There are references to Lucas and many others in almost every frame of the film. The ones I noticed right off the bat were the Strangers on a Train nod and the (various) King Kong references, right down to Kong climbing on the Empire State building.
The landing platform on the airship carrier is the same one from Cloud City as well. Godzilla's also in there. If you REALLY want to count it, in the gag reel Paltrow references MST3K: The Movie (who farted in our tube?)

I always knew she was a nerd

Yeah, I just noticed the outline of Godzilla on one of the newspaper shots. Very cool. I'm guessing that there are dozens of similar references that I haven't spotted yet.

Having a better understand of what the director was trying to achieve may help me to enjoy it more.
Cool. I hope you get into it more this time. I really enjoy the pure visual nature of the shots. There are so many references to classic SF films, noir films, comic books, The Thunderbirds, post cards, Max Fleischer cartoons etc. that it's just a joy from frame to frame. I have a background in the history of art so that may have something to do with my heightened sense of awareness of all the visual references throughout the film.

No hard feelings on the Swars/Scaptain comparison. I do like the Star Wars PT films so I see where you're coming from. To me though Lucas seems to have lost all ability to create solid composition within the frame which is a real shame. So be it though. They're both just movies, right?

Indeed...in the end I just ask myself, was I entertained? I wasn't with my first viewing of Sky Captain but I'll try it again. I try to be pretty open minded.

Anyone else think the DVD cover art is ugly? Man, I picked it up and almost puked because of that damn purple WIDESCREEN bar at the top. UGH! Glad the actual transfer is good. But would have been nice to at least have a cool slip cover, especially since that is the "IN" thing to do nowadays.

Paramount doesn't do slipcovers. That's more Sony Pictures' territory.

And I, personally, love the cover artwork on this DVD.

Damian,

When I first saw this in the theatre, I did not enjoy movie. While I did not hate the film, I did not take to the fact that it was totally retro, in that it was written and acted as if it were made in the 30's. I was expecting something in the Indy mode where it takes a modern approach to classic material. However, I gave it another chance knowing what to expect and I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I hope that you enjoy it more the second time around.

As for the disc, I really enjoyed the making of docs. I liked how the Conran brothers came across as fans being given an oppurtunity, and have so far avoided a Wachowski like pretentiousness about their work.

I'm looking forward to giving it another go this weekend. Having had my "eyes open" I think i'll be able to take it all in a bit better.

I said earlier that I hated that movie and I really shouldn't have. I didn't think it was complete dread like I did some other highly popular movie so I apoligize for using such a strong word to describe me feelings towards it.
Also I tend to not enjoy Gwenyth that much. I think she's a VERY over-rated actress but that's just me.
