The Thing (Carpenter) Re-Release!!!

Great news.

John Carpenter's "The Thing" is be re-released with a new anamorphic transfer, as well as carrying over a lot of the original features from the first disc.

Never thought that this would happen!

Well worth the double dip!

From DVDfile:

And last but not least is a chilly thriller that is a far cry from family entertainment, the John Carpenter cult classic The Thing. Universal will be reissuing the flick in a newly-remastered anamorphic widescreen transfer, with all the same extras as the current (and now discontinued) special edition: "Terror Takes Shape" documentary, audio commentary with star Kurt Russell and Carpenter, a still gallery, deleted footage, a still gallery and trailer. Retail will also list for $14.95.

Insanely lengthy procrastination on buying something has again paid off*!
Three cheers for ME!

* even though I don't have a widescreen TV, so it really makes no difference to me at this point.

Except for being anamorphic, there appears to be no other difference. I will buy it for the upgrade, however, this is not something casual collectors should consider double dipping.

As I don't have a widescreen TV I'll be sticking with my current one. Otherwise this is one I would have considered double-dipping.

I nearly shit myself when I read this the other day. The Thing is a movie that is watched very regurlarly over here, even if it's only on in the background while I'm on the computer. I'd list this as my second favorite Carpenter film, only about half a step behind Halloween.

I can't wait til this sombitch comes out.

I heard this was supposed to have new extras. Something called "The Blairmonster" and "the Sauser", or something like that.

Any word on that? Are those on the original? Did they get cut from the new release? Am I high on crack?

The extras, "The Blairmonster", and "The Saucer" are on the original. Hopefully they will get ported over. If not, I'll hold onto both copies.

About ***damn time. I've been waiting for years for a proper anamorphic release. Same for The Abyss.

now that i have a 16x9 tv, i will for sure upgrade, although i'm kinda dissapointed we get no new extras, but at least they didn't drop anything, meaning my old non-anamorphic disc can be officially be thrown out

Kinda disappointed that there are going to be no new extras. It'd have been nice if they had done a full-blown 2-disc set, with the movie on disc one (with DTS), and the extras on disc two, with all of the deleted scenes this time (and not in crappy full-screen ). Plus, this being a reissue of a Universal title, I'm betting that we'll get a giant Kurt Russell head for cover art. Seeing as how I'll likely never have a widescreen set, I'm not sure I see any reason to upgrade from my current non-anamorphic version, but for those who have been waiting, congratulations!

I agree. For those of you who have been waiting for the anamorphic release, I'm glad for ya. I only wish they had remastered the damn THING first. As is, it is still great, and at a retail of $14.98 (I read), it is a steal.

Didn't you hear? It's simply the first non-anamorphic disc with a new box art, and with a sticker on the front that says "ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN. WE PROMISE. THIS TIME NO FOOLIN' AIN'T NO JOKE. WE AIN'T SHITTIN' YA."

I look at the Pitch Black re-release for a reference here. A re-release with almost the exact same extras, exact same A/V transfer, and a nice big head shot of Vin Diesel on the cover. With the exception of the A/V transfer (which I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it goes away a couple of weeks before release), I expect pretty much the same for this one.

Did you expect to have your cake and eat it too? With the exception of the transfer, there is NOTHING wrong with the previous release, you get a great commentary and almost as good, one of the best making of documentaries I have ever seen (about 90 minutes, if I remember correctly)

What the hell else could you want for this movie?

The deleted scenes in widescreen, for one. That's my main beef with the original release. Otherwise, I agree that it was an exceptional SE.
