Supplements: A one shot deal?
Thought I would ask this of my fellow DVD fanatics: How often do you find yourself going back and watching supplements on DVD titles once you've seen them all?
The reason I ask is that I've noticed, especially with 2 disc sets that once I've seen it all, that's pretty much it, the supplement disc never again sees the light of day. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for 2 disc MEGA SE's. But I sometimes wish that the added material would be produced into extended featurettes with narration and interviews, documentary style like on the Abyss. I think I would be more into watching these type of things instead of stepping through page after page of text based supplements or navigating through 2 hours of one minute long snippets like on the Ultimate Toy Box. It depends on the supplment, of course. But I doubt I'd watch most of them more than once, and very few of them more than twice.
I'd actually rather have supplements isolated. I don't want to watch or listen to a bunch of narration just to get to what I really want to see. Tho' if they're REALLY short, then yeah, somethign to tie it together would be nice. But in the case of Fight Club, I like that everything is by itself. Of course, people are going to read this and use it as a case against loaded SEs... while I may only watch most supplements once, they DO help with my appreciation of the movie. I liked Fight Club, but I didn't *love* it until I saw all that went into it. Well, okay, that might be a bad example, because I'd probably come to my opinions on it with multiple viewings anyway, but still... the supplements, even if they're one-time viewing, can contribute to one's appreciation of a movie. |

As a fan of reference material on the making of movies (and filmmaking art, techniques, and processes), I pop in these discs and supplements frequently to check facts and learn (and re-learn) at the feet of the masters.
But then, I have a site devoted to just such info. For the average consumer of DVDs, these features may have less repeat viewing value. ------------------ Best, Dave Kramer http://fromscript2screen.com |

Believe it or not, I RARELY look at the special features on any of the DVDs I own. I get the SE versions of titles to have access to the extra stuff and I like to show guests the extra stuff, but as for myself I'm mainly into the main movie.
I've watched SOME of the special features on Gladiator and Fight Club and The Matrix and maybe a couple of more titles. Generaly speaking, I'll pre-order a DVD, watch it (the main movie) when it comes in and then add it to the stack of DVDs in my collection. I rarely ever watched the extra features on most of my special edition LDs either. When I get box sets of titles, like Se7en or Star Wars, I still don't check out the extra stuff. Then I'll watch a movie (DVD or LD) with a friend and they might ask "I wonder how they did that", then I'll put on the exra stuff to see if we can find out. Peace..... |

I don't put a DVD in my "library" until I've gone through all the contents--until then, they just kind of stay in a messy pile on the floor near the TV.
So I do make a point of going through all the supplementary materials. Of course, some extras are lame and I don't spend much time on them, but the really interesting stuff is well worth the time.Now...how much do I watch more than once? Not a lot. I can think of a couple of documentary segments or commentaries that are interesting enough to share with friends, and a lot of people enjoy seeing deleted scenes. Some of the effects-analysis segments on the Aliens laserdisc box set some years back are purely fascinating. ------------------ Wesly Moore ------------------ weslymoore@aol.com My collection...out of control They mostly come at night. Half of my suplimental discs have never seen the light of day. T2UE, TS2, The Abyss, Fight Club. I am not really into the supliments thing. I am more interested in the film.
