DVD packaging

What's the deal with those sleeves that cover the plastic case with art exactly like the art on the actual case? Why do they do that? I hate that! Your thoughts:

It's as pointless and wasteful, if not more, as inserts. I toss them. They're a completely unnecessary hassle.

I don't mind the ones that are half-transparent, creating layered cover art. That's OK with me, even though it's still fairly useless, but at least it creates an interesting bit of art. The ones that merely replicate the actual cover, like for "Spider-Man 2", are just ridiculous.

They are used to help stop the theft of DVDs from stores. At least that's what I read somewhere once.
