Charlie's Angels - The New DVD Format?

I have an Apex 600 DVD player that is permanently set to no region, and Charlie's Angels is the first DVD I have attempted to play on it that did not work. In fact, it brought up a Region map and said that "this disc will not play in all region players. Please get the appropriate Region 1 player to view it".

Now, luckily I have another player but will this be the new trend with DVDs?

Can you set the region to a specific one? The problem is that RCE discs want to know a particular region. They're not happy with just no region. That's why many newer region free players actually let you switch the region so that when a RCE disc asks, it can give it the correct one.

Wasn't there some talk not too long ago about a new encryption for DVD's that will not allow them to be played in region free players?

That's what RCE is (Region Code Enhancement). It's the best protection they can do at the moment... Some players can get round it, but the first to be hit are players set to Region 0.

In order to get past it your player MUST have the ability to choose a region. Even then there is no guarantee it will work 100%, although there are a lot of machines that remain unaffected.

The latest region mods are RCE proof, so might think about getting upgraded?

So... Looks like Charlies Angels IS RCE then! Hmmmm!

Makes sense. It's Sony. They were the first studio to use it with The Patriot. I'd look for it to be on all of their big titles. I'd expect Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon will have it, too.

RCE or not, I thought that the disc was pretty rockin'. I wasn't really paying attention to how much my sub was used, but I thought that the sound was quite good, and I felt the explosions enough to satisfy me. That and it's just such a fun movie. Though I do agree with the one review that I read which stated that a lot of the shots tended to end a little too quickly/abruptly. Other than that though, a fun ride and a terrific dvd! (I'm really glad they cut the deleted scenes though, they were pretty bad)

it carries RCE indeed but the big problem is the new dialnorm used by COLUMBIA: -7dB! hate it. deep bass lack the force I felt in the theaters. I again stress that point and Dvdfile should do a paper on it
