Sin City DVD Notes

God bless the man named Rodriguez. He must of had a great love for this film as he has already spilled some beans on what to expect on the dvd release of the movie. Seems like a 2-disc release already with what he has planned.

IGN DVD.com

Quote:
Sin City is based on three graphic novels by Frank Miller (who also co-directed the project). For the feature film, Rodriguez and Miller tied the three books together so that they could flow together as one movie. For the DVD, however, viewers will have the option of watching the whole film together or watching each book separately as they appeared in the novels, complete with new footage.

"We shot the full stories of the books," Rodriguez says. "And I knew we could truncate it down, we weren't going to lose any scenes. Eventually they would all be available for people to see. The DVD will come out with the theatrical cut, and then there will be a separate disc that's got the individual episodes separate with their own title card and you could just watch The Big Fat Kill from beginning to end in its full cut as a single story and then switch over and watch The Yellow Bastard, and that's 45 minutes. It will have all the material back in, so it will be like the experience of picking up the books where you pick up one story and you read it from beginning to end and it will have all the material in it. So you can kind of shuffle your own version of the movie and just watch them all separately."

The stories will feature additional scenes that will be familiar to fans of the graphic novels. "There were some things we had cut out from [Yellow Bastard] just to pace it for a feature because they weren't supposed to be three stories put together when he first wrote them, they were all separate books. So [there were] things to sort of pace it for a feature and keep it on a through line… Mickey Rourke doesn't go visit his mom now like he did in the book and get his gun, but we shot all that and it's all great stuff. It just wasn't necessary for the feature. You wanted to be more direct in that. It's not gonna feel like, when you watch that separate disc with this material back in like, 'Oh, I can see why that was cut.' They are really terrific scenes, action scenes, a lot of stuff that people will find. I think it's going to be somewhat revolutionary to see those scenes that were cut out [to] be put back in another format, because they seem perfectly fine and they work, they just needed to be taken out for the long haul of a feature."

Rodriguez says that planning for this feature ahead of time gave them an extra freedom during production. "It really gives it another life and another experience more akin to reading the books by doing that. That's what made it easier for us to say, 'Lets just shoot everything, prepare all the effects, and then if we edit stuff out, we're not really cutting it out and people are never going to see it. They'll be able to see it in a purer form in a different format."

The separate stories will be available together with the theatrical feature in one set. "Yes, in a package and then I'm gonna have another 10 minute, it'll be a 20 minute film school probably for this one because there's so many things. And I'll have another 10 minute cooking school. It will be Sin City breakfast tacos. (Laughs) We'll show you how to make a homemade flour tortilla and the best meal you can probably ever learn.

I shall name my first six male children born; Robert Rodriguez after the news of this disc. If there were more people like him that catered to the DVD nerd in us all it would be heaven. In a perfect world Robert would produce all DVD's!

See Hollywood!!! You don't own every director out there!! There are some that you haven't driven to hate cinema! Now if only we could get rid of some directors that aren't as forward thinking as RR we'd be all set.

This is really good news. I can't wait for this set. It really makes me wish that DVDs were released the at the same time as the theatrical release. I hope that one day that will be how it's done.

Although I admit to not going to the theatre that much anymore, mostly due to crowds, I think if we eliminate the cinema we lose a big part of the movie culture. So... no.

I can't wait to own this movie.

I've actually made the pork dish from his '10 Minute Cooking School' feature on the "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" disc several times. It's delicious.

Another "Ten Minute Cooking School" segment? What a gyp! On the Once Upon A Time In Mexico DVD, Rodriguez promised us a "Ten Minute Fucking School" featurette on his next disc! :p

Seriously, the Sin City DVD sounds tight. I'm just hoping for a Rodriguez/Miller/Tarantino commentary.

With RR and what he has planned there won't be a need for a Criterion.

Well that's nice. I thought the movie as it is was fine, but if each story had more to them then it's nice to see it back. I have to wonder though, if they keep making movies like this then why would they need comics?

Simple. Comics, as a static art form, are capable of different types of story telling and different forms of visual dynamism than film. There are things you can do in comics that you can't do in a movie and vice versa. Though Sin City is a very faithful adaptation of the comic, it's still just that: an adaptation. Film can never replace or supersede comic books. The two mediums inform one another and their relationship is increasingly close but as art forms they're so different that one can never become indistinguishable from the other. Also, comics are a kind of creativity that can be made by a single individual or a small group of people. They're highly personal in many cases and represent a singular artistic vision. Films require many hundreds of people to make and investments that dwarf the comparatively negligible money required to create and publish a comic book. Films are much less likely to present the deeply personal expressions of a single creator as they get watered down by the simple mechanics of film making itself. Comics are far more likely to be the place where highly original ideas make their first appearance and that's why Hollywood is so interested in mining comics for inspiration these days.

Everything Surf said, plus there ARE things movies could never convey. Sin City is actually one of the most "filmable" graphic novels I can think of. Try making a movie of something like The Sandman... it would be near impossible, I would imagine.

Well said, Monkey. I guess that pretty much answers my question. With something like Sin City that can take a comic and turn it into basically a moving comic with voice and music, it's easy to forget that it really is just an adaptation.

I wonder some times if an artist in one medium is (subconsiously or otherwise) thinking of another medium when creating their work. It's hard to imagine that Frank Miller wasn't thinking of film noir (the moving picture part, not just the genre) as he created Sin City, in the same way I swear Dan Brown must have been imaging The Da Vinci Code as a movie when he wrote that. Or when an author writes something with a piece of music either playing in the background or in their head. Meshing of art forms in their creative process, you know?

Anyway, this is too off topic. Sorry.

This is definately exciting. I have a feeling that I will probably watch the separate stories more often than the theatrical feature.

Now, if we could just get a special edition of Spy Kids with the extended cut from the theatre and some actual special features.

This just in from digitalbits.com

Here's a bit of cool DVD news that we figured some of you guys might be interested in: Buena Vista has let it slip that Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's neo-noir Sin City will hit our favorite format on 8/16. It looks like this is going to be a fairly bare-bones version, with a more elaborate special edition DVD set to follow later in 2005 or 2006.

I guess I will be waiting til the end of the year or early next year to get this one.

That's not surprising. With the rumored "full story" version coming around I'm not surprised the first edition will be just the theatrical cut. For those that missed it in the theater, you know.

This is a movie worth double dipping on for me, so I'll go ahead and get the first edition. I debated the Kill Bill films but finally went ahead and got them, a decision I'm happy I made considering how long it's been and there's still no firm announcement for an SE, and the new SE may not have the films as originally presented either.
