Do you like Guzzlefish, DVDProfiler, or ???

I switched from DVDProfiler to Guzzlefish over a year ago because I thought Guzzlefish had a nicer look to it and more ways to display my collection.

But sometimes it is really annoying. There are 5 or 6 DVDs in my collection that aren't in the database. At the moment they don't have Mystic River or Secret Window!!! WTF? I don't have a scanner so I'm not going to submit those myself. I'm looking for something easy.

I have a stack of DVDs that I have to separate from my collection because they aren't catalogued yet.

Is there a better method for cataloguing these days?

Yes, there is a quick import menu where you type in keywords, but you want to be as descriptive as possible because like a search engine, if you aren't you get more options.

But with this "quick import" you can import at least 100 at a time, possibly more.

Many moons ago I only used DVDProfiler, but since my shit computer stopped being able to use it properly, I now maintain lists in both DVD Aficionado and Guzzlefish but I MUCH prefer Aficionado.

It just looks a lot nicer, and I love being able to seperate my collection (well mainly my wish list right now actually) in numerous sub-folders. It doesn't provide the technical deatils of Profiler, but i do like it as a whole.

The only thing I like about Guzzlefish is the statistics it can give you on the collection, but that's about it - I find them very slow in adding titles (there's still MANY they aren't listing, new and old), whereas Aficionado will add a title to their database the second it's announced.

So a very strong vote for DVDAf here.

I use dvdprofiler, which I like well enough. They can be slow at adding dvds though... really slow. If they'd be more prompt in adding new discs, I'd be totally happy with them.

These are all web-based right?

What I would like is to have a standalone application (for Windows XP) on my laptop that can retreive DVD data off the web, but still allow me to use/change my catalog without having to use an internet connection or a browser.

I saw something like that on a friend's Mac (OS X), but can't remember what it was, or if there's a Windows version.

Well, you can view your collection without an internet connection, and move discs from wish list to owned, etc on dvdprofiler. I'm not sure how the others work though.

I use all three actually. I originally used DVDProfiler. Still do, and it gets the job done nicely. Sometimes I'm set up somewhere where I can't access the Internet, so its nice to have that to look at while I'm plugged out.

I started putting stuff in Guzzlefish because I, like Marq, thought the statistics were pretty cool. I like how you can put video games and music on there too (now if only we could do books too!). Other than that, Guzzlefish is pretty worthless because it is so slow at adding new titles, which I think everyone now has pointed out.

The last one I started using was DVDAficionado, and it should have been my first. What a great site. This is by far my #1 choice.

I also have an Excel spreadsheet going as well.

Even worse than that, they still don't have Mystic River, and it came out 3 weeks ago. I even submitted all the info for the Deluxe Edition, but nothing.

I did like Guzzlefish, but there's been so many problems as of late that I'm looking to switch over.

i have only ever used DVDprofiler, so i cant speak to the pros and cons of other software. i love everything about it from how simple it is to add DVDs to you list, to how the online lists of collections look, plus you can view the collection online by collection number or alphabetically. i have never had a problem with them not having a disc added to the database when i go to add to my collection.
when looking at your collection list that is on your hard drive, there are endless options for organizing and viewing discs. you can see how many discs you have by studio, director, case type, etc, and then view the results in a pie chart, graph or just by simple numbers. the cool options like that just go on and on.
and since i have upgraded to the latest version it has never crashed.

I didn't relaly like DVDAF at first, but goddamn if it isn't THE most functional dvd listing system out there, and with the widest database. If you buy other region dvds, you might as well abandon your guzzlefish account (like I did). DVDAF is simply the shit.

I use both DVD Aficionado and Guzzlefish. Like others, I enjoy arraying my own folders at Aficionado. With Guzzlefish you can use Rank and Rating to play around with how the collection is displayed. I love Aficionado’s feature to look at other member's collections that have a certain movie in it.

I wish I could change the categories of movies that Guzzlefish places them. I also really wish they would put the year most of the shorts were made for the Disney Treasures instead of leaving it blank or the year the DVD was released.

A question for Aficionado users: Do you know a way to list only the title of the disc in the Title/year column? I ask because for the Looney Tunes and Disney Treasures the shorts are listed and take up a lot of screen space, so I don’t have them included in my collection (but would like to).

I prefer DVDAficionado.com the best. I haven't updated my DVDProfiler in a while b/c there are always problems w/ it. I just started adding my collection to Guzzlefish which I think is a really terrific site.

www.dvdaf.com for me, although I have Guzzlefish too.
Yes, I have had some import DVDs that were NOT in the dvdaf,
but after i submitted the titles, they appeared in the system 2 days later.

Now Guzzlefish on the other hand.......
submit a new title, and you may never hear back.

I now use Microsoft Access for my collection. Nothing fancy, but it gets the info I want, and it's really easy to import to the web. I'm not ecstatic about how it displays on the web, but it's easy, and that's all I really need.

I love DVDProfiler mainly because you have access to it off line, you can view your collection by different methods using its filter option, tons of statistics, being able to give a rating/review to your dvd, and the notes section.

