original dead ringers matrix code CC1541 DVD L1 (D0953) NIMBUS then a long barcode.
original hard boiled matrix code CC1516DVD L1 (D0919) NIMBUS then a long barcode. its not that easy to read as its printed in reverse for each layer. but if you own a single layer early criterion you'll know what i mean. the fakes put a variation of later criterions that have a very long number starting with CMCA

This is nothing new - especially with SALO. Once one of the bids reached $800 one time, Ebay was flooded with Asian ripoffs.

I have seen a number of these and have reported them to Criterion directly. It is up to them to approach Ebay and investigate the seller (they can press charges, depending what country the seller is in).

You should email Criterion and they'll look after it.

I am really tired and I thought it read "Criterion Flakes on eBay" and I was disappointed that my collector's mentality would not be satiated by having Criterion breakfast cereal. I know I would spend $12.25 a box for it.

Hey, I spotted a store in Sydney selling Japanese R2 fakes. The store is AVStore on George St Haymarket. I saw their bootleg Japanese R2 version of Shaolin Soccer selling for only AU$25. Yesasia price for the genuine R2 is AU$52.

People will bootleg anything to fool unwary customers who perceive value in a brand.

This has gotten me nervous. I'm searching eBay for criterions, and I can't tell if I'm getting a good price or getting a fake disc. I want to get Traffic / Rushmore / and a couple others.

Any advice?

The CC DVD of "Dead Ringers" is now obsolete, anyway.

I just giggle at the thought of some kid hoping to win a bid on Salo expecting to see some kind of crazy horror movie, so horrifying that you can't even get it anymore. I think anyone who actually knew who Pasolini was got the DVD when it was released. Who really thought it would be around forever?

At this point, I wouldn't bid on any DVD on ebay without assuming it's probably a boot, unless they had a pic of the DVD with the original wrapping intact. And even then, who knows if you're getting that disc?

I'm a bit confused about wether or not my copy of hard boiled CC is a fake. I got screwed in the past with a bootleg of The Killer on criterion collection and I just want to be sure this time. I had a copy I got from ebay that was pretty scratched but worked. Tonight I went to a place that sold used dvds and there was another copy for 10 bucks. I inspected it and now I don't know. The one I got for 10 bucks has 2 inserts. One is of the criterion releases and prices for spines 1-i think 9. To me that makes it seem more genuine. The Hard Boiled insert with the chapters is REALLY flimsy. It's glossy and looks great except it's really really thin paper, as opposed to my scratched copy that has a really thick paper. The cases are different so I don't know how to tell which one was the original since it's hard to say what's different about them. The disks: as posted earlier in this topic, both of mine have the CC1516DVD L1 on them, backwards.....BUT the (D0919) is only on the scratched disk. On the 10 dollar one i got the number is (D0627) Is that right? I would be very thankful if someone could enlighten me since I've looked all over the internet. I've reasearched this for about 8 hours. I just want to know if it's REAL.

hmm... too bad the criterionforum lost all their info recently...
ask Jon Mulvaney at Criterion. that's the best answer.

go to the official site www.criterionco.com and email him

if you can see the nimbus logo writing (not easy) then its legit. all genuine insert are folded crisp. you can see white cracks in the crease of all criterion inserts. my fake insert on dead ringers is poorly folded like it was one sheet of paper. there was only one pressing of hard boiled so i think the codes should be the same. show us some pics?

I'll try and get some pictures. I don't have a scanner or camera but I know somewhere I can do it. What exactly is the nimbus logo? Is that the thing that looks like a bunch of backwards N's?

yeah its probably legit. its easy to see on the killer cause its only a single layer dvd whereas hard boiled has it printed twice (dual layer) i dont own a fake HB but the dead ringers one is awful. with the HB fakes on ebay the black box 'criterion collection' bit on the disc doesnt look black enough. and the give away is the case is a crappy push button one when it should be an old amaray one.
