Is it a good call for a blind buy?

I haven't seen it, but at least it's got some nice T&A in it. That's got to count for something.

Yes. With Mike Nichols helming this incredibly cast drama, it's a recommended buy.

I would say no. I enjoyed it mostly for the acting of Clive Owens and Jude Law, but as has been said before, Natalie Portman certainly detracted from the movie and certainly from every scene she was in. But I also found the story to be not all that interesting, especially not worthy of my owning it. I would say rent it first because there it is not a surefire hit and there is a chance you might not like it.

I highly recommend this as a blind buy to you. I rented the film Tuesday and loved it so much i bought it the next day. The performances are wonderful and the story is very realistic.

I highly recommend the movie as one of the best (mainstream) movies of 2005........... as blind buy?.... not so sure....... it depends on why you buy movies. I buy the ones I can watch again and again and I am not sure I can do that with Closer..... my .25 kroner

It was a blind-buy for me, based on the trailer, cast involved, director, and plot. I don't really think anyone else can tell you will like it, only why THEY liked it, and you make your own assumptions. Check the other thread for my longer view on Closer, but in brief: any fan of drama movies who has ever been in love and lost it, who holds that as a powerful moment in their life, needs to see this film.

Along with Sideways this was definitely one of last years best movies. It may not be everybodys cup of tea but as Moog said if you've loved and lost and/or cheated on someone then it should definitely strike a few chords. All the cast (yes, even Nat) are excellent, the script is real and the direction is top notch.

If you're buying it just to see Nat's blouse potatoes then you're going to be disappointed (they ain't in it).

Was I the only guy who applauded when Clive Owen delivered this line?

A reason I reckon a lot of people may not like Portman's acting in this film is out of fear of her character. She is such a strong woman in this film and for me personally mop's the floor with Ms Roberts easily! Her character reminds of Brenda from Six Feet Under, another strong female lead who shit's on men where ever she goes. But at least they are honest about it, may not be pleasant though. Instead of Julia Roberts deceptive try and keep it quiet type character. I would rather be open like them and have it out there instead of sugar coating it But that's just me.....

That's a big point of the movie... Portman's character is by far the youngest, but in the end she shows herself to be the most mature.

And what sidcupmartin said was true, if you've ever ben cheated on or have cheated on someone, this movie will pound you in the fucking stomach. I've experienced both, so I can testify. If you read some reviews for this on the IMDB or Amazon there's tons of people talking about how unrealistic the movie is... let me state here and now this movie is COMPLETELY realistic and feels so very real.

I'm thinking of buying the film mostly due to Jude Law and the plot to be honest

It's a down and dirty film about flawed people (as are we all) doing some flawed things. It hurts you and breaks you if you've ever experienced this shit, it shocks you and surprises you if you haven't. It's not a love story, it's almost an anti0love story, though it leaves some hope. Jude Law does a good job in the movie, though Owen kicks his ass in the acting department.

As long as you know this is NO romantic comedy, you should be ok. I just read a lot of reviews for it recently and it seems everyone who loved it were people who went through similar things in their own lives, so keep that in mind.

You saying it in another thread (at least i think it was you, if not i am sorry) does hardly count as being said before. You should have written, like i have said before. But i have not seen the movie, so it is a blind buy for my part. Will hopefully get it in the mail on monday.

I just found this thread. I wouldn't consider this a blind buy candidate but a buy after renting and watching candidate.

Peace...

I really enjoyed it, some great dialog and acting from all involved, even portman imo.

Beware, if you are getting it for the T&A (and you know there are those of you out there), there really isn't much in the movie.

There's a great scene between Clive Owen and Jude Law.
Julia Roberts says some pretty dirty things which means if you're a guy (and I know you're not) and you like Julia Roberts then it's sort of a turn on.
Natalie Portman "almost" gets naked.

In the end I was very happy I only rented it because I thought all the charactors were dispicable excuses for humans and all deserved what happened to them.
And I didn't waste twenty bucks on that piece of shit movie.

You think it's a terrible movie because the characters are unlikable?

part of the reason. If I don't give a crap about the charactors why should I devote time to watching the movie? There wasn't a single likeable charactor in it. No one to root for so to speak. If they all had climbed into a car at the end and drove it in front of a speeding train I wouldn't have cared.

I respect your opinion but it's not a terrible movie. The subject matter may disgust you and lead you to dislike the movie but that does not make it a terrible movie. The acting is top notch, good direction, good script etc. The whole point of the movie is to show how horrendous people can be toward each other.

I thought it was an excellent movie but not something I would ever really want to watch again. It's a hard movie to endure.

I love this movie, although I hate to disappoint you, but there is no T&A in it. It is very sexually explicit but there is no nudity. It's incredibly well written and very well acted. I thought Clive Owen should've won the oscar

I can see how this can't be to everyones taste but I loved it. Next to Sideways it was one of my favourites from last year.

As I said above, anyone who's had several relationships has been through something like what this movie depicts, so if they're awful human beings, I guess I am too.

One of the most realistic and heartbreaking movies ever made, my favorite of last year without question.

I'd agree as well. It was a good movie and I enjoyed it, but it's been sitting in my "maybe buy list" for a while because there's not much on the DVD.

I agree and I certainly could watch it again.

Clive Owen nailed his role.
