DVD Problems

OK, I've had a lot of problems with DVDs, almost all the ones I have, I've had to replace because they were damaged. some with minor problems, some completely unplayable. Does anybody have any sugggestions as to what I can do? or how I can prevent it? Is there something I'm doing wrong? I don't mishandle them, I keep them in their containers, I don't let them get dusty or leave them out... Is there some solution I can use? Some product that will clean them, so that I don't have to keep exchanging them?

There is an article about the longevity and durability of CDs/DVDs.

Unfortunately DVDs are susceptible to damage and data loss.

* DVDs don't like heat and moisture
* The center might crack or disc may warp due to being held by case hub and being spun at extreme velocity in a DVD drive

Use an old laser disc - then you can do two at once!

If it happens to all your dvds and you're actually being careful, the only reason that I can see is: The problem is probably your dvd player.

No, it doesn't happen to all of them. That's the weird thing. also, I'll have a DVD for a while, I'll watch it a few times and it's fine, then the next time I watch, it's messed up, there's snow or a scene is completely deleted...but, for example, I've had Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker for years and have never had a problem

How many dvds do you have, and how many have or had problems?

Wow. Are you sure your problem isn't your dvd player? I've got over 350 in my collection and I've only had one that has given me trouble. That many faulty discs...I've just never heard of anyone losing that many discs.

Yeah, either you have a problem with your DVD player or your mishandeling them in someway. Assuming you use all the standard precaustions like not storeing them on your car dash board, or in your oven I would lean towards your dvd player is eating them.

all I can suggest is to get ahold of a second DVD player and see which discs play okay there (having any problems returning them to the store?). if the same discs keep showing flaws (in the same places) on different players, then it's the discs. if not, maybe your player is screwed up (bad laser alignment, region code error, a pissed off underpayed employee on the assembly line...)

and always remember the two rules to live by:

1. NEVER buy used discs.

2. there is no such thing as a decent DVD player for less than $3000.

Also if it's an older player some disks where notorious for causing some players to bawk, T2 SE and The Matrix first release come to mind. It has to be the player usually theres not that many prolems with the disk authoring. But the again I own the original Batman The Movie disk so who am I to give advice. ::::POW!!!!!! BAM!!!!!! ::::::

When you have a large percentage of problem discs, you're either the unluckiest DVD collector of all time in getting so many glitchy discs, or your player might be faulty and have problems playing the discs smoothly. From my own experience and from what I've read of other people's experiences, the percentage of glitchy discs you will likely encounter should be under 5%, which is already a pretty high number. I've encountered glitchy discs with about 1% of my collection, and most times, it's due to a manufacturing glitch of the disc.

Get a 2nd player, preferably from another manufacturer different from your first DVD player, and test out all of the glitchy discs. If they all encounter the same exact problems on both players, then you can label yourself as the unluckiest DVD collector on the planet.

Maybe I'll do that, I'll give them to two of my friends that have DVD players and see if they encounter the same problems. Thanks for the advice

Question: What do the dvd's (the actual disc) look like that are giving you problems? Take it out of the case, flip it over and under a good source of light tilt it so you can see if there are scratches or fingerprints. Look for wear too (deeper grooves than those that are part of the normal manufacturing process). Compare to those that are trouble free for reference.

If it's smudged or has finger prints....try this: Take warm running water, some liquid soap and a clean terry type cloth. Wipe from the middle of the disc out to the edge in straight lines, rinse, let dry and try again.

If there are unusual looking grooves, then I say it's your player screwing up.

Well, that's my 2 cents.....best of luck to ya!

Samsung, huh?

I know the DVD709 and DVD739 players did have a lot of trouble with some early discs, so it could be they still have trouble with later ones too.

My advice is to buy another player.

It sounds to me like you are having DVD player issues. I have about 300 DVDs and have only had one actual bad disc. My two players both have played everything but my defective copy of Galaxy Quest just fine. One player is a Toshiba from about 1999 and the other is a Denon DVD-2200 that is about a year old. That many problem discs would definitely make me think that it's a glitchy player, not glitchy discs.
