Riddick date?

Has a date been announced for Chronicles of Riddick? I did a search but didn't find anything.

I know, I know, most people hated it. But I liked it.

Thanks.

What did you guys think of this movie? Ever since my son was born my wife and I have been shut out from the known world. I love sci-fi movies but not the point where I'll like it simply because it's sci-fi. Kinda just asking for a mini-review from you guys.

Do you like Krull?

Riddick is a lot like Krull stylistically(except done on a real budget). It's a glorious piece of crap.

I'm a huge fan a Pitch Black so I was a bit disappointed with this, but I actually really like it. I also enoyed the anime that went along with it called Dark Fury. I'll definitely be buying the unrated version the day it comes out. I just hope we eventually see a sequel of some sort, in whatever form possible.

It's not anime, it was not produced by Japanese for the Japanese market.

I am so tired of people calling anything that's not kiddee-toons "anime"

No, it's not

As someone who has been in anime fandom for the better part of 20 years, the term "anime" was first borrowed into Japanese from the french word for animation, and in the Japanese language is applied to ALL animation. Anything from Smurfs to Akira is anime.

US Japanese animation fans co-opted the term to SPECIFICALLY apply the term to Japanese originating animation. So in English, anime is specifically Japanese animation created for the Japanese market, otherwise 90% of the cartoons produced in the 80s would be anime, despite the fact that it was planned, boarded and created by Americans.

I can post my review from when I saw it if you like. "Krull" isn't an apt comparison to my mind, but on the right track; it feels a lot like the science fiction story Robert E. Howard never wrote.

There are some flaws. Thandie Newton is hammy, Karl Urban is wooden...and they mostly have scenes together. Believe me, ham and wood is not the new taste sensation.

Still, not a bad movie by any means. I might pick it up if it's cheap and I suspect with time it's going to grow on me.

My review copy just showed up in the mail today, much to my suprise.

I didn't see it in the theater, so I'll give it a spin this week and hope for the best. Pitch Black was a lot better than it probably should have been, so I'm hoping this is along the same lines.

Sucks there is no DTS on the disc...

Looks like their making it match the inferior repackaged version of Pitch Black.

So long as the DD 5.1 track is great, what's the big deal? Sure, DTS would be nice, but if the Dolby one is full and loud and strong, then I doubt I'll miss it much. Certainly not enough to warrant a flaming smily face.

just watched it.

What an...umm...odd...movie.

Video quality was pretty good, about what you would expect for a new DVD.

The DD5.1 track was good, I wouldn't say it's as good as the DTS track on the Pitch Black disc, but... WOW if you like deep bass and lots of it, this will be demo, show off material for your sub.

The layer change is in the middle of dialog though, which is always just stupid.

The "Unrated director's cut" says it contains 15 minutes of additional movie, since I didn't see the movie before today I can't really comment on what it might, or might not add. I did notice the little cuts where they added more stuff, but the footage all looks good so it's not that noticable. I didn't notice much gore, violence, bad words, nudity, or anything else obvious, so I guess most of the added back in stuff is story.

I haven't watched the extras yet.

Simply because people who are prude enough to avoid unrated cuts are usually P&S lovers. The more the better, I don't usually care if I ever see the theatrical cut again.

Both covers are horrible though,

Did anyone happen to get the Bonus Disk from Best Buy? I went this morning and got a copy of the unrated. It had one of those slip-covers that everyone's doing nowadays, and I figured it would be like Dawn of the Dead, and the disk would be inside. I opened it up and there wasn't a bonus disk! I thought it was a little funny that none of the copies had labels indicating the "Bonus" like DotD.

Hopefully, there's nothing too good on it. I'm a stickler for these kinds of things.

I went to two Best Buys, none of them got the copies with the bonus disc in.

colored stickers

The Best Buy in San Francisco had lots of them with the bonus disc. Practically every Unrated Director's Cut Widescreen disc had a colored round sticker on it which means it has a bonus disc inside.

I was sceptical, but realized that the Unrated Dir's Cut anywhere else comes with just 1 disc. The Best Buy versions have 2 discs in them.

All the best buys in the toronto area had the bonus disc delayed a week and I was told they were diverted to the US market. This happened with the Van Helsing bonus disc as well.

Some stores have copies w/bonus discs that are only marked on the back with a white sticker that has a number ending in 27. They are also heavier since the bonus disc and movie disc are packaged in a slim alpha case.

They also have copies without bonus discs so you have to go through the stock and look for the heavier copies with the sticker.

Has anyone else found that they had to turn the volume up a lot higher than usual to get good sound out of the 5.1 track?

It seemed unusually quiet and it's not the receiver because when I took out Riddick and put in every other DVD, they were blaring at the same volume.
