A Look Inside... SKY CAPTAIN and the WORLD of TOMORROW

That's a long title. Well, it was announced on HD-DVD today, but lets take a look at the DVD headed to stores on the 25th.

Nice looking disc. The menu setups are pretty cool looking and so are those screen shots. Now my big question is to see if the DD EX will be flagged on my receiver once i buy the dvd. It was an EX and an ES track print and only labeled as a Dolby Digital 5.1

Anyways i can't wait to pick it up on the 25th

Just had a flashback shock!

I remeber thinking that this movie was SCREAMING out for the 2.35:1 treatment in the theater, and on seeing those screencaps again I had the same thought.

Shame, but visually scrumptious!

The color seems a bit off from what I remember theatrically, but nothing to keep me from buying the disc.

Thanks Moonraker!

I just got a notice from Digital Eyes that mine was shipped out today. A whole week early.

I have tried to curb my blind buying but I just couldn't resist this one.

I like the menus for the Special Features, integrated into that newspaper. Very nicely done. Looking forward to renting this when it comes out next week.

Same here about going Scope for the film. Its hard to tell which way they are going with Paramount and their trailers playing on screen. They now format the trailers to fill the entire screen for both Scope and Flat. I remember when i saw it in scope and being in aaahhhhh about it. (I have a few copies of the trailer in scope in my room ) But still it was an awesome looking movie and i can't wait for next week to buy it. The DVDFile.com review was very good too for the dvd

For those who haven't picked this up as yet:

Wal-Mart has a bonus disc of 'behind the scenes' features included in select copies (keep an eye out for a sticker on the shrinkwrap that mentions this). The bonus disc is included in both WS and P&S copies. The price at my location was $16.87 (of course, YMMV).

For those Canadians who haven't picked up a copy, Future Shop is including a T-Shirt along with the purchase of the movie. It is double shrink-wrapped to the case.

The shirt only comes in large though, and I'm XXL.

Same here. I gave mine to my sister or maybe it will eventually become my brothers. . .i don't know

At least it seemed to be selling nicely. Although i was very tempted to stop and older gentleman from buying the Full Screen version. Plus its my first movie case with the stupid security tabs on it.

I liked the style, I liked the CGI, I like the retro-feel.
I HATED the movie! What a complete bore. And you know why I was bored? Because all the actors seemed bored that's why. I don't think I can take another person complaining about how Star Wars is all CGI and bad acting because this movie was exactly that. And what makes it worse is it was filled with all A-List actors. Gwenyth has only looked more bored in Shallow Hal.
Blah...glad we rented it.

I refer you to Anakin's "I don't like sand" scene. NOTHING in Sky Captain sinks to that level of puke inducing "acting."

I think that Sky Captain is genius. Sure, the story could have been better but as an homage to all things 50s future it was a rousing success. See, the thing about it is that actors in front of blue screens are always going to have that, well, actors in front of blue screens look on their faces. Nothing is going to change that. What makes a full blown CG feature like this work is the integrity of the artistic vision. The visual imagery is handled in Sky Captain with a level of aplomb that contemporary Lucas couldn't begin to approach in his wildest wet dream. Sky Captain is filled with seamless imagery, amazingly robust design and stunningly beautiful compositions, all the things that the recent Star Wars films almost completely lack.

But hey, this thread isn't about the relative merits of the two films. I wouldn't have even said anything if you hadn't brought it up. But you know where I stand on this issue. Sky Captain is a work of art. The PT is a self indulgent wank-fest/money grab IMO.

Absolutely, Kerry is the Next Lucas, successfully paying homage to the old. People will look at SkyCaptain in 20 years like they do Tron today

You've some what proven my point. Everything you said that was good about the movie were basically the same things I said. (Only I didn't use as many words ) You never said you thought the acting was good.
But in the end, you can only polish a turd so much. Sure it was pretty, sure the CGI was nice and the composition was nice. But the acting was HORRID. I felt no emotion from any of the charctors, I didn't care if they lived or died, I didn't laugh at the jokes...nothing. At least in Star Wars I have an emotional attachment with the charactors. I root for the good guys and boo the bad guys. In sky captain when it ended I turned it off and didn't think anything else about it until I did the post above. I REALLY wanted to enjoy this movie because it's so beautifuly made. But the director obviously had to focus on getting the actors to react to stuff that's not there more then he had to try and get emotions from them.
I'm actually upset that I didn't like this movie.

Did anybody else catch the directors little "nod" to Lucas in the movie?
I should have taken a screen shot of it but I didn't. When the "Sky Captain" and Penny went to the lab and knocked on the door, the labs address was 1138.
I got a kick out of that.

Acting in the 50's was quite different than acting today.

It was a hell of a lot more than just pretty and nice. The composition of the frames was amazing. It draws from so many excellent sources and is calculated down to the last iota.

I disagree. This film wasn't shooting for realism or any particular emotional depth. Like the original Star Wars films the movie is an homage to the adventure serials so the acting is somewhat broad and wooden by design. I think that the actors did an excellent job within that context.

For me, that's true of the original Star Wars films but the PT just doesn't do it for me. The acting in the PT is so much worse than anything in Sky Captain that it's embarrassing. The story is slipshod, the emotional content nearly nil and, unlike Sky Captain, Lucas was going for a deeper emotional impact. He missed the mark horribly.

There are references to Lucas and many others in almost every frame of the film. The ones I noticed right off the bat were the Strangers on a Train nod and the (various) King Kong references, right down to Kong climbing on the Empire State building.

It's probably just a matter of taste at this point but I stick by my original assessment. Sky Captain is head and shoulders above the first two PT films.

I wanted to like this movie so much I'm going to give it another shot. Maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind last night. I had a rough day at work so I was pretty tired and grumpy.
Having a better understand of what the director was trying to achieve may help me to enjoy it more.
