Which is better? Chasing Amy Criterion or Dogma: SE?

I'm not sure of what to get.

Both.

Also get Clerks X; Mallrats; Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back; Clerks: Uncensored; and An Evening With Kevin Smith to complete the package.

Chasing Amy has the better commentary, Dogma has the better of everything else SE wise...

Chasing Amy is the better movie, by far

'Chasing Amy' is a better drama, 'Dogma' is a better comedy.

also, bonus points to 'Chasing Amy' 'cause of 'DVD sucks' on the commentary track.

I love them both, but the Dogma SE is the far better DVD.

OK, short and sweet:

Even though both are Kevin Smith movies and both have Jay and Silent Bob in them, both of these movies really suit to different tastes.

Both contain comedy, but Chasing Amy is more of a drama and focuses on gay and lesbian and bisexual themes. Dogma is more of a comedy with religious parody and themes. Sometimes that description alone is anough to help a person to decide which movie to pick.

Overall I think Chasing Amy is a better movie. Though Dogma has more special features.

I wouldn't buy Dogma blind, I'd give that a rent first. Chasing Amy is an acceptable blind buy in my opinion.

Also Chasing Amy is cheaper than Dogma right now, even though it's a Criterion. Chasing Amy is usually $19.99 or less (Many places $14.99) and the Dogma SE (the reissue) is usually $29.99 and around $24.99 on sale.

Hope that helps.

If you get the Clerks X DVD, there are Kevin's Journals from production and Sundance. He refers repeatedly to a lesbian couple he met and bonded with (not like that...). He became good friends with one of the ladies and I'm thinking that set of inspiration for Chasing Amy.

Which I still have not seen.....

I love the Dogma set. It's really good.

I'd go with a lot of the above posts :

Chasing Amy is the better movie (my personal favourite of the "New Jersey Trilogy") but Dogma is the better DVD set (but also my least favourite of the series).

It depends what is more important to you, movie or features, if you end up liking the film of Dogma more than Amy then you will win all round!

That might be why he threw the lesbian thing in there, but it's pretty well known that the movie was based on his own experiances with the star of the film, Joey Adams, and he's pointed out many times she is not a lesbian in any way.

I've never thought that Dogma was a very good film. For some reason I've never been able to get into it. Chasing Amy on the other hand is Smith's finest film (IMO of course.) Go with Chasing Amy.

I like "Chasing Amy", but honestly, it's not a movie I often pop in my DVD player. "Dogma?" A LOT. I think it's Smith's best film in terms of what he has to say.

They're really apples and oranges. "Amy" is very much a film about personal interactions and relationships; "Dogma" is a film about religious philosophy.

Essentially, it depends on your tastes. You want a film about ideas or a film more about people?

Everything about Dogma is better. It's Smith's second best film. Clerks is his best.

IMO, Dogma has a very weak performance by Linda Fiorentino which really hurts the film overall. It seems to me that she obviously doesn't think much of the film and is just half-assing her way thru it (reminds me of Natalie Portman's performance in the Star Wars prequels). I read that Smith had considered Janeane Garofalo for the part but went with Fiorentino instead. What could have been...

As far as Chasing Amy, I thought I read that he got the idea when he met Guinevere Turner and was smitten by her only to find out that she was a lesbian.

Completely agree... that and the fact it bounced too much from comedy to drama in too short of time. I'm all for a good mix, but this wasn't a good mix, IMO... one or the other felt out of place most of the time. Still, a good movie I'm happy to own, just much lower than Chasing Amy IMO...

Of course, Moogleporn can relate to 'Chasing Amy' better than 'Dogma'.

These are the only two Kevin Smith films I own. Both quite interesting. I was never of huge fan of any of his others films.
