Finally My Column is up!
Finally!
http://www.dvdangle.com/articles/12_to_5/index.html Thats the link, and thank you to everyone that has been so patiently checking DVDAngle for it over these weeks, I had no idea it would take so long =) Also the article I told you all about is coming very soon, we've been having to do some revising for accuracy, as well as getting some pictures involved, but just so you know I did about 40 typed pages of interviews for this feature story, and there is just loads of new and exclusive info, so do keep checking the site for it If you look at Paul (my boss's) editorial you'll see the column announcement and a little tease of the story. I'd really love to read everyones opinions, and also a big part of the column in future will be reader mail, so you know write to this thread or email me personally and you'll likely get your thoughts (and top 5 lists) in the next column! Thanks again guys (and gals) :-) |

Okay, please excuse my ignorance here, but when were laserdiscs introduced?
I'm asking because I remember when I was young (< 8 yrs old), my dad would rent a playback device that would play discs in big plastic cases that would have been about the right size to house a laserdisc. Of course I have no real memory of the quality, just the fact that we watched the Secret of Nimh, Tron, and Superman the movie (among others) from these large plastic cases, and so was just wondering if those were laserdiscs (in caddies like the original cd-rom drives had)or whether they were something else altogether (as this was back around 1982-83). |

Well, sadly I think the article was a tad lightweight. I guess I was just expecting this big detailed run-down of several variances between the LD and DVD of FANTASIA, but instead there were only about four differences (three different zooms in the "Pastoral Symphony" sequence and a different "making of" documentary). Perhaps this was just a poor choice for debut title. I'm more interested in a title with greater variation between formats, like JAWS. Don't get me wrong--the article was interesting, informative, and points to better things in the future, but it just seemed a little underwhelming in its analysis. I hope my opinion isn't disheartening--hey at least somebody's at least doing a series of articles like this, which I feel has been a long time in the coming. I just hope future titles offer more meat for dissection!
deepfry, I had a friend who had those, too, and we watched STAR WARS and RAIDERS OFTHE LOST ARK all the time. They were about the size of an LD, though perhaps slightly larger and squarish, and made from plastic with the movie artwork plastered all over the front and the sypnosis on the back. They were somewhat heavy but when you inserted them in the player, something was discharged from inside and all you were left with was the light plastic shell while the movie played (in better than VHS but always pan-and-scan quality). I have no idea what this format was called or if its technology is related to LaserDisc or if it was a whole different kind of bird. Any brainiacs with a good memory? Deepfry, what you remember is CED, the competing RCA system, those were actually VINYL discs with a real needle in the machine that played the film. the quality was nowhere near laser and most films had to go on two discs.
needless to say they werent the best idea around, and they didnt last too long. Filmmaker, thank you for your comments. The point with Fantasia and any comparison we go after is really, can we retire the laserdisc version for this DVD? and if not, why do we need to keep this disc around, even if it IS something minor. And with Fantasia, don't forget the most significant difference - the laserdisc has the original narrators voice! If you dont mind, I would like to use your comments and respond to them in the next column, let me know if this is cool. Next time the main chunk of the article will be the many releases of Boogie Nights, and basically that whole tangled web, but each column will deal with more than that, other issues that come up, feedback and reader mail and top 5's, the format is still evolving and as i get an idea of what people like and are interested in then thats where things will evolve. ------------------ -FutureDirector "Thank *You* Mr. Acuvano!" |

FutureDirector, I would be honored if you used my comments in the next column and thank you for accepting my criticisms with good humor and in the spirit in which they were intended. Here's looking forward to the next column...and one on JAWS after that, perhaps? Sorry, but that travesty of a DVD continues to inspire my ire...

Filmmaker, I certainly plan to. One of the great things about using reader mail is that I dont own every DVD that had a better laser (And vice versa) I will have to rely upon those of you that have particular titles for that information. There are several titles that I've been talking about doing larger examination of, and have been discussing with other writers on DVDAngle, several of them have great ideas that we'll be bringing, but of course I'd love to hear what titles that people here would like to see
we've got Jaws so far, any other Ideas? ------------------ -FutureDirector "Thank *You* Mr. Acuvano!" |

...since the subject of (RCA's proprietary) CED discs came up in a couple of posts above, I thought the following site might be of interest for the readers of this thread:
