Seriously, with the sheer amount of DVD etailers out there, there really is no reason to join a club, except for the "deals" you get up front, provided you cancel the membership the nanosecond you fulfill your obligations.
I was looking through CH's website, and honestly couldn't find 4 DVDs they owned that I don't already have, that I'd want to own. I was a member last year, and even their "bargains" aren't worth it, because they usually sell stuff based on MSRP, and kill you with shipping. Just go to etailers, the selection is vast so you can get exactly what you want, when you want, you'll get deals on pre-orders, and if a period of time elapses where you can't find a disc you want to buy, you don't have to worry about the obligations of membership. |

I agree with Mani. CH was well worth the effort for their laserdisc club because LDs cost so much on average. When I joined, I got all three Star Wars films for $1 each (list $60 each) and ended up far better off than if I had bought them and the other titles elsewhere.
But DVDs are so inexpensive by comparison, and with everybody and his brother discounting them, CH just doesn't hold up as a good deal. I joined thinking otherwise, and probably ended up spending as much or more than I would have spent buying them outside of the club. And besides shipping of $2.50 *per title*, they also add sales tax to every purchase regardless of where you live. I cancelled as soon as I met the requirement. If youre interested in joining Columbia House, then you need to visit DVDTalk.com first. They have an entire thread about how to get the most for your money there. Its not a scam, and if you follow their directions and use the promotional codes, you can get a membership that will get you 7 movies for an AVERAGE price of less than $10 a movie. I've done this twice, and I've gotten movies with high retail prices like Good Will Hunting SE (Retail $29.99), Apollo 13 SE (Retail $27.99), Clerks (Retail $32.99), and many others for less than $10 total. The really nice thing is, is that you can have two memberships per household active at a time, and once you cancel, you can join right back up.
Although they dont have an AWESOME selection, they do feature over 1500 movies, and have a good majority of titles. For those of us who are looking to expand their collections, I think this is a great way to go. If you want to read the full scoop on how to do this, check out: http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/018370.html |

If you use the D7G code, you get to pick four DVDs for only .$75 each with free shipping (despite what the site tells you), then an additional one for 14.99, and only two more to buy withing two years. This is a great deal if you pick high-value disks as your enrollement selections, and cheaper ones for your fulfillment selections. Its an average of about $9 per DVD. Just thought I would share!
