Sideways

Alexander Payne has made some quirky stuff,
but i'm glad he's finally receiving good attention for it finally.

April 5th
$27.95. anamorphic widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 track
audio commentary with Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church, deleted scenes, and probably a few more things.....

but that's all thats known so far

Too bad Giamatti's not. They guy is fantastic. How the Academy didn't recognize his performance astounds me.

BTW Payne rocks. 3 for 3 so far.

payne is one awesome dude.

and yes, Paul Giamitti was robbed but I don't think he would have won anyways.

This film wasn't as good as I thought it would be though. Maybe a bit overrated. It was still well worth my time and money, but I think due to all the acclaim, I was a bit disappointed.

Spoiler (Highlight or Triple Click to Read):
Gotta love the ending. Both this and Schmidt had great endings/last shots.

I think he's 4 for 4 myself.... his lesser-known debut, a comedy about the abortion debate called "Citizen Ruth", is also brilliant as well!

And it's out on DVD. So if you haven't seen it, check it out!

I forgot about Citizen Ruth. Not a bad little film. Certainly not as good as Election, About Schmidt or Sideways though.

Sideways was my favorite of 2004.

First review for the dvd is in from IGN DVD.com Looks kind of disappointing for extras and video (but even in the theater the picture quality wasn't that great) But overall big thumbs up for the movie itself.

I agree with you there on everything, except (ducks), I'm in the miniority that doesn't think Giamatti was robbed. He was good, but it was a strong year, and I think the Oscars got the nom's right-- although I think they screwed up big time on who they let win.

Apparently every movie fan on the internet is better equipped to determine who "deserved" an Oscar than those who made the decision.

Everyone is going to have opinions about the Oscars.

Do we know if there will be another release of Sideways coming out shortly? I'd hate to buy this only to have a rerelease around the corner.

I didn't say that I was better equipped-- although I wouldn't say that the Oscar voters are better equipped. Neither is. Each person has his/her own individual opinion-- and opinion is never better than another opinion. The internet basically is opinion, hence the opinion all over the place... I didn't know that I had to say that every time I said what I thought about the Oscars.

This was probably my favourite movie of the year dialogue-wise. I was sitting there in the theatre thinking "How did this not win the Oscar for best movie?".

Question: How many times can one say "opinion" in a single sentence before he/she starts to sound ridiculous?

Answer: Twice.

I'll put the oscar argument to rest. Call me white, but Leonardo DiCaprio should have won the Academy Award instead of Jamie Foxx. I've found a lot of people i've talked to that saw both agree with me.

About the picture quality not being good I read somewhere that Payne intentionally wanted the picture to look a little awkward like a film from the 70's and wanted to look overly warm/hazy to give it a dreamlike feel, or state of inebriation maybe. i haven't listened to the commentary track yet but i read one review that said it was classic.

That was one great movie. Watched it last night for the first time and just laughed my ass off. Paul Giamatti was indeed ripped-off when he didn't when an Oscar. Just great performances from the entire cast and I absolutly loved the ending.
Reminded me of how a book would end. (surprise)

Actually i know quite i few people that dispised the movie. My friend and Patrick McKenna (Harold form the Red Green Show) both hated this film. Thought it was a huge let down and a pretty boring paced movie.

I stil intend to give it a viewing myself but not until its previewed. Haven't rente din years and don't plan on starting up again any time soon. My theater actually just got rid of the print of the movie last Fiday which really suprised me for how long we had it playing, and even funnier is that a 2nd hand theater took it for playing this week

Saw it last night. Very good, probably nothing I'd really want to watch again, lack of interest in the subject matter mostly. But I didn't get a chance to listen to the commentary track, might rent it again for that.

Just some of the lines THC has for getting laid is worth the price of the disk itself. A most excellent movie. Very well shot smart script and great cast. I'm glad it got some decent oscat attention. I bought it blind and very glad I did. Actually got it the same night I found Big Fish one sale so double bonus!

Sideways was an excellent film. Saw it in theaters and bought it. Havent got a chance to watch it yet though. I think it's more of a guy's film. My guy friend and his girlfriend went with me and my friend and I loved it but his g/f hated it. Also a bunch of girls said that they didnt like the humor. I enjoyed it.

By the way, Damian, Im a killer Kill Bill fan. Dont hate.

Nope, you are not alone. I didn't care for it, nor did a colleague I loaned my rented copy to.

I guess I just don't understand.

I thought Virginia Madsen was great as well as Sandro Ho.

Peace...

I thought About Schmidt was brilliant... I wrote a lot about it in the About Schmidt thread from forever ago, if you're interested. Highly underrated film, in my opinion. Possibly the best film of that year for me(I would have to see a list to know for sure). Election was just as brilliant, though I haven't seen it in a long time. When I finally get around to buying it and watching it again, I have a feeling I will love it even more.

I just got to see this this weekend. I thought it was just alright. Not worthy of a best pic nomination anyway. It had funny moments and was overall well acted. I feel it got all the attention because it was last year's indie darling that got the token nod.

Wasn't horrible by a long shot, just not great for me.

Girls hate it because of the way Giamatti's friend acts, that's my opinion anyway. But most guys get it because we all have that one F@*k up friend that acts like that.
