Worst TV Dubbing

Though it rarely happens here anymore there used to be terrible dubbing of movies here in the UK when they were showing on terrestrial TV. Though it bugged the shit out of me they were also utterly hilarious.

Among my favorites were.

Tango and Cash

Rambo is a primitive.

That toilet is mine.

I'm gonna tear you an extra head!

Robocop

One time I even called him airhead

Lethal Weapon

I say we bury the funsters!

Beverly Hills Cop II

I'm curious to know where his thing is at.

Don't think Axel it makes me twitch !

These were all after 11 o'clock on a Saturday night BTW...

Checy Chase's meltdown in Vacation where they just cut the naughty bits and left silence. He looked like he was so angry he lost his ability to speak.

Though I can't recall them all at the moment here, the tv edits for Smokey and the Bandit are classic.

The featurette on the Scarface DVD showing badly-cropped clips from the TV version is hilarious:

"Where'd you get the scar, tough guy, eating pineapple?"

I also laugh at the TV edit of Stand By Me, where the name "Lard-Ass Hogan" is changed to "Lard-[ ] Hogan" The "Lard-Ass" chant is then edited so everyone in the audience is chanting "Lard, Lard, Lard, Lard..."

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles had a great section made laughable on TV... That's a lot of freakin's. Jason goes to Hell and Basic Instinct had some good features on this as well as Scarface...

Yeah I'll have to second the vote for Scarface I mean if ever there was a case for a great movie to not be shown on tv for censors sake it was that. Pinapple yeah... that'll do it everytime!

My all-time favorite classic hilarious TV edit is John Goodman's manic scene in The Big Lebowski when he's bashing up the Corvette, screaming at the 14 year old kid in the house he's visiting -

"Do you see what happens, Larry? Do you see what happens, Larry? This is what happens, Larry! This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps! This is what happens! This is what happens when you throw a stranger scrambled eggs!"

All though I have never seen the movie, I am sure any tv cut of basic instinct would be horrid.

The best one from Scarface is "This city is like a giant chicken just waiting to be PLUCKED !"

Better then that from the same movie...

I agree about Smokey and the Bandit's TV dubbing. Jackie Gleason doesn't even dub his own voice. IMHO, I swear it's the guy who voiced Fred Flintstone. Halfway through a sentence, Gleason suddenly sounds like hapless Fred. My biggest complaint: changing "SUM-BITCH!" to "SCUM-BUM!"

While I'm waxing Hal Needham's filmography, the old VHS version of The Cannonball Run was edited for language. Half the humor of that flick is the dirty language. An example:

Victor: Nice car, father!

Jamie Blake (Dean Martin, natch): Thank you, asshole.

Absolutely priceless!

DEFINITELY Big Lebowski:

"This is what happens when you pump a stranger's gas!"

(if you haven't seen it you won't have a clue what it originally was)

I agree with you guys on Smokey And The Bandit's TV broadcasts.. soooooooo much funnier than the actual movie! And I though the same thing about Jackie's dubber (a word?) sounding like Fred Flintstone. I guess since The Flintstones was a rip off of The Honeymooners, it would only make sense that Fred dubbed for Jackie..

(Words in capitals are said by "Fred Flintstone"..

Justice: Where's the john.. I GOTTA WASH.

Justice: Don't go home.. Don't go eat.. and don't PEEL OFF YOUR CLOTHES, HUH.. It wouldn't look nice on my highway

Blue Velvet. I'm pretty sure it aired, but they did make a TV edit of it where they had to dub 90% or so of Frank Booth's dialogue.

"Shoot yeah, pour the freakin' beer! One thing I can't stand is warm freakin' beer, makes me wanna freakin' puke!"

"I'll freak anything that moooooooves!"

Oh, and it is Henry Corden AKA Fred Flintstone (number 2) who dubbed Jackie Gleason. That voice is unmistakable.
