Well here's a site that a regular poster on the IGN Insider DVD Boards has made up. Break down for all 3 movies and their dvd releases The best is currently the Book of the Dead edition. But was a limited production and a bit expensive to get when. . .

you can buy for 1/2 maybe even a 1/3 of the price this edition. Which doesn't have some extras from the edition above but contains some exclusive extras of their own. Transfer and sound are the same so might be the best one to get in the end.

I actually prefer the Elite version, if only for the proper framing.

this is the edition i own, it had the proper OAR, where the Anchor bay is a modified widescreen transfer and the OAR was fullscreen 1:33.1

My life wouldn't be complete without owning both the Book of the Dead version and the Elite release. Both are superb.

The Elite release looks fantastic and is presented in its OAR. The Book of the Dead has several nice extras (some also found on the Elite edition) and an interesting alternate framing.

So Marq, would you say that two own those two versions (which I do), it would give you the most complete look at the film on DVD?

I also own both but I have to admit I mostly watch the BOTD version.
I just prefer WS even though itīs not the OAR but since Raimi supervised and approved of the modification, itīs absolutely cool with me. Plus both of my ED DVDs are signed by Raimi and the complete cast, so Iīm keeping both, of course.

evil dead 1 - elite release
evil dead 2 - anchor bay release
army of darkness - any of the anchor bay releases

there is at least one sight gag the WS framing of BOTD obscures, elite is the best presentation of the oar available

Exactly what I'm saying!
This book is a nice companion to the film as well.

Whee, I knew my October wouldn't be complete without seeing a topic on Evil Dead!

I still stand by my insistance that this film was probably never shown in 1.33:1, regardless of some of the framing issues on the newest AB versions. I feel many shots look better when framed in the wider format because Raimi knew theaters would matte it. And if anyone has proof either way (because I'm still waiting to come across any), I'd love to see/hear it.

IIRC, Raimi did not supervise the BOTD transfer, because of time constraints involved with Spider-Man. Bruce actually just signed off on the transfer for Raimi, since it is fairly obvious there was no re-framing for the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. It's just hard matted, and some shots suffer as a result. There were various screenshots that pointed out the differences from around the time the BOTD edition came out.

Yes, I was one of the people who did that. And as I stated, although some of the shots aren't framed right, there are some that look better in a wider format. If anything, I feel Sam shot keeping both aspects in mind. (as I said, knowing full well most theaters would matte the film).

Book 'o the Dead is by far the best. You can still find it around.
