Studio Obtained Resource Blindly?

You have already seen my previous thread on the Rhino release of Sextette but this should be a general question.

I received an e-mail from "Dr. Rhino" which admitted that they had signed a contract with the holder of the movie rights (apparently blindly) and said that the transfer they received was of POOR QUALITY. How can a studio blindly sign a contract and put out such an inferior product? It is a waste of money to me and to them so I am puzzled as to why they would even bother knowing the quality of the transfer they received?

Is this normal practice?
