Angel Season 5 Specs

Source

Quote:
In the final season, Angel has finally emerged from 200 years of darkness, but the fine line between good and evil is harder to see than ever!

That's the tag line for Angel - The Complete 5th Season, which Fox is announcing this Halloween weekend (how appropriate!) for an in-store date of February 15, 2005. Fox's information shows that this will be released in 16x9 Anamorphic Widescreen, which is what we would expect (please read the "Video" section of our 4th Season review, as well as Creator Joss Whedon's statement for more details). Sound is in Dolby Digital Surround 2.0 for each of the English, French, and Spanish soundtracks provided. Also found are English and Spanish subtitles.

List price is $59.98 (CAN$89.98 in Canada), for 990 minutes that cover 22 episodes. Among those, look for a special re-appearance by Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia. Fox Home Entertainment hasn't sent out the cover art yet (stay tuned for that), but here is the disc-by-disc breakdown of episodes and announced extras:

Disc 1:
"Conviction" (Part 1) - Commentary by Writer/Director Joss Whedon
"Just Rewards" (Part 2)
"Unleashed"
"Hell Bound"
Featurette:
"Hey Kids! It's Smile Time!"

Disc 2:
"Life of the Party"
"The Cautionary Tale of Nemero Cinco"
"Lineage"
"Destiny" - Commentary by Director Skip Schoolnik, Writers David Fury and Steven S. DeKnight and Juliet Landau.

Disc 3:
"Harm's Way"
"Soul Purpose" - Commentary by Director / Actor David Boreanaz, Writer Brent Fletcher, Christian Kane
"Damage"

Disc 4:
"You're Welcome" - Commentary by Director / Actor David Fury, Christian Kane and Sarah Thompson
"Why We Fight"
"Smile Time"
"A Hole In The World" - Commentary by Writer/Director Joss Whedon, Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof
Featurette:
"Angel 100"

Disc 5:
"Shells"
"Underneath" - Commentary by Director Skip Schoolnik, Writer Elizabeth Craft, Writer Sarah Fain and Adam Baldwin
"Origin"
"Time Bomb"
Featurette:
"Angel: Choreography of a Stunt"

Disc 6:
"The Girl in Question"
"Power Play"
"Not Fade Away" - Commentary by Co-Writer/Director Jeffrey Bell
Featurettes:
"Angel: The Final Season" (27:15)
"To Live & Die in L.A.: The Best of Angel" (8:48)
"Halos and Horns: Recurring Villainy" (9:22)
"Angel Unbound: The Gag Reels" (8:51)

Can't wait! Finally some Amy Acker and David Boreanaz commentary!

Cool, right after my Birthday! The end of the Buffyverse shall be my present.

Kind of sad though, now that I think about it.

Man i only have Season 1 so far on dvd but i think Season 5 was the best for the show sadly the last too. But i think its a sure buy for me (should have money again by then) and i can't wait for the chance to see Angel as a puppet over and over again

Is season five an improvement over season four? I didn't think four was as strong as season three was, and after having watched it again I believe that even more strongly. Does season five take the show out in style?

"in style"?

well, depends on what you liked about the show. after season four (an 18-episode long story arc?!?) the WB insisted on individual stand-alone "monster of the week" episodes this time before they'd agree to another season. plus, there's a lot more humor this season, (gallows humor, to be sure) if that kind of thing floats your boat.

me? I loved about 90% of season five, but episodic TV isn't Whedon's forte. I would have preferred another long story-arc myself. plus, it is kinda erratic how the stories go from intense angst to wacky hijinks and back again. watching the episodes one at a time is a lot more satisfying than watching the whole season together.

also, they got the news about the cancellation of the series during the filming of episode 17, so the ending seems kinda rushed. and, much like 'Buffy season 7', there's a lot left unexplained. if that kind of thing bothers you.

Season 5 definitely had more stand-alone episodes, but despite some inconsistent writing in the early part of the season, I think it was very solid and featured some of the best episodes of the series. I don't place S5 as high as the incredible S4, but the second half of the season is as good as any previous season. Some people didn't like the series finale, but I thought it was a fitting conclusion, emphasizing some of the major themes that ran through the entire series. Hopefully we'll see the Fang Gang in some form in the future (though hopefully not on the WB).

Supposibly WB has the right's to five exclusive 2 hour episodic movie of the week. David Boreanaz said though that he doesn't want to/wont do them really unless they bring Angel to the big screen.

Which i would also love a hell of a lot better then movie of the week stuff.

S5 was definitely the FUNNIEST season of "Angel", which is a plus. "Smile Time" is utterly amazing.

Looking forward to it. Season five wasn't great, but I still enjoyed it a bit. Was good to be able to see Spike again.

Cover and Disc Art:

I'm pretty pissed that Spike is on the cover. It should have been Cordy still. No continuity issues with the sets if she was on it.

I haven't watched any of it, but wasn't she in like... one episode of the season?

Yep, just the one. Cordy played a small, but integral role in the final season but Spike got nearly as much screen time as Angel himself. Plus, everyone just loves ol' Blondie Bear. I would've been shocked if they hadn't put him on the cover somewhere.
