12 Monkeys

How many versions of this movie were released on DVD?

Is there a Collectors Series and a Signature Series? If so which one is the best version to pick up?

Thanks

As near as I know, there's the one with extras, and the DTS release.

That is correct, the DTS and DD5.1 Collectors Edition are the only two out there for R1. There might be others for other regions, but Im not aware of any.

Yes, there are only two versions.

However, which one to get depends. I asked a similar question about Saving Private Ryan.

With Ryan, I now believe the obvious choice is the dts version because the only difference in extras is a minor documentary, but the sound is supposed to be much better on the dts version. With 12 Monkeys, however, I think the "Collector's Edition" version is the way to go.

Why do I say this?

Because the difference in extras is massive. The dts version has an audio commentary, but the "Collector's Edition" has the commentary, a "Making of" feature, theatrical trailers, film highlights, production notes, and bios.

Plus, I don't know about Monkeys, but on some dts discs, the transfer is a little worse because dts needs more disc space.

i didn't know that the DTS version had a commentary.
the documentary on the DD version is one of the best out there. it takes you from the beginnging of the filmmaking process right through production, showing you every little detail and problem they encountered while making the film. its a 90 minute documentary too if i am not mistaken.

OK let me see if I have this straight. You guys are saying that there are two versions. One is dts and one was DD. To tell you the truth, I didn't know that there was a dts version.

The reason I ask is because I saw one in a flyer and it said Signature Series on top. But when I see reviews for the movie they call it The Collectors Edition in DD. Maybe the Signature Series was an early release. And then later they re-released it with all the goodies. I don't think the short intro on the flyer mentioned dts.

Does this make sense?

Esc...I, at least, think there's a commentary on there...the same one that is on the regular version. I don't have the dts version, so I cannot say definitely, but I believe it does.

Frankie, maybe that flyer had a picture from the "promo" pics. That is, cover pictures are released before things are finalized and sometimes artwork is different from the final version. Even though it's years later, that doesn't matter, the flyer might have been using that original artwork. Or, maybe the "Collector's Edition" is considered part of Universal's "Signature Series" of DVD's, a category that would include DVD's that have lots of extra features. I dunno, just speculating.

Anyway, yeah, the "Making Of" feature on the DD version rules. It's more than just one of those lame featurette or HBO-type making-ofs, it delves into every little detail and all the struggles of making the film, including exposing just how anal Gilliam can be. In fact, it's more akin to a documentary film in the vain of the Hearts of Darkness (the documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now). It has a title and everything...The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of 12 Monkeys, I believe. Highly entertaining.

Yes, I agree with the comments about the 12 Monkeys documentary. Definitely one of, if not the, best documentary available on DVD. It has a running time around 90 minutes, and like already stated here, it goes very in depth to the whole movie creation process, even up to the test screenings, and how well the movie did on its opening weekends.

Terry Gilliam has had such an amazing career, from Monty Python to his directorial efforts. Although Brazil was a landmark film, I think 12 Monkeys was his best work ever (and he didnt even write the story).

The best director that I can compare him to, is another genius, Tim Burton. Although these two guys have very different styles, the reason I compare them is because they can put their own spin and flavor on a movie they make better than any other directors out there. Both men have incredible vision, and these are two guys I would go see a movie if they made it, even if I knew nothing about it.

Anyways, back to 12 Monkeys, the DD version is DEFINITELY the way to go. According to the Film Vault at www.dvdreview.com, there is no commentary track on the DTS version.

Go for the Collectors Edition, it was one of the first discs I got, and I cant really imagine the movie sounding all that better on DTS, because it sounds fine here. And the commentary sucks, but the documentry on the collectors edition rocks.

That's because "The Hamster Factor" - like "Hearts of Darkness" - was an actual movie and played on the big screen in selected cities and venues. In fact, the first time I heard about it was at a Film Festival here in Atlanta about a year before the DVD came out. So the Collector's Edition of "12 Monkeys" actually contains two real movies and is the version to get for this very reason.

Ok I have the disk. It's the collectors edition but the back jacket doesn’t mention anything about extras. Did Universal just neglect to mention them or do I have an old version?

Could someone check their copy and let me know.

Thanks

All of Universal's initial wave of Collector's Editions (such as 12 MONKEYS, SCARFACE, and APOLLO 13) failed to list the extras on the outer packaging. Trust me, they're there and you have the right one.

Wow...all these years I thought I was alone in thinking that (although Brazil was & is an important film in many ways) 12 Monkeys is Gilliam's best work.
