 are two of dvd's most popular sound formats. Dolby Digital (DD) provides an extra surround channel and an additional channel for low-frequency sound effects, while Digital Theater System (DTS) features a six-channel digital sound format."

Interesting huh? "2 of dvd's most popular sound formats"? How many of you knew that DTS was a 6 channel format and DD is only a 5 channel format?

It's nice to see that Columbia House stays on top of technical info... to keep us informed.

They mean over Dolby Pro Logic I guess. Pro Logic has 4 channels, so DD "adds 1 plus 1 LFE" = 5.1. DTS is exactly the same, they are both "6 channel" if you count the LFE as one channel (which most people don't, hence the 5.1 moniker)...

Uh, yeah, I think SeanL knows this. His point was that they described DD and DTS in two completely different ways, when they're both exactly the same as far as channels are concerned.

I think another point was that they listed it as two of the "most popular" sound formats, since DD *has* to be provided on every DVD, and so far DTS is the only alternative available. They're the ONLY two sound format.s

P7A77, right.... I just thought it was funny that they described the two formats differently.

It sounds like a more educated answer than "Look one just sounds better if you have the right equipment, OK?" It's NOT a more educated answer, it just SOUNDS more educated.

One could argue that there's also the PCM sound format, but this fact doesn't make the flyer any better.
