Beware The Blob

Next week Criterion is finaly giving us The Blob! Seems like a good disc, with commentaries, etc. I pre ordered through Amazon (they seem to be the cheapest). Any other old monster movies you all are looking for a DVD release of?

FYI - As a general rule, Ive noticed www.us.buy.com usually has the cheapest prices on DVDs. Most of the time their prices are at least a dollar or two cheaper than other e-retailers. They also have a low price guarantee, and often times they have free shipping and $10-$30 coupons depending on how much you buy.

I checked for you, and the Criterion Edition of the Blob at Amazon is $27.96. At buy.com its $26.99.

One thing though, buy.com put 7.25 sales tax when they ship it. Amazon.com for example does not do that.
(btw, can anybody explain why the 7.25 sales tax?)

It's state tax, so buy.com (located in California) applies tax, whereas Amazon is in Washington and does not apply California tax.

Yeah, but 7.25 seems a bit too much for sales tax on a <$30 item, no?

Though I live in Virginia (where all the DVD sites "don't" have a location), I did do a search for California State Sales Tax and see that the average State and County tax rate is 7.25%, not $7.25 So, sales tax on $26.99 should only be $1.96 (at 7.25%).

Think that's bad, San Francisco has 8.50% Sales Tax so it could be worse!

BTW, it's only 4.50% here in Virginia

Sales tax throughout most of the state is 7.75%, in some areas it's 7.25%, and in some really yuppy areas, it's higher.

I've purchased from buy.com 4 times and have never paid for sales tax. I live in Illinois. The way the federal and state sales tax laws work, is if you purchase something from some place that does not have a store, or facility in your home state, then you do not have to pay sales tax. For example, buy.com is in CA, and they dont have any warehouses in IL, so therefore, people in IL dont pay sales tax. But if I bought something from Best Buys webpage, even though I might be ordering it from MN, they have stores in IL, so I would still have to pay IL sales tax.

I dont know how this will look, but heres a cut and paste of the receipt from my last order I placed from them:

40144835 Gladiator (2000) 1 $16.99 $16.99
80328198 $20 Coupon off $100 or more 1 ($20.00) ($20.00)
40143386 Frequency (Platinum Series) 1 $14.99 $14.99
40143091 U-571 (Collector's Edition) 1 $17.99 $17.99
40142350 American Beauty (Awards Edition-Dts) 1 $15.99 $15.99
40143153 Patriot 1 $19.49 $19.49
40144893 X-Men 1 $16.99 $16.99
If you have any questions about your order, please visit our Customer Support.

Please print this page for your records.

Subtotal $82.44
Tax $0.00
Shipping (Standard Shipping) $7.70
Total $90.14

This particular order I had to pay $7.70 for shipping and handling, but figure thats 6 different movies, that are being released on 3 different dates. Ive already gotten 4 of 6 of these movies, and they all arrived US priority mail, which I consider to be a deal. Sometimes they have promos with free shipping.
