Which Lost In Translation Cover is Worst?

Here are 4 different DVD covers for Lost In Translation from around different places.
What's the deciding vote on the worst?
I thought I would do "Best" but it might have been difficult to choose.

#1 US R1

#2 Can R1

#3 Korea R3

#4 Japan R2

#5 US R1 reissue

Well the American cover was close but i had to go with (even though she looks fine in the picture) the Japanese cover. Like i said she looks very fine in the picture but the design is just plain and empty in a way. Sure it represents the meaning of the movie in a way as well but still i would like to see something a bit more creative. It looks like a simple polaroid picture slapped on a cover with poster/cast info on the bottom.

The Korean and new Focus release would get my top picks. Korean would of been awesome has they kept the city back drop and not a washed out yellow cover. The new Flocus release is simple and classie looking. Not a tone of critic reviews or anything slapped on it.

Well, except for the
  • Enormous yellow border
  • Gratuitous "Academy award winner best screenplay" (best pic/actor/actress I can understand trumpeting but the word screenplay isn't going to resonate with too many people)
  • The completely unnecessary "2003"

So yea, I'd say the US reissue is probably the worst.

The Canadien cover comes closest to working since it keeps the understated, playful font from the movie posters. A pretty good choice for capturing the feeling of the film. If they just removed everything above the actors' names (and made the actors' name smaller) it'd be pretty solid.

But of course that would never happen since white space is the devil to studio designers apparently.

I also think the bedraggled Bill Murray image works better then the Scarlett picture mainly because there has to be some hint of sadness to be true to the movie it holds.

I'd have to go with the Japanese too.

BTW, what's with this Spotlight re-issue? What's on that then, and when was that announced?

I hate seeing reviewers' quotes on any DVD cover as much as the use of gold on any border; here's my selection from worst to first:

1. US R1
2. US R1 reissue
3. Canada R1
4. Japan R2
5. Korea R3

That Korean one brings a tear to my eye. Simply beautiful. Apparently, Scarlett is equally recognizable to Koreans as Bill Murray is, where as here in America...we must have trouble figuring out who she is.

I mocked one up for a US release. I have one I like alot better that I printed off that uses the 'Dinosaur' background poster art.

I used the secondary tagline since I was using a Korean coverart:

That US re-release (#5) at the bottom is terrible.

I'd have to say that one is the worst. Though I am not crazy about the first Region 1 cover either.

I vote the Canadian cover is the best, though I do like the photo in both the Japanese and Korean covers. If either of those two were tweaked a little bit, they could easily be number 1 in my book.

I like a little bit of writing on a cover (depends on the movie of course) but not too much. Sometimes writing can kill the cover. You can tell most of the US covers are designed to attract attention since most people in the US don't know a damn thing about the movies they watch.

I've always thought a cool cover for this movie would be one that had mutiple shots from the movie. Maybe a series of 4 to 6 photos slightly interposed together. Show both of them sitting alone at the bar, both of them wandering the city alone and perhaps both of them laying alone in bed. It wouldn't spoil anything, but you'd learn that one of the focal points of the movie was about two lonely people finding each other in a strange land.

I'm going with the US reissue too. It's U G L Y. The Japanese cover is the best of this batch IMO.

Might as well throw in the old WIP of the coverart I am using now. Of course, the one I have now is much higher res and I rearranged a few things....but just wanted to show the potential of using alternate poster art:

It never fails to amaze me how little sense of composition most people have. It stems, I think, from the way we're increasingly forcing art out of public education. As a society, we're visually illiterate. I don't exempt you Canucks from that; it's basically the same society.

From worst to best:
US Reissue
US
Canadian
Korean
Japanese

Although the two fan examples come close to the best. The second (Hardcore Legend's) might be the best so far in this thread.

I mis-voted. I thought I was voting for best art. I think the Korean is the finest by far.

I like your coverart. I think it is the best one of the lot.
We'll just ignore Bill Murray.

Which DVD is best to get? I couldn't find much info on the other region discs. Also if the other ones are just as good, where can I get either the Korean or the Japanese one for a reasonable price?

All the discs have basically the same content,
albeit a few have different dubbed languages,
and also Japan which has a few Japanese Trailers for the movie,

but only the Region 1, Region 2 UK, Region 2 Japan, and Region 3 HK have the DTS.
Korean, Australian, French, etc dont have it.

check out www.cdjapan.co.jp , www.koreandvds.com , www.yesasia.com for the imports

I like the Japanese cover the best, followed by the Korean. The US rerelease is definatly the worst by far IMHO.

I think the original US edition is the worst: why would anyone care what Thelma Adams has to say (who the hell is Thelma Adams anyway)? Her quote takes up more space on the cover than the names of the two actors starring in the film. It's grotesque.

I like the understated minimalist design of the Japanese cover- nice and clean and a beautiful picture of SJ to boot.
