Dune

From DVD Answers:

Quote:
Universal Home Video has today announced a new extended edition of Dune which stars the likes of Kyle MacLachlan, Jose Ferrer, Max von Sydow and Linda Hunt. The disc will be available to own from the 10th May, and should set you back around $27.98 in total. I'm afraid we dont have any details on extra material at the moment, but we can confirm that the disc will carry both the 2 hour 17 minute theatrical cut, along with the unrated 3 hour 10 minute extended cut. We'll bring you further details on this one, very shortly.
Sweet!! I've always liked this movie, and having both versions on one release is going to be great.

For me the Sci-Fi adaptation made this version completely unnecessary.

I wonder if they got David Lynch to be involved with anything here.
I read a while ago about how he never wanted to go back to this movie.

It's about time.

Reaver, I too have found the Sci-Fi Channel version to be superior to Lynch's version, but there is something so alluring about watch the grandiose costumes and sets of Lynch's version. I already have the Sci-Fi Channel international extended cut, and I look forward to adding this one to my collection also.

I'm also wondering if there's going to be any extended cut of the Children of Dune series, which I enjoyed also.

Just to put a bit more info on this (from the Digital Bits):

Quote:
The Dune: Extended Edition will be released in a metal snap case (SRP $27.98). 2 versions of the film will be included... a 137-minute theatrical version, and the 177-minute extended edition. BOTH will be available in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen (which would mark the first time the extended edition was available in widescreen). The theatrical edition will feature both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio, while the extended edition will be Dolby Digital 5.1 only. Extras will include never before seen "behind-the-scenes" footage, documentaries on the special effects, visual design and costumes, deleted scenes, original photographs and artwork from the set (newly resurrected from personal collections) and more.

I can't wait to see the good cut wide, I really really need to find that 5-hour cut that's floating around, every extra scene makes it better

While the SF version is very good in many ways, the low budget, the bad actors, and the crackheaded costumes (the Revererend Mothra and her Cowgirls, the Pastry Chef Saudaukar) are major downside vs Lynch's excellent casting.

They say there is no 5 hour cut. They only filmed about 5 hours total footage and that includes multiple angles and takes.

Hmm. Can anyone confirm whether the extended cut is 190 or 177 minutes long? Both DVD Answers and DVD Times report 190 minutes.

It's a typo, it's approx 180min. It aired in 4 hours on broadcast TV with approx 15min of commericals per hour.

There is a 5 hour cut, but they say a lot of it is redundant, it's not the angles and takes. This sort of thing happens all the time with movies, they shoot far more than they intend to use. It's the workprint first assembly.

There isn't a five hour version but there IS a four hour version that's not the TV cut or, apparently, what's sitting on this disc, either. It was shown in a few places as a test version before being summarily yanked; both Lynch and DeLaurentiis hated it.

I like both this version and the SciFi one. The SciFi one is more true to the books and a much better adaptation. But the movie has some much better production value in some aspects and there's just certain parts of it that are great. And certain parts that are *LAME*. But you take the good with the bad.

I though even the theatrical cut was hated by Lynch? Wasn't the director's credit listed as Alan Smithee?

What a strange and brilliant little film. I clearly remember seeing this in the cinema back in '84. Couldn't make heads or tales of it. Pretty disturbing for a PG rated film.

This just in from the Digitalbits site:

This just in: We've gotten word that Universal has delayed their Dune: Extended Edition DVD until further notice. The title had been expected to street on 5/10. Unofficial word from our sources is that the delay will be several months at least, but there's no word as to why.

It seems to be a "Delay" and not a cancelation. (I hope)

Time will tell

Hopefully, it means they’ll have more time to do it right (and it will happen this year).

Otherwise, I do not understand their logic. They are re-releasing ridiculous movies and holding back on important ones (like Dune and Flash Gordon)

I get the feeling these companies put out fake release dates on certain titles, just to see how many pre-orders they get. Then they know if it's worth it or not. The "delay" is simply because they haven't even made the discs yet! If it never comes, we'll know they didn't get enough pre-orders...

Yeah, I'm a cynic.

I can only repeat Bill Hunt’s “Holy Moley”

From DigitalBits:
Quote:
Oh man... have we got some GREAT news for you Dune fans today! We've done some digging with our sources at Universal, and we've learned the real reason behind their delay of the Dune: Extended Edition (previously announced for 5/10, but then pulled "indefinitely" with no explanation given). Those of you who are familiar with the film know that there's a longer version that's been shown on TV, credited to director Alan Smithee (a pseudonym used by directors when they want to distance themselves from a project for whatever reason). Well get this... after years of saying he would never revisit Dune, at the 11th hour director David Lynch decided that he wanted to be involved in the new DVD after all. Which means that when it's eventually released, not only is the DVD going to include the original theatrical version of the film... it will include a brand new "director's extended cut" edited by Lynch himself! No kidding.
And to make my day even better:
Quote:
By the way, I was also able to confirm with Universal that a Flash Gordon: Special Edition is currently in production. No specs or release information is available yet, but it's good to know that the 80s sci-fi/camp classic is finally getting the long-awaited attention it deserves on DVD.

Perhaps, Lynch is hoping that if an extended Dune does well maybe New Line will finally cough up the cash for him to finish the cut scenes from Fire Walk With Me the way he wants too for a new edition of that film... *fingers crossed*

YESsss! Life as we know it is back on.

but does this mean that the 'Alan Smithee cut' will never be seen ? a third version of the bastard cut should be included on the disc.
more Dune = better Dune
well, maybe not, but I've wanted to see the Smithee cut for like 10 years.

David Lynch's Dune is still an amazing looking film (art/production design wise) to this day. I watched it not long ago on AMC (yes..even in that cut up and interrupted format) I simply had not seen it in ages...

I remember when it first came out...Christmas '84 I had the Marvel comic adaptation and even that was hard to follow.

This is definately one I'll pick up (especially if Lynch is involved)
