Malcolm X SE

Hey everyone - just wanted to let you know that there is a new edition of Malcolm X in the works from Warner Brothers. I saw him at work today - he came in to record commentary for the film.

Be on the lookout!

Cool news, this is probably part of the WBs next wave of 2 disc SEs.

Great news. I'm glad I didn't break down and buy the existing version.

Spike Lee was getting quite fed up with Warner not letting him do a SE,
and he said publicly that he wants Criterion to do Malcolm X with him,
but being a Warner film, it will not happen.

Glad Warner has gotten the idea that Malcolm X is truly an important film,
in dire need of a SE.

Now where is the Criterion She's Gotta Have It.....?

Lest we forget the fact that Lee released one of 2004's worst films, She Hate Me. I'm one of about 250 people in North America who actually saw the film.

Well, it did look bad, but it can't be worse than the current #2 worst movie of all time, which came out very recently http://imdb.com/title/tt0270846/

I've been wondering why Malcolm X is not part of the Criterion Collection and I even e-mailed them a few years ago asking why.

This SE is great news as I've been holding out on getting the current DVD until a "better" version comes out.

Peace...

I wonder if they'll include that bootleg "National Brotherhood Week" music video...

For those who don't know, a film student took the Tom Lehrer song "National Brotherhood Week" and made a music video out of it, using news footage of the Rodney King and Reginald Denny beatings, "Malcolm X", "Romper Stomper", et. al. I remember it pissing a lot of people off and it's very hard to find now.

As bad as SHE HATE ME is reputed to be, I'm still kicking myself for somehow missing it during its theatrical run. I see just about everything -- everything from Catwoman and Anacondas to The Brown Bunny and Stander -- theatrically, yet somehow Spike's latest slipped through the cracks. Didn't help, of course, that it was given a half-assed release in the middle of the busy summer season, but its per-screen take was so low that even here in LA, the movie capital of the world, it was yanked from its handful of screens within two weeks.

A Malcolm X SE disc is definately good news. If it also has a Lee commentary track, that would be great too. I'd also like a Washington commentary, as I think it would be interesting to hear him speak about the character and film as well as Malcolm in general.

This might just be my most anticipated release of '05. Not that there's been many announced. But still.

This is one of the few movies that I have taken the same stance with, Tom. I always felt that X deserved so much better than what what offered. I'm thrilled to hear the news, and that vintage '72 documentary sounds really tasty as well.

I feel the same way!!! Woo-Hoo!!!! I would prefer it to be a Criterion release, because I feel it deserves to be part of the Criterion Collecton, but I'll be happy with this SE!

Peace...

Excellent, excellent news! This was one of the very best films of the 1990s. Many of its scenes left an indelible impression on me.

Goes on my Must Buy list.

I'm glad I held off from the old 1 disc version.
Now if someone hopefully Criterion can get their ball rolling on
She's Gotta Have It, we'd be happy people.

Did anyone buy the single disc? No wonder it took them so long to decide to do a Special Edition.

I own it - one of my favorite movies. I'll be showing it to a class of seniors after we read his book.

Like you'd know what that's like? That really wasn't necessary to say.

It's a replica of a famous photo taken of the real Brother Malcolm.

Can't a black man be thoughtful without somebody calling him a rapist? You need to check yo'self.

No?

Sorry, I'd never seen that picture. In fact, it really doesnt look that accurate. So I still stand by my previous statement... actually, it looks more like Denzel's "look of love".