I also have Guzzlefish, but that has about 30 dvds, and games missing. DVDProfiler even lets you add dvds that aren't officially released (Song of the South) And the statistics at the top of my Guzzlefish page aren't even true. According to it I have 11 movies directed by Woo Ping, but then I click on it and it only shows 3.

DVDAficionada never appealed to me for some reason.

Well I downloaded and tried DVDProfiler last night.

It would be fine except that font display the GUI is all srewed up. Characters don't scale properly so I see lots of text that's clipped off at lower edges of enclosing panels, especially in the Add DVD from UPC dialog box.

DVD Profiler is the best simply because it is an actual program on one's computer, allowing offline use. None of the other major databases allow this.

I see this as an inefficiency. Do it all on the web. If you are worried that you don't have your list locally, save the guzzlefish webpage with your list and you have it.

I just keep everything in an Excel spreadsheet, export it into html table format, then put it as a webpage. Takes about 2 minutes to do. I can sort however I want, put in whatever info I want, and make links to anywhere I want.

I'm actually still sticking with Guzzlefish. I have a relatively small collection (124 right now) and rarely buy anything new anymore, so it works well for me. I think Aficionado is just ugly and I'm on a Mac so I can't use the Profiler software, which is fine.

Yeah, I'm not very anal about the completeness of my web collection, So Guzzlefish is fine by me, even if it's missing some no-brainers (STILL!) like Beauty and the Beast, Count of Monte Cristo, etc.

Does Guzzlefish take anyone else a year to load the page? Whenever there are more than a handful of titles, the list takes forever to load. This is the only reason why I don't use Guzzlefish.

In Guzzlefish's defense, this site is run by guys doing this in their spare time. Like most folks they have jobs and lives to care of first before they even touch guzzlefish. Now concerning title availability, unfortunately these guys go through a third party for their DVD listing information(Muze Inc.), that are not as diligent in updating their information. Since their site is tied closely with Muse, it is really a hassle for them to update titles on a constant basis. I mean if ppl start requesting, "add this title, now this title" and so on and so forth, this can easily occupy one persons day of just adding titles. Keep in mind that the folks at Guzzlefish do this on thier spare time.

Anyways, I understand why most people hate the site, but really, its not like you are paying to use it anyways...

DVD Aficionado is the best. I've tried the others, but DVDAf will add titles fast (I've submitted at least five) and as Marq said...it just looks so much nicer and is easy to skim through all your discs quickly. I love it.

Thanks for the B&tB and Count links.
I checked the B&tB before, and it's stilll not complete, that's why I listed it - all solid entries have cover art, and B&tB still doesn't.
As for Count, last week when I checked, it wasn't complete - I'm glad to see it is.
Those are the only 2 that were really missing from my collection (other than modern masterpieces like Luscious...)

I don't understand why people have problems waiting a month or so for titles to be updated... but a couple years is a bit much. :p

As for DVDAficionado, I like the idea of the Quick Import, but MAN! Was it helplessly flawed in execution.
It guesses horribly on many of the titles, but worst of all, it has clickable boxes that are active!
When you click one of the boxes, it changes the entry for that title. God forbid it was just a page of boxes that you could freely click, and update all at once -no, they had to make them active, so that it takes over a minute every time you want to change even one entry.

I use both Guzzlefish, for the stats and rankning system, and DVDprofiler for the info on each disc. Guzzlefish does miss heaps of titles, and is slow, but looks muh better than the quick-loading DVDprofiler page. I'm also considering making a DVDAf list.

I use DVDProfiler, I use the software and only export to the web site once in a while.
I used dvdaf also but I prefer having the software, you can do anything offline, even add dvds to your collection (of course if you want the database to be as updated as possible you must be online)

I've been on both Af and Guzzlefish for a while, but I find Af much easier to use. Rarely does Af not have a title in its database, a problem I'm encountering much more on Fish these days. Also, some of the stats on Fish are just plain wrong.

I completely agree. However, one of my TV titles was recently removed from their database. It came out on 6/3/2003, so I think it was the Bond Girls Are Forever that came with Die Another Day. Did this happen to anyone else?

Thank you . I had a blank title in my folder when I looked to update it today and I could not figure out which one it was. Excellent call

DVD Profiler, it's no frills, i don't need little icons of the dvd covers next to each title, just makes the list 3 times longer than it needs to be. I recently added in my family's collection using guzzlefish, and ran into 4 dvds that weren't in the database, and these weren't obscure titles, e.g Law and Order season 1, which has been out for a year or so now.

Profiler is good deal on the ugly side, but it's functional, really large database, and reliable. I haven't dabbled in DVD Afficienado, which i want to check out, but profiler works, and does it's job well.

I dumped DVD Profiler because of the client side app. Teh suck. I now use Guzzlefish, but my list is a bit out of date because I never share it with anyone. No need to maintain a list if you can look at the shelf in your living room and see what you have, and never share said list with anyone.
