MGM release news

From www.darkhorizons.com today

MGM wants to release 12-15 special edition DVDs a year, and coming up soon: "When Harry Met Sally" for Valentine's Day (deleted scenes, including more of those man and woman couple segments, and Rob Reiner commentary), "The Magnificent Seven", "The Terminator", and "Silence of the Lambs" (with Anthony Hopkins commentary) - the 3rd DVD version of this movie!.

MGM was slow adapting to DVD, but recently and with their schedule of DVD releases in 2001, they seem to be really accepting our favorite movie format.

They have been releasing a lot of barebones DVDs, (Princess Bride, Escape from New York), but these movies usually go for $13.99 retail, which I think is a fair price. Theyre not like Columbia Pictures charging $24.99 for bare bones movies!!!

Anyways, look for some good things to come from MGM this year. They bought the rights to alot of old Orion movies (Terminator), and the new Terminator DVD is going to totally kick ass.

I would prefer that they release less and concentrate more on transfer quality (read: anamorphic remasters) across the board.

I have to STRONGLY agree with clortho on his reply! MGM is quickly approaching "Di$ney" status, IMO. A good percentage of their upcoming releases are in Pan&Spam only. I like a bargain as much as anyone, but if it ain't at least widescreen(if that was the film's OAR), I ain't buyin'. And if it's widescreen than it SHOULD be anamorphically enhanced!

I don't mind going without the "making ofs" or the directory commentaries when the price is in the $12-15 price range. But we need to send a message to studios that the minimum standard for ALL films released on DVD is the best A/V transfer possible. This means OAR and OST(original soundtrack) as presented in the theater.

I'm not saying boycott ALL of MGM's DVDs, but as always be selective and ask yourself what kind of trade-off are you making. I got The Princess Bride and I'm kinda sorry now that I did. It is in OAR and has a decent transfer, but if this was encouragement for MGM to start "budgetizing" a substantial part of their library, than I wish I hadn't bought it. I'm still planning on purchasing those titles that do meet what I feel are the standards- thank goodness the Dr. Phibes films are, but I'm a bit worried about the Support your Local... James Garner movies.

From what I understand The Secret of Nimh is being rereleased for the SECOND time in P&S. This is beyond ludicrous.

As I said earlier, being very selective is what we need to do to send them the right message.

They've been doing a good job with their "Midnite Movie" releases, and in the early summer we can look forward to such must-haves as BEACH BLANKET BINGO, DONOVAN'S BRAIN, THE HOUSE OF USHER, THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM, THE THING WITH TWO HEADS, VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS and X-THE MAN WITH THE X-RAY EYES.

Actually I have to say, somewhat begrudgingly, that Disney is putting out consistently better product than MGM nowadays. Even though From Dusk Till Dawn & Nightmare Before Chrstmas should have been anamorphic in the rereleases, they are pretty packed with features. And I think the Fantasia & Toy Story Box Sets set a high bar.

Prices are still a bit high, but at least you're getting some bang for your buck, and the Disney cartoons are cheap if you're near a Disney store. MGM is looking very shoddy nowadays by comparison

I'm afraid MGM took spill for the worse months and months ago. It all started with Child's Play being fullframe...what cojones man! Then..Spaceballs is not anamorphic! My goodness..I mean Fox turned around and committed strongly for anamorphic..and now Buena Vista (Dimension films) is doing the same! How could MGM go backwards? That is the question that leaves me so lost.

The reason MGM is putting Orion films on DVD is because they now own all the Orion titles ever since Orion "shut down". This means "The Terminator", "RoboCop", etc.

Still no UHF, darn it all!

Does anyone think we'll ever see it on DVD?
