x-men: getting it? or waiting?
hey guys.. on the main page of this site, it stated that x-men is going to be released two times.. the first without a lot of the features, and the second with the full features.. so with the first release coming, are you guys gonna jump on that and purchase the second one later? or just wait for the second one? or just get the first one without getting the second one? i'd love to know what your opinions are.

------------------------------------- Could there be another X-Men DVD in 2001? Director Bryan Singer has been quoted in the New York Post as saying that a second version of the film will be released on DVD next year, which will include many more deleted scenes (including two that the director will be allowed to shoot that were never finished) in a longer, seamless branching version of the film. Also included will be a documentary using video taken behind-the-scenes, and a commentary track. These comments confirm information we've heard from our sources unofficially. We understand that the decision to release two versions had to do with the fact that there just wasn't time enough to get a more deluxe version done in time for street date. We'll be visiting with Fox and Singer in person on Friday, so we'll be sure to find out more. -------------------------------------------- Soo there you go! Maybe you should check out The bits on friday ![]() ------------------ Quark ![]() My DVD-list |

Directly from Amarillo Texas, I log in after a few days absent, and find out this. Idiots in Fl can't read a ballot, so we still don't know who, and they leak info on an uber-SE of X-Men. I can't wait till next year. I will have mine on Tueaday. j ------------------ Co-Moderator of the software forum. The world is flooded with stupidity, and the waters are getting deeper. I think that's the biggest problem, Peter. They still haven't announced an SE, its just a highly reliable rumor, confirmed by the film's director - whatever that means. Also almost always wait for the SE, but since I really want the flick and since I have no clue when the SE will be available, I gotta get the first one. I'm such a marketing goon..

Chest, do you know who Peter is? He is the head of DVD at FOX. If he says no SE is planned, then no SE is planned. Also, this "highly reliable rumor" was started in the NY Post, hardly a "highly reliable" source IMHO. All it is is simply a glorified tabloid. If you want X-Men, buy the version coming out 11/21 because the re-release (if there ever is one) is still a long way off!

I know this is off topic, but since Peter Staddon ( if he REALLY is PS!
) is posting here I must ask if you could give us any tidbits on Lucasfilms' progress on the Star Wars DVD's??! I know it's a long shot, but hey! if we got a studio honcho on the site I'm going to take advantage of it! ![]() BTW, I do think Fox is doing a great job on their discs lately! |

I think Fox DVD's are the best there are on the market. (Can I have some freebies?) Seriously, are you willing to wait for a "maybe" SE release? If so, best of luck. Me? I got mine already, and I'll buy it again in a year if there's another version.

Well, a big Hello to Peter- you do get around
! I'd like to ask something that's a bit off the topic. Are there any plans at Fox to start some type of "trade up" program? For instance, if we were to get the first X-Men DVD and a year from now a new edition is to be released might we get a $5 discount for trading in the old one? I am very impressed with the past year or so of Fox produced discs and am looking forward to many of those coming such as the new Predator with 16:9 enhancement and DTS- got the old one, but with a 16:9 monitor and DTS capability, I just gotta have the updated version. I think Fox is doing a great job with new releases and redoing the old ones the way they should have been done. I'm sooo glad that you're on board with Fox being that you are as much of an HT nut as most of us. And PLEASE let Mr. Lucas know that we want the SW films as soon as possible, but speaking for myself, I don't mind waiting if that means we will see a seamless branching version with BOTH the original and SE versions. Jay M P.S. Looks like I'll probably be pickin' up that X-Men disc. |

I would like to welcome Peter Staddon to the DVDFile forum. I have been lucky enough to chat with Mr. Staddon over at the HTF and it is indeed an honor to have him here. I hope he will be as involved with us as he is with the HTF(given his schedule) and any input will be greatly apreciated.

If a second disc is ever considered for X-Men, it would be at least a year before it would hit shelves (and probably even more than that).
Personally, I'll wait a while to see if a second disc is announced before I buy the first one (if I even want to buy the first one that is). I'm not a fan of comic book movies, but I am a fan of great DVDs. So if another disc could possibly come along in the future, it's worth waiting for. ------------------ Chuck Dowling The Jacksonville Film Journal - http://www.jaxfilmjournal.com/ |

I'm a sucker. Getting both. I need X-Men the movie. I needed it so bad I spent (I shit you not) about 30 hours (not concecutively) on warez sites trying to get it, I did. I figure I can do this since I saw the movie 4 times so it aint really that bad then IMHO

Oh! Well, I didn't know he was the head of Fox DVD. I don't think I did, but just in case I want to make it clear that I didn't intend to say anything that would bug him or anyone else. I'm glad to see studio representation here. If I had known who he was or if he had identified himself, I would have responded to him differently.
Since he's been unmasked, there have been a bunch of questions thrown up toward him. I'm sorry to build upon that, but I'm wondering, Peter, if you can comment on Bryan Singer's multiple comments that he had been preparing features for the disc that haven't appeared on the current version. Surely you can see why we would expect an SE, yet you assure us there are no plans. Any comments on that? |

You should know, it's normal policy for any studio to deny something until the official announcement is made. Nothing against Peter, whom I sure knows what he is talking about, but I used to work publicity for a competing studio, and I know how these things work. You could call them at 3:30, be told that no such thing is planned, and then have the official press release come out at 4:00. Until the official press release is made public, you deny everything.
Me? I can't afford any longer to buy multiple releases of the same disc. When DVD first launched and the titles were sparse it wasn't a problem. Now, with every studio putting things out there, I have to pick and choose. I liked X-Men, and would like to own the DVD, but this early release has some things about it that I just do not like, such as the manner in which the deleted scenes are placed optionally back into the film, non-anamorphic to boot. Regardless of what Peter says, I will wait for a second release, even if it is a long time off, because I'm just not interested in the way in which the film is being presented on this release. They tried something new, and I give them points for that, but they still got it wrong, and I can't afford to keep buying titles twice. I'm guessing that, at some point, there will be another release that will get it right, so I'll wait. |

I'm tired of buying disc twice, also. I've got multiples of Terminator 2, Dirty Dancing, The Exhorcist, Stargate, Dr. No, This is Spinal Tap, Night of the Living Dead, Bad Boys, Conan, Army of Darkness... And now I'm going to have to get the new Seven, Predator (DTS), X-Files: Fight the Future (DTS), Life of Brian CE, Monty Python and the Holy Grail CE, Goodfellas (16X9, DL), and the Adventures of Baron Munchausen... All to replace discs that I didn't know were going to be done right the second time! That all adds up.
Luckily, I heard about The Princess Bride before it was too late. I'd be happy with single-sided anamorphic discs, but nooooo, most of these disc I'll be replacing represent some of the shoddiest DVD production jobs in our fair hobby, lame two-sided non-anamorphic featureless discs of great movies and missed opportunities... Makes me mad! Fight the machine! Don't buy these poor excuses for movies we care so much about. Our only voice is our pocketbook. Money is the only language these studios speak! Sighhhh... I feel better now. Wait! "End of side one" message on my Amadeus disc. Ahhhhh!!! |
